BloFin is my number 2 and Coinbase my number 1, which looks like a close race. It is not. BloFin lists Canada as a Restricted Location in its Terms of Use, while Coinbase is a CSA Restricted Dealer in every province and territory.

BloFin Vs Coinbase: Which Is Better For Canadians?

For most Canadians, Coinbase is the better choice (it wins on canadian status, my ranking, CAD funding). BloFin still comes out ahead on published trading fee. BloFin is best for experienced traders after low fees on altcoins and futures.

BloFin is crypto-funded. Fiat goes through third-party providers, and Canada is a Restricted Location, so no Canadian funding route exists under the Terms of Use. Coinbase publishes no minimums, maximums or cash-out fees for Canada, so the bank-side limit is the practical cap. Payment method name must match the Coinbase account name or the deposit goes to manual review for one to three business days.

BloFin: Base-tier spot maker/taker 0.1% each per BloFin help centre (Oct 29 2024) and fee page, checked 2026-10-01. Not usable from Canada. Coinbase: High end is the Coinbase fee of up to 1.875% on simple buys and sells (varies by payment method), checked 2026-10-03, with a spread on top that is shown only in the order preview and a separate 1% on simple limit orders. Low end is the 0% maker rate Coinbase advertises for Advanced, but the Canadian rate table is not public. Ranges reflect each platform’s published band, not a single quote. Bank and network fees are not included.

What Do BloFin And Coinbase Offer Beyond Buying And Selling?

BloFin Only

  • Perpetual swaps: 495 base assets (519 swap instruments) with maximum leverage up to 150x per the public API. Futures base fees are 0.02% maker and 0.06% taker. Not available to Canadians.
  • Copy trading: Listed as a service in the Terms of Use alongside futures and spot trading.

Coinbase Only

  • Coinbase Advanced: Order book trading with no spread, limit orders and charting. The Canadian maker/taker table is shown only after signing in, so the rate is not published here.
  • Staking: Standard commission 35% of rewards for ADA, ATOM, AVAX, DOT, ETH, MATIC, SOL and XTZ, lower for Coinbase One tiers (31.75%, 28.5%, 25.25%). Canadians must pass a staking appropriateness questionnaire, repeated every 12 months.
  • Coinbase One: Subscription that waives the Coinbase fee on simple buys and sells, with a spread still included. It excludes Advanced and the 1% limit order fee. Subscription price not retrieved.
  • USDC rewards: Rewards on USDC balances, not guaranteed and not covered by CIPF or CDIC. The advertised rate (up to 3.75% APY) was seen on the navigation menu only.
  • Derivatives for eligible investors: Futures through Coinbase Financial Markets launched 2026-09-02 for eligible Canadian investors only, not retail.

What Happens To Your Money If BloFin Or Coinbase Fails?

BloFin: BloFin is not registered with the CSA, is not a CIRO member and has no FINTRAC MSB registration, so no Canadian regulator oversees it. CIPF never covers crypto and BloFin is not a member anyway. Because Canada is a Restricted Location, an account opened from Canada through a VPN or false address can be frozen, with funds inside. We could not verify insurance, proof of reserves or cold storage shares. If the exchange fails or is hacked, a Canadian has no regulator to complain to.

Coinbase: The CSA Restricted Dealer decision gives regulator oversight, a suitability questionnaire, loss notifications and purchase caps, but it is not deposit insurance. Coinbase says fiat and crypto are not protected by CIPF or CDIC. Customer assets sit in omnibus accounts at Coinbase, Inc. and Coinbase Custody Trust Company, and the Canadian pages publish no insurance figure or proof of reserves, so the 1:1 holding promise rests on Coinbase's own statement and public-company audits. Account holds on mismatched names or EFT deposits can lock funds for days.

How Are BloFin And Coinbase Treated For Tax In Canada?

BloFin: Spot sales, crypto-to-crypto trades and futures settlement are dispositions for CRA purposes. No tax export or CRA-ready report was verified, so Canadians would have to rebuild records from trade history.

Coinbase: Buying crypto with CAD is not a disposition, but selling, converting one coin to another, spending, and staking rewards are taxable events. Coinbase Taxes gives a gain/loss report and a transaction history as CSV; you still file the Schedule 3 yourself.

