Bitbuy vs. Shakepay with Canadian flag background

Bitbuy and Shakepay offer Canadians a simple and fast way to purchase cryptocurrency. If you’re looking for a cryptocurrency exchange for Canadians that offers a quick way to buy crypto with Canadian dollars, Bitbuy and Shakepay are two of the best options. Both are among Canada’s most regulated platforms, Bitbuy under CIRO oversight via the Robinhood/WonderFi group, and Shakepay as a full CIRO-registered investment dealer since January 2025.

Bitbuy Vs Shakepay: Which Is Better For Canadians?

Shakepay wins by default for Canadians. Bitbuy accounts were moved to Coinsquare Capital Markets Ltd. in May 2024, and since Robinhood closed its WonderFi purchase on June 1, 2026 the Bitbuy site tells users it is now part of Robinhood and customers are being invited to move to the Robinhood app. Since Bitbuy no longer operates for Canadians, I recommend Coinbase (9.8/10, #1 on my list): open a Coinbase account.

AmountShakepay BuyShakepay Round Trip
CAD 100$0.50 to $2.00$1.00 to $4.00
CAD 500$2.50 to $10.00$5.00 to $20.00

Shakepay: Published target band of 0.5% to 2.0% over the benchmark price, which may widen by up to 1.5% in adverse conditions (help article checked 2026-10-03). Neither publishes a maker and taker schedule because there is no order book: the spread is the fee. If cost matters most, NDAX (flat 0.20%) or Kraken Pro are cheaper places to buy in Canada. Ranges reflect each platform’s published band, not a single quote. Bank and network fees are not included.

What Do Bitbuy And Shakepay Offer Beyond Buying And Selling?

Bitbuy Only

  • Staking: Staking on nine coins including ETH, SOL, ADA and DOT, with a combined 39% cut of rewards (30% Bitbuy plus 9% custodian).
  • OTC desk and Private Wealth: Offered for large trades.

  • BLOC (bitcoin-backed line of credit): Borrow up to $50,000 against bitcoin through Shakepay Credit Inc. APR 11.5% Base, 10.5% Bright, 9.5% Blue. No fixed payments while LTV is 50% or lower. • Interest and USD: CAD interest 1.5% Base, 2% Bright, 3% Blue; savings 1.5%, 2% and 5% (Blue, first $100,000). The crypto page advertises 3.5% on USD. Rates are variable and not guaranteed.

What Happens To Your Money If Bitbuy Or Shakepay Fails?

Bitbuy: Existing Bitbuy users should watch for Robinhood migration emails and read the new terms and fees before accepting. Accounts are held by Coinsquare Capital Markets Ltd., a CIRO-regulated dealer, and the registry says the CSA entry for Bitbuy Technologies Inc. is expired. If you do not want to move, withdraw your crypto to a wallet you control. CIPF covers cash but never crypto.

Shakepay: CIPF covers the cash and USD you hold at Shakepay, advertised as up to $1 million, but crypto is explicitly not covered. Customer crypto is held in trust with Coinbase Custody (at least 80% cold) and Fireblocks and BitGo hot wallets, and Shakepay's own risk statement warns that insurance may be inadequate and points users to withdraw to a private wallet. A hack, a custodian failure or a freeze can still hit crypto balances. BLOC adds liquidation risk if bitcoin falls, and Shakepay Credit operates under time-limited exemptive relief that runs three years from April 9, 2026, not full registration.

How Are Bitbuy And Shakepay Treated For Tax In Canada?

Bitbuy: Selling or swapping crypto on Bitbuy was a disposition for CRA purposes. Export your full transaction history before your account is migrated or closed. Export formats: Not published.

Shakepay: Selling crypto, swapping it (including auto-swap), spending it with the card or repaying with it are dispositions; card cashback in bitcoin is income when received and your cost base starts at that value. Shakepay emails two CSVs (crypto and cash) but issues no tax slips, so you need Koinly or similar.

Selling, swapping or spending crypto is a disposition for the CRA on any platform. This is not tax advice: see my guide to crypto taxes in Canada.

Which Should You Choose, Bitbuy Or Shakepay?

Choose Bitbuy If

  • You want a registered platform that serves Canadians today: Coinbase is our number one replacement, with free Interac e-Transfer funding and a Canadian restricted dealer registration.
  • You hold a Bitbuy account and want to compare it with what Robinhood is offering before you accept the migration.

Choose Shakepay If

  • You want the simplest Interac-funded way to buy Bitcoin or Ethereum from a CIRO-registered firm.
  • You want a bitcoin cashback card or a bitcoin-backed credit line in the same app.
  • You will keep the account active each month to reach Bright or Blue and lower the card and loan costs.
  • You do not need many coins, limit orders or Lightning.

What Happened To Bitbuy?

Bitbuy is no longer a separate platform. Its accounts moved to Coinsquare Capital Markets Ltd. in May 2024, and since Robinhood closed its WonderFi purchase on June 1, 2026, the Bitbuy site tells users it is now part of Robinhood and invites customers to move to the Robinhood app.

Coinsquare Capital Markets Ltd. is the entity that operates the platform, and it appears on the CSA list with a decision dated October 11, 2024. Bitbuy Technologies Inc. sits under expired decisions on the CSA site, and its FINTRAC MSB registration shows as ceased on February 20, 2025. Bitbuy's help centre says the 2024 move was required because its CSA relief was time-limited and called for a move under CIRO oversight.

If you still hold coins there, watch for the migration invitation, open it only from the official Bitbuy or Robinhood channels, and read the new terms before you accept. I do not send new readers to Bitbuy, because the business is being folded into Robinhood. On the Robinhood side, a flat 0.5% on CAD trades was advertised for the first few months after launch, and the zero-fee promotion for Canada ended on September 30, 2026. Its fee schedule sets the fee at 0.5% through October 31, 2026 and 0.95% from November 1, 2026.
