BitMart Review For Canadians 2026: Is It Safe?

Last updated October 2, 2026

Fact-checked by Canadian crypto tradersHow we testWe may earn a commission

BitMart has stopped new sign-ups and is shutting down. My #1 pick: CoinbaseOpen Coinbase

Status Notice: BitMart is shutting down. Its own notice says it began to stop accepting new registrations on July 26, 2026, has stopped new deposits, and will cease operations on January 31, 2027 (BitMart announcement). If you hold funds there, withdraw them now. My top pick instead is Coinbase. Offshore BitMart is not registered in Canada. I found no BitMart entry in FINTRAC's money services business registry (searched October 2, 2026) and I could not verify a CSA listing. No Canadian regulator oversees your funds, and no Canadian investor protection applies. If you want a registered platform, my top pick is Coinbase (Visit Coinbase), followed by Kraken.

BitMart is an offshore exchange with a very long altcoin list, spot and futures trading, margin up to 5x, copy trading, bots and a prepaid card. It has no Canadian registration that I could find, no CAD funding or Interac that I could verify, and a history that includes a large hot wallet hack in December 2021. I would use it only for altcoins you cannot get on a registered platform, with money you can afford to lose access to.

  • Best for: experienced traders hunting small-cap altcoins who accept offshore risk
  • Skip it if: you want Canadian investor protection, CAD funding or a first purchase. Use Coinbase or Kraken
  • Safer habit: move profits to a personal wallet after trading

Is BitMart Safe For Canadians In 2026?

BitMart Review for Canadians: screenshot of the BitMart Help Center showing how to deposit.

BitMart is a real, operating exchange with years of continuous trading history. Its safety record has two chapters: before and after December 4, 2021, when attackers drained its hot wallets using compromised private keys. BitMart reimbursed the affected users and moved to stronger cold storage. It remains unregulated in Canada: I found no entry for it in FINTRAC's registry and could not verify a CSA listing. That puts it in the same risk bracket as BloFin and MEXC, which are offshore platforms whose terms restrict Canadians. I did not verify BitMart's terms on Canada, so read them yourself before you register.

I have tested offshore exchanges since 2016, and the single most important question I ask is: what happened when something went wrong? For BitMart, the 2021 hack is the data point. Attackers used stolen private keys to drain Ethereum-based and BSC-based hot wallets worth roughly $200 million. BitMart's CEO, Sheldon Xia, acknowledged the breach publicly, suspended withdrawals for a short time and committed to reimbursing users from the company's own funds. Withdrawals resumed within days and users were made whole. That response matters. Exchanges that deny, delay and disappear when something goes wrong are the ones to avoid. BitMart's response was transparent and financially responsible, even if the breach itself was a serious failure of key management.

What concerns me more today is transparency. Platforms like Kraken publish reserve attestations so customers can check that their balances are backed. I could not find a Proof of Reserves page on BitMart's current site. Its homepage describes a hybrid hot and cold wallet system, multi-signature technology and an advanced risk control system, which is useful but is not something you can verify independently. After FTX, that is the most meaningful gap at any exchange, and it is the reason I do not suggest leaving large balances here.

What Are The Security Settings To Turn On?

Whatever BitMart offers in your account settings, use all of it. Turn on two-factor authentication with an authenticator app instead of SMS, set an anti-phishing code if the option exists so that genuine emails carry your phrase, and use withdrawal address whitelisting so a thief cannot send your coins to a new address. Use a password you have never used anywhere else. Complete identity verification before you deposit a meaningful amount, because the same verification is often required later to withdraw.

What About The Reported July 2025 Data Incident?

In July 2025, researchers reported finding an alleged BitMart user database offered for sale on criminal forums. I could not find an official confirmation or denial, so treat it as unverified. The practical lesson holds either way: if you have submitted ID to any offshore exchange, expect phishing emails and texts that use its name, never click links in messages, and make sure your BitMart password is unique.

What Is BitMart's Track Record?

BitMart was founded in 2017 by Sheldon Xia and headquartered in the Cayman Islands, and became publicly operational in 2018 with its own token, BMX. It grew into a mid-tier global exchange, adding futures, staking and savings products, copy trading, an NFT marketplace and a launchpad over the following years, and has more recently added AI-based market sentiment tools, TradFi trading and a crypto prepaid card. The 2021 hack is the defining negative event. In 2025 it also opened a US-facing platform, which signals regulatory ambition but does not change anything for Canadians: I found no Canadian registration.

