BloFin
Wealthsimple Crypto
Description
BloFin is a crypto-funded derivatives and spot exchange built for active traders, with perpetual swaps, copy trading and a small spot market. It is not registered in Canada and its Terms of Use name Canada as a Restricted Location, so it is not available to Canadians.
Wealthsimple is a Canadian trading platform that lets you buy crypto in CAD alongside your stocks, cash and other accounts in one app. Crypto is offered by Wealthsimple Investments Inc., a CIRO dealer member, and sits in a non-registered account only, so it cannot be held in a TFSA or RRSP.
Coins
235 spot assets across 242 live spot pairs and 495 perpetual-swap base assets (public API, 2026-10-01).

Fees
Spot 0.1% maker and 0.1% taker at the base tier. Futures 0.02% maker and 0.06% taker at the Regular tier. No platform withdrawal fee, only the network fee. No CAD funding.
A flat 0.5% trading fee on every order plus a spread on market orders (the fee schedule's own example is 0.50% + 1.00% spread = 1.50%) | Active Trader status (50 eligible trades in a month) swaps the spread for 0%, with the fee 0.5% falling to 0% above CAD 15M of 30-day volume | CAD 1 surcharge on any order under CAD 100 | Buying USDC with CAD or CADD with CAD carries no fee or spread | Crypto swaps pay one fee | Staking fee 30% of rewards (15% Generation) | USD trades add a 1.5% FX fee unless you hold a USD account

Staking fee takes 30% of rewards for Core and Premium
No USDT, no advanced trading tools, margin or futures
A 5 business day hold on new deposits before you can withdraw crypto

BloFin is crypto-funded. Fiat goes through third-party providers, and Canada is a Restricted Location, so no Canadian funding route exists under the Terms of Use. Crypto trades in CAD or USD; USD trades pay a 1.5% FX fee plus a corporate exchange fee unless you have a USD account. The 5 business day deposit hold before crypto withdrawal is the main timing trap.