Selling, swapping or spending crypto is a disposition for the CRA on any platform. This is not tax advice: see my guide to crypto taxes in Canada.

Which Should You Choose, BloFin Or Coinbase?

Choose BloFin If

  • You want a regulated route: pick a CSA-registered platform instead, BloFin does not serve Canadians.
  • You wanted perpetual swaps: BloFin is not an option from Canada, so check a registered dealer's derivatives offer.

Choose Coinbase If

  • You want a large public company with a simple app and a CSA-registered Canadian entity.
  • You are comfortable using Advanced rather than the simple buy screen, which costs far more.
  • You want free Interac e-Transfer or EFT funding and a wide altcoin list.

Is BloFin Or Coinbase Better For Canadians In 2026?

Coinbase, and it is not close once you read the terms. BloFin's Terms of Use list Canada as a Restricted Location, it is not on the CSA list, it is not a CIRO member and I found no FINTRAC registration. Coinbase Canada, Inc. holds a CSA decision (April 3, 2024, amended April 1, 2026) and a FINTRAC MSB registration valid to March 2027.

BloFin has real strengths, which is why it keeps its rank: 235 spot assets, 495 perpetual swap base assets and a well-rated app. None of that helps if you cannot open an account in good standing. My full BloFin review and Coinbase review go through the details.

Which Costs Less When You Actually Trade?

On paper BloFin wins. Spot is 0.1% maker and taker, so a CAD 1,000 trade costs CAD 1.00 per side. Coinbase's simple buy is up to 1.875% plus a spread, which is up to CAD 18.75 on the same CAD 1,000 before the spread, and a separate 1% sits on simple limit orders.

The comparison that matters is Advanced, where Coinbase charges no spread, but I cannot quote its Canadian maker and taker rate because it is shown only after sign-in. And BloFin has no CAD route at all: you would arrive with crypto bought elsewhere, which means paying a registered platform first. The low fee is not the whole cost.

What About Futures, Leverage And Copy Trading?

This is the real reason people search for BloFin. Its public API shows leverage up to 150x on perpetual swaps, with futures fees of 0.02% maker and 0.06% taker. That is a high-risk product, and a small price move can wipe out a position.

Coinbase's answer is narrower. Regulated futures launched on September 2, 2026 but only for eligible Canadian investors, so most retail readers will not see them. If you want leverage as a retail Canadian, that gap is a signal from the regulators, not a gap for an offshore exchange to fill.

Which Is Safer For Canadians?

Coinbase gives you a regulator, a suitability questionnaire, loss notifications and purchase caps. It is not insurance: Coinbase says CIPF and CDIC do not cover crypto or Canadian fiat wallets, and it publishes no insurance figure or proof of reserves on the Canadian pages.

BloFin gives you none of that oversight. If it is hacked or fails, a Canadian has no regulator to call and no CIPF. Coinbase's weak spot is practical: holds on mismatched names or EFT deposits can lock funds for days.

Who Should Choose BloFin And Who Should Choose Coinbase?

I would not tell a Canadian to choose BloFin. If you want futures, check what a registered dealer offers and accept that retail access is limited. Choose Coinbase if you want a regulated app, free Interac or EFT funding and 200+ coins. You can start at the Coinbase sign-up page. For other registered options see the best crypto exchanges in Canada.

How Do Coinbase's Limits Compare With BloFin's Open Door?

Coinbase applies the rules a CSA restricted dealer must apply. Non-major coins carry a CAD 30,000 cap in NB, NL, NS, ON, PEI, NT, NU and YT, USDT, DAI and RAI are not available to Canadians, and staking needs an appropriateness questionnaire that repeats every 12 months. Staking also carries a 35% commission on rewards.

BloFin has no such limits for a simple reason: it does not treat Canada as a market. The absence of friction is not a feature. It is the same fact as the Restricted Location line in the Terms.

What Should A Careful Canadian Do Instead Of Opening BloFin?

Use Coinbase Advanced if you want cheaper trading than the simple buy screen, and read the order preview before you confirm anything. Opening a BloFin account with a false address or by hiding where you are breaches its Terms of Use and risks the funds inside. The cost of that mistake is higher than any fee saving.

If perpetual swaps are the draw, ask whether you want the product or the leverage. A regulated route may not offer the leverage, and in my view that is part of why it exists.