How Do Canadians Fund A BitMart Account?

A BitMart review for Canadians showing a dark mode FAQ section with questions about the exchange.

I could not verify Interac e-Transfer or any direct CAD deposit at BitMart. The route I recommend is the standard one for any offshore exchange: buy crypto on a Canadian exchange, then send it across. Third-party card providers and a P2P marketplace exist, but each adds cost or risk. There is no direct CAD withdrawal that I could confirm, so cashing out means sending crypto back to a Canadian exchange.

Crypto Transfer From A Canadian Exchange (Recommended)

Buy USDT, BTC or ETH on a regulated Canadian exchange like NDAX or Kraken through Interac, then withdraw to your BitMart wallet address. Crypto deposits on BitMart are free to receive. Pick the cheapest network that both sides support, for USDT usually TRON (TRC-20) instead of Ethereum (ERC-20), whose network fee is much higher. Always send a small test amount before you transfer a larger position, and confirm that the network on the sending side matches the network of the BitMart deposit address.

Card Purchase Through Third-Party Providers

BitMart's buy menu lists card purchases through third-party providers such as MoonPay and Simplex. They are instant and they charge their own fees, which are usually a percentage of the purchase and vary by provider and card. That is not cost-efficient for large amounts. Use crypto transfer from a Canadian exchange for anything beyond a small test, and compare the quote at checkout across providers before you pay.

P2P Marketplace

BitMart's P2P marketplace lets you buy and sell crypto directly with other users and supports more payment methods than the main platform. P2P carries counterparty risk. Check the trader's completion rate and history before you trade, and never release crypto before the money has actually arrived in your own account.

How Do You Get CAD Out Of BitMart?

Sell your crypto to USDT on BitMart, withdraw the USDT to a Canadian exchange such as NDAX or Kraken, sell it for CAD there and withdraw by Interac. It is a multi-step process that adds friction and network fees. Factor the round trip into your trading economics before you deposit.

What Does BitMart Cost?

A screenshot of the BitMart trading fees page, showing various crypto pairs and fee levels.

BitMart's fee structure is more complex than most exchanges and has a trap: every trading pair is sorted into Class A, B, C or D, and each class has its own spot fee level. Major pairs such as BTC/USDT, ETH/USDT, SOL/USDT and XRP/USDT sit in Class A. Smaller and newer coins sit in the higher classes, which cost more. Many of the altcoins people come to BitMart for fall into those higher classes, so the headline rate for major coins is not the rate you will pay on the coins you actually want. Class assignment is decided by BitMart based on factors like liquidity and listing recency.

The fee page confirms a 25% discount on trading fees when you pay with BMX, and futures fees of 0.04% maker and 0.06% taker for all users, before volume-based discounts. I could not extract the exact spot percentage for each class from the live page, so check the fee page for the specific pair before you trade.

Why You Should Avoid Instant Buy

One-click instant buy is a different product from the order book. The price you are shown has the platform's spread built in, and on offshore exchanges that spread can be many times larger than the trading fee. Reviewers have documented buying and selling Bitcoin on BitMart's instant buy feature at prices several percent apart at the same moment. I have seen the same pattern at other platforms, and my advice does not change: use the order book and place a limit order at or near the market price, where the fees are the published maker and taker rates.

Deposit And Withdrawal Costs

Crypto deposits are free to receive. Third-party card and bank providers charge their own fees, which BitMart does not add to. Withdrawals carry a per-network fee that moves with congestion, so read it before you confirm each one. Cheaper networks save real money on small transfers.

What Features Does BitMart Offer?

BitMart Card features with two BitMart Visa cards, one white and one black.

BitMart is one of the more feature-complete mid-tier exchanges accessible to Canadians. Its navigation lists spot trading, USDS-margined and coin-margined futures, a TradFi section for stocks, metals and forex, margin trading at up to 5x, pre-market trading, a DEX, demo trading, savings, staking, wealth management, crypto loans, copy trading, trading bots, a launchpad, an NFT marketplace, an AI hub with a sentiment tool called X Insight, and a prepaid card. I have not tested every product from Canada, and availability for Canadians can change, so confirm each one in your own account.