BloFin: Base-tier spot maker/taker 0.1% each per BloFin help centre (Oct 29 2024) and fee page, checked 2026-10-01. Not usable from Canada. Wealthsimple Crypto: Flat 0.5% fee per order. The high end adds the 1.00% spread used in Wealthsimple's own CAD 5,000 example (spread varies with market conditions) from the fee schedule dated 2026-09-24. Active Trader status (50 eligible trades in a calendar month) removes the spread. A CAD 1 surcharge applies to orders under CAD 100 (not counted here). Ranges reflect each platform’s published band, not a single quote. Bank and network fees are not included.
What Do BloFin And Wealthsimple Crypto Offer Beyond Buying And Selling?
BloFin Only
Perpetual swaps: 495 base assets (519 swap instruments) with maximum leverage up to 150x per the public API. Futures base fees are 0.02% maker and 0.06% taker. Not available to Canadians.
Copy trading: Listed as a service in the Terms of Use alongside futures and spot trading.
Wealthsimple Crypto Only
Staking: ETH, SOL, ADA and DOT, advertised as up to 5% a year. Wealthsimple keeps 30% of rewards (15% for Generation) and validators take their own commission (ETH about 5%).
Crypto swaps: Swap one eligible coin for another in one trade with one fee instead of two.
Recurring buys and price-target orders: Schedule automatic purchases or set a price at which an order executes. Recurring orders do not count toward Active Trader status.
DEX trading: On-chain token access with CAD 0 network fees, per Wealthsimple, through the Crypto Web3 Wallet.
Active Trader status: Earned with 50 or more eligible trades in a calendar month, valid for that month and the next. Cuts the crypto fee to 0.5% to 0% with a 0% spread, plus priority phone and email support.
What Happens To Your Money If BloFin Or Wealthsimple Crypto Fails?
BloFin: BloFin is not registered with the CSA, is not a CIRO member and has no FINTRAC MSB registration, so no Canadian regulator oversees it. CIPF never covers crypto and BloFin is not a member anyway. Because Canada is a Restricted Location, an account opened from Canada through a VPN or false address can be frozen, with funds inside. We could not verify insurance, proof of reserves or cold storage shares. If the exchange fails or is hacked, a Canadian has no regulator to complain to.
Wealthsimple Crypto: Wealthsimple Investments Inc. is a CIRO dealer member, so cash in the account is covered by CIPF, but crypto is explicitly not covered by CIPF, CDIC or any investor protection scheme. Wealthsimple says crypto is held in trust and would remain yours in an insolvency, and that custodial partners each carry over CAD 75M of insurance, but that cover is held by the partners and the custodians are not named on the product page. No proof of reserves is published. Hot wallet losses are the part covered by the Coincover recovery arrangement.
How Are BloFin And Wealthsimple Crypto Treated For Tax In Canada?
BloFin: Spot sales, crypto-to-crypto trades and futures settlement are dispositions for CRA purposes. No tax export or CRA-ready report was verified, so Canadians would have to rebuild records from trade history.
Wealthsimple Crypto: Selling, swapping one coin for another and staking rewards are taxable; withdrawing crypto to your own wallet is not a disposition. Wealthsimple provides a Realized Gains and Losses report as PDF or CSV and a Crypto Transaction Summary CSV, and says there is no official tax slip for crypto.
Selling, swapping or spending crypto is a disposition for the CRA on any platform. This is not tax advice: see my guide to crypto taxes in Canada.
Which Should You Choose, BloFin Or Wealthsimple Crypto?
Choose BloFin If
You want a regulated route: pick a CSA-registered platform instead, BloFin does not serve Canadians.
You wanted perpetual swaps: BloFin is not an option from Canada, so check a registered dealer's derivatives offer.
Choose Wealthsimple Crypto If
You already hold stocks or cash at Wealthsimple and want crypto in the same app.
You value a CIRO-regulated dealer and a simple flat fee over the lowest possible cost.
You trade 50 or more times a month and can qualify for Active Trader pricing.
Is BloFin Or Wealthsimple Crypto Better For Canadians In 2026?
Wealthsimple Crypto, because it is the only one of the two a Canadian can use under the platform's own rules. BloFin holds #2 on my ranked list at 9.6 and Wealthsimple is #4 at 8.4. Those scores are not a green light. BloFin's Terms of Use list Canada as a Restricted Location, it is not on the CSA list, it has no CIRO membership, and I found no FINTRAC MSB match.
Wealthsimple Investments Inc. is a CIRO investment dealer member and sits under a CSA crypto decision amended December 22, 2025. Cash in the account falls under CIPF. Crypto never does, and Wealthsimple says so. Power Corporation owns 52.4% of the parent company, and the app serves Canadian residents only.
Which Costs Less When You Actually Trade?
BloFin's spot fee is 0.1% maker and taker at the base tier, so CAD 5,000 costs CAD 5. Wealthsimple's schedule, dated September 24, 2026, charges a flat 0.5% plus a spread on market orders. Its own example is a CAD 5,000 buy at 1.50% all in, which is CAD 75: CAD 25 in fees and a 1.00% spread, and the spread moves with the market. Orders under CAD 100 pay a CAD 1 surcharge.
The 0.1% is attractive and unreachable. BloFin has no CAD funding. Fiat goes through third-party providers that are unavailable to Canadians, so you would arrive with crypto bought somewhere else and pay that venue's costs first. Wealthsimple lets you deposit by free Interac e-Transfer, with instant access up to CAD 50,000 on Core. A newly deposited amount is held five business days before you can withdraw crypto bought with it.
Which Is Safer For Canadians?
Wealthsimple holds crypto in trust. It says most sits in cold storage with regulated custodial partners that each carry over CAD 75M of insurance, and the remainder in hot wallets with Coincover recovery cover. The custodians are not named on the product page, and no proof of reserves is published. Treat the insurance as the partners' arrangement, not yours.
BloFin is custodial and I could not verify insurance, proof of reserves or cold storage share. If it fails or freezes an account, a Canadian has no regulator to complain to. Because the terms restrict Canada, an account opened from here is the kind that gets frozen. I would not recommend trying to get around that.
Do Futures And Active Trader Pricing Change The Math?
They define who each platform is for. BloFin lists 495 perpetual-swap base assets, with leverage up to 150x per its public API, plus copy trading. Futures fees are 0.02% maker and 0.06% taker. None of that is available to Canadians under its terms.
Wealthsimple has no derivatives, but a frequent trader can reduce costs. Reach 50 eligible trades in a calendar month and Active Trader status cuts the fee from 0.5% toward 0% with a 0% spread for that month and the next. Recurring orders do not count. If you do not trade that often, the spread is the cost to watch, and the old advice applies: use a live quote, not the headline.
If you want perpetuals from Canada, neither of these is the answer. Look at what a registered dealer offers instead.
Who Should Choose BloFin And Who Should Choose Wealthsimple Crypto?
For a Canadian the answer comes down to what is permitted, not what is cheapest.
Choose Wealthsimple Crypto if you already invest there. You hold cash or stocks at Wealthsimple, want crypto in the same app, and prefer a CIRO dealer and a simple flat fee over the lowest possible cost.
BloFin is not an option I can send Canadians to. Its terms restrict Canada and it has no CAD funding. If you want derivatives, check what a registered Canadian dealer offers first.
What Has Happened With BloFin And Wealthsimple Crypto?
Wealthsimple updated its crypto fee schedule: 0.5% flat plus spread, Active Trader tiers down to 0%, and a CAD 1 small-order surcharge.
The CSA amended its decision for Wealthsimple Investments Inc.
BloFin listed 11 new USDC spot pairs, a market it opened in January 2024.