A Very Long Spot List, And The Scam-Token Risk

A BitMart Review for Canadians: screenshot of the BitMart exchange's crypto and stock listings.

The main reason people look at BitMart is breadth: every major asset plus a deep run of mid-caps, meme coins, DeFi tokens and early-stage listings. BitMart is known for listing new projects early, which makes it the place some Canadians go for tokens before they reach larger exchanges. The trade-off is that early listings also mean a higher chance of fraudulent or pump-and-dump projects, and users have criticized BitMart's listing standards for that reason. Research the team, the contract and the community before you buy anything that is not on several reputable exchanges. A coin being listed says nothing about whether it is worth owning.

Futures And Margin Trading

BitMart offers USDT-margined and coin-margined perpetual futures, with isolated and cross margin, stop-loss and take-profit orders and a free demo trading mode for practice. Maximum leverage varies by contract and liquidity. For Canadians who want futures that no registered Canadian exchange offers, BitMart provides plenty of choice, though its security history compared with newer platforms is a consideration. Leverage cuts both ways: a small move against a highly leveraged position can liquidate your whole margin, so start in the demo, use small size and set stops. Margin trading is listed at up to 5x and charges interest on borrowed funds, so check the cost of holding a position.

Earn: Staking And Savings

BitMart's Earn section covers savings with and without a lock-up, on-chain staking and wealth management products. The range is wide, and it suits people who want to earn yield on altcoins they plan to hold. Yield products at an offshore exchange carry counterparty risk on top of the risk of the coin itself: if the exchange has a solvency problem, both principal and yield are at risk. Rates change often, so read the current rate and the lock-up terms in the app before you commit.

BitMart Card

BitMart's menu now lists a Crypto Prepaid Card, described as a spendable Mastercard you can get instantly. Rewards, supported coins, limits and fees differ by region and change, and card availability depends on your location, so check the card page for what is offered to Canadian residents before you apply. Do not assume that a card advertised on the global site is available in Canada.

Copy Trading And Trading Bots

Copy trading lets you mirror positions from experienced traders, with statistics such as win rate, maximum drawdown and time in operation. It is a practical way into futures without managing positions yourself. Review each trader's full drawdown history, not only advertised returns, and remember that BitMart takes a share of profits on copied trades. Trading bots automate strategies for people who prefer to set rules and let them run, which does not remove market risk.

Launchpad And Early Token Access

BitMart lists a launchpad, LaunchPrime, for token and NFT launches, and an INO platform for NFT offerings. This is the sharpest differentiator for altcoin-focused users who want early access, and BMX holders typically get priority. Apply normal due diligence: many early-stage tokens are very volatile and some are outright fraudulent.

Prediction Markets

Earlier coverage mentioned a prediction market product. I could not find it on BitMart's current navigation, so I am not listing it.

P2P, NFT Marketplace And AI Tools

The P2P marketplace, an NFT marketplace and the X Insight tool, which summarizes market sentiment from posts on X, round out the ecosystem. They are extras and not reasons to choose the platform. Treat any sentiment tool as one input, not as advice.

How Does BitMart Compare To Other Exchanges Available To Canadians?

BitMart's position is clear: a very broad product set with a long altcoin list, but a documented major hack in its history, no Proof of Reserves page that I could find, and no Canadian registration. For breadth alone it beats most platforms accessible to Canadians. For safety and regulatory standing it sits below the registered options, and I would put the offshore platforms that restrict Canada in the same risk bracket.

What Are The Biggest Complaints About BitMart?

Public reviews of BitMart are mixed, as with most offshore exchanges. The complaints cluster around withdrawal blocks that require extra verification, accounts frozen after profitable trading, slow support during busy markets, outages when volatility spikes and questionable tokens listed early. I treat both praise and complaints with caution, because anyone can post a review, but the pattern is the same one I see at every unregulated platform: when something goes wrong, there is no Canadian regulator to appeal to.

The December 2021 Hack

Attackers used stolen private keys to drain hot wallets worth roughly $200 million. It was a failure of key management, not a platform-wide systems breach. The post-hack response, with a quick acknowledgement and full reimbursement from BitMart's own funds, was among the better ones in exchange history, and the move to more cold storage is the structural fix. What is missing is a way for users to verify that fix independently.

Withdrawal Verification Blocks

A consistent review pattern: users deposit, trade profitably, then find that withdrawals are blocked until they complete a higher level of identity verification than they needed to deposit. Government ID plus facial verification is the usual requirement. The fix is simple: finish the highest verification level before you make any significant deposit, and make a small test withdrawal early, not when you want to take profits.

Instant Buy Fee Trap

As explained above, one-click buys carry a spread that can dwarf the listed fee. It is one of the biggest avoidable costs on the platform. Use the order book.

Scam Token Listings

Low listing standards have let fraudulent and pump-and-dump tokens reach the marketplace, and users document buying new listings that were later delisted or collapsed. If you use the launchpad or buy early-stage listings, do extreme due diligence on the team, the smart contract, the tokenomics and the community.

Scam Awareness

BitMart's size and offshore status make it an impersonation target. Fake support accounts on Telegram, Discord and X are active. BitMart will not message you first to offer support or to ask for a private key or seed phrase. Access BitMart only through its official website and see my guide to common crypto scams in Canada.

How Do You Sign Up And Verify On BitMart?

Registration starts with an email or phone number and a password, followed by identity verification. Exchanges that serve many countries usually offer a basic level that lets you deposit and trade small amounts and a higher level, with a government ID and facial verification, that unlocks larger limits and withdrawals. Canadian residents should expect to supply a government-issued photo ID and a selfie. Do the full verification before you deposit anything meaningful. Doing it later, when you want to withdraw, is exactly how people end up waiting while their funds are blocked. Use an email address you protect with its own two-factor authentication, since your exchange account is only as safe as your inbox.

How Should You Trade Altcoins Safely On BitMart?

Treat BitMart as a trading venue, not a vault. Send over only the amount you plan to trade, place limit orders on the order book, and withdraw profits to a Canadian exchange or a hardware wallet when the trade is done. Check the pair's fee class before you buy, because the same coin can cost much more in a higher class. Look up each token on a neutral data site and on at least one other reputable exchange, read the contract address from the project's own website instead of from social media, and skip anything whose only listing is a launch event. Keep records of every deposit, trade and withdrawal. The CRA expects you to report crypto gains or income whatever platform you used, and offshore platforms rarely give you tidy Canadian tax reports. See my guide to crypto taxation in Canada.

What Is The BMX Token, And Should You Hold It?

BMX is BitMart's own token. Paying trading fees in BMX gives the 25% discount shown on the fee page, and BMX holders typically get priority in launchpad events. That is the whole case for holding it, and it is a small one. An exchange token ties part of your money to the fortunes of the same company that holds your other coins, so holding a large balance in it doubles your exposure instead of diversifying it. If you trade often enough for the discount to matter, hold only the amount you expect to burn through in fees, and never treat it as an investment.

Why Does Proof Of Reserves Matter?

Proof of Reserves is a published check, usually built on a Merkle tree, that lets each customer confirm that their balance is included in the exchange's holdings and that the total is backed. It does not prove the exchange is solvent, because it says nothing about debts, but it makes it much harder to hide missing customer funds. The collapse of FTX is why I look for it first. Where an exchange does not publish it, you are trusting the company's word, and with an offshore exchange outside Canadian oversight that is a larger leap. It is the reason my advice for BitMart is to trade there and withdraw, not to store.

What Is A Sensible First Week On BitMart?

Day one: register, finish verification and turn on every security setting. Day two: send a small test deposit from a Canadian exchange and wait for it to arrive. Day three: place one small limit order on a major pair, look at the fee you were charged and compare it with the fee page. Day four: withdraw a small amount back to your Canadian exchange to prove the exit works. Only after that should you consider a larger amount, and only for a trade you have researched. If anything on that path surprises you, stop and ask why before you add more money.

Who Should Use BitMart, And Who Should Not?

A BitMart Review for Canadians: BitMart's homepage showing "Stocks on BitMart" with a graphic of stock coins.

BitMart's main use case for Canadians is access to altcoins and early-stage listings that are not available on the registered platforms. Its wide ecosystem makes it a capable platform. The hack history and the lack of a verifiable reserves page make it a riskier custody choice than alternatives with similar functions.

Pros

  • You want access to altcoins and early listings not on major exchanges and you accept the offshore risk
  • You are a futures trader who is comfortable with high leverage and an offshore exchange's risk profile
  • You want staking or savings yield on a wide range of altcoins
  • You will use the order book, not instant buy
  • You will only deposit what you can afford not to recover in a worst-case security or solvency event
  • You will move profits to a personal hardware wallet regularly

Cons

  • You want verifiable proof of reserves: look for platforms that publish it
  • You want the lowest altcoin spot fees: the higher fee classes are expensive
  • You need Interac deposits or CAD withdrawals: use a regulated Canadian exchange
  • You want Canadian regulatory protection: use NDAX, Kraken or Coinbase
  • You are a beginner, since the asset classes, fee tiers and instant buy trap suit experienced users only
  • You plan to leave large balances on the exchange

Is BitMart Worth It For Canadians In 2026?

BitMart is a feature-rich offshore exchange, and for the specific cases where you need its altcoin list it can do the job. The honest counterweight is the December 2021 hack, the missing reserves page and the lack of any Canadian registration. The reimbursement was admirable and the cold storage upgrade was the right response, but you cannot independently check the current backing of your holdings. If the altcoin or early listing you want is only on BitMart, use the order book (never instant buy), finish the highest verification level before depositing, turn on every security feature, and move profits to a personal wallet regularly. Do not treat BitMart as a place to store crypto long term. Use a CSA-regulated Canadian exchange for core holdings, and for BitMart deposit, trade and withdraw. If you still want to try it, you can sign up through BitMart. Otherwise start with the best crypto exchanges for Canadians or take the exchange quiz.

What Changed For BitMart In October 2026?

  • No BitMart entry was found in FINTRAC's money services business registry.
  • BitMart's fee page shows futures fees of 0.04% maker and 0.06% taker, up from the 0.02% maker I listed earlier.
  • BitMart continues to offer a 25% fee discount when fees are paid in BMX.
  • BitMart suffered a hot wallet hack worth roughly $200 million and covered customer losses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is BitMart Legal In Canada?

BitMart is not registered with the CSA as far as I could verify, and I found no entry for it in FINTRAC's registry. Check its terms for your province before you register, and remember that no Canadian regulator oversees your funds.

Is BitMart Safe For Canadians?

It is a real exchange that reimbursed users after its December 2021 hack, but it is unregulated in Canada and I could not find a Proof of Reserves page. Turn on every security feature, finish verification before depositing, and never leave large balances on the exchange.

Does BitMart Accept Interac Or CAD?

I could not verify Interac e-Transfer or CAD deposits. The usual route is to buy crypto on a Canadian exchange and send it over. Card purchases go through third-party providers, which charge their own fees.

What Are BitMart's Fees?

Spot fees depend on the pair class, A to D, with higher classes costing more. Futures are 0.04% maker and 0.06% taker, and paying fees with BMX gives a 25% discount. Avoid instant buy, whose spread can be much larger than the listed fee.

Has BitMart Been Hacked?

Yes. A hacker drained hot wallets worth roughly $200 million in December 2021, and BitMart said it covered customer losses from its own funds. Unconfirmed reports of a leaked user database surfaced in July 2025.

Does BitMart Have Proof Of Reserves?

I could not find one on its current site. Its homepage describes hybrid hot and cold wallets and multi-signature technology, which you cannot verify independently.

Why Are My BitMart Withdrawals Blocked?

The usual reason is incomplete identity verification. Withdrawals often need a higher verification level than deposits, so finish it before you deposit and test a small withdrawal early.

What Is A Safer Alternative To BitMart In Canada?

Kraken has a deep coin list and CSA registration. Coinbase is simpler for beginners, and NDAX has a flat 0.20% fee.

How Do I Cash Out From BitMart In Canada?

Send crypto to a Canadian exchange, sell it for CAD there and withdraw by Interac. I could not confirm a direct CAD withdrawal from BitMart.

BitMart has stopped new sign-ups and is shutting down. I recommend Coinbase, #1 on my list
