Free Crypto In Canada: Airdrops, Rewards And What Is Actually Real

Last updated October 2, 2026

Our top pick for Canadians: CoinbaseSign Up

Free crypto in Canada is real but small: the honest sources are referral bonuses, card cashback, staking rewards, learn-and-earn quizzes and occasional airdrops. The honest ways to get free bitcoin in Canada are sign-up and referral bonuses at registered exchanges, cashback on a crypto card, staking rewards on coins you already own, learn-and-earn quizzes, and the small rewards from a few apps. None of it is truly free, and none of it will make you rich. Most bonuses ask you to deposit or trade first, staking rewards cost a platform fee, and the CRA treats rewards as income. Anything that promises doubled coins or guaranteed daily profit is a scam.

  • Verified referral offers today: Newton (CAD 20 for the friend) and Shakepay ($20 each).
  • Cashback: the Shakepay card pays up to 1.5% in bitcoin.
  • Passive rewards: staking on Coinbase, Kraken, Wealthsimple, Newton and NDAX, minus their fees.

Free crypto is basically free money, and the more you have, the better chances of growing your cryptocurrency holdings and reaching your investment goals. That is how I opened this guide, and it needs one correction. It is only free if you read the terms. Many of the offers I used to list have ended, changed or could not be confirmed, so this version only states the ones I could check.

There are several ways you can earn free bitcoin in legitimate ways in Canada. Much like how companies and banks offer a sign up bonus, cashback rewards, or other incentives, many Canadian crypto companies do the same thing. In this article, we will explore some of the ways in which you can earn free bitcoin and other crypto.

1. How Do Sign-Up Bonuses Give You Free Bitcoin?

Years ago, when bitcoin first appeared, it wasn't easy to get hold of, let alone free bitcoins. Today it's a different story. There are many different crypto exchanges trying to get the most customers. They are all competing with each other for your attention. So, as with other businesses and banks, they have to do something to make them stand out and appeal to the most customers. This is where a referral bonus and incentives for free bitcoin comes in.

Many crypto exchanges in Canada will offer a bonus on account opening, which you can then trade for any crypto, including bitcoin. When you sign up to some of these exchanges, you can then get your own referral link and give it to friends. When they use your link, you may both earn a bonus. The table above shows what I could verify.

Coinbase: Up To CA$200 Banner, Terms Unverified

9.8/10

Best for: beginners who want a regulated app first and a bonus second.

CSA-registered Restricted Dealer in all provinces and territories.

  • BonusThe Canadian homepage advertises up to CA$200 for getting started. I could not retrieve the terms, so I do not know what you have to do or what the average payout is.
  • CAD FundingFree Interac e-Transfer and EFT.
  • Coins200+ assets

Newton: CAD 20 Welcome Bonus For A Friend

7.9/10

Best for: simple CAD trading with a small starter bonus.

CSA-registered CIRO investment dealer since March 18, 2026.

  • BonusA friend who signs up gets a CAD 20 welcome bonus after trading CAD 100 within 90 days. The person who refers earns up to CAD 100.
  • CAD FundingFree Interac e-Transfer, EFT and wire deposits.

Newton is a Canadian crypto platform that offers a simple trading platform for beginners. Its spread is 1.00% to 1.60% depending on the coin, so a small bonus can be eaten by costs if you trade a lot. I used to call it a no-fee exchange, and that is not how the fee schedule reads today.

Shakepay: $20 Each When You Invest $100

unranked

Best for: Bitcoin and Ethereum buyers who like a card and a free Interac withdrawal.

CSA-registered CIRO investment dealer member since January 8, 2025.

  • BonusThe referral page says you'll both get $20 when you invest $100 in crypto within 30 days.
  • CoinsBitcoin, Ethereum and USDC only.
  • CostSpread-based, targeting 0.5% to 2.0%, and it can be up to 1.5% higher in adverse conditions.

I used to say Shakepay gave $5, and that has changed. Shakepay is a popular Canadian crypto exchange to buy bitcoin and Ethereum, and you can deposit fiat money via Interac e-Transfer.

I have dropped the other bonuses I used to list. I could not confirm current amounts at NDAX, Bull Bitcoin, Netcoins or Wealthsimple, and Bitbuy has been folded into Robinhood. I also no longer list Bitget, which is not available to Canadians. I will not repeat my old claim that you could collect $235 in total, because the numbers behind it are gone.

2. Can You Earn Free Bitcoin Cashback With Crypto Cards?

Crypto Visa cards that pay cashback in bitcoin

As with regular credit cards from a bank, crypto cards in Canada will usually give you shopping rewards as well. These cards are a way to earn bitcoin when you shop online or spend money, but the reward comes out of a spending habit, not out of thin air. Here is what I could check.

Shakepay Card

Shakepay card that pays bitcoin cashback

If you're wondering how to get bitcoin for free then the Shakepay card is one answer. Shakepay says it pays up to 1.5% in bitcoin cashback on every purchase, settled automatically to the bitcoin balance in your Shakepay account. It has no annual fee and no credit check, and it is available to Shakepay customers in all 13 provinces and territories. You can move your free bitcoin to a private wallet if you wish, or keep it on the exchange to trade for Ethereum. The earlier rate I quoted, 1% plus an extra 1% on the first $5,000, is not what the card page says now, and the page does not list a cap.

Other Cards And Cashback Sites

I used to describe the Netcoins card, the Crypto.com card tiers paid in CRO, and Coinmiles, a service that pays crypto when you shop through its links. I could not confirm current rates for any of them. Crypto.com is a CSA-registered Restricted Dealer in Canada, and Netcoins is on the CSA list too, with its latest amended decision on September 16, 2026, but that tells you about regulation, not about reward rates. If you use one of them, read the rate and the lock-up terms on the card page before you spend. For more, see my page on the best crypto Visa cards for Canadians.

3. Can You Get Free Crypto Through Staking?

Graphic explaining crypto staking

One of the most popular ways to earn free bitcoin is to stake your cryptocurrency holdings. Staking means to put your crypto to work and allow it to validate the transactions on the network. All you have to do is lock up your crypto for a certain time period. The crypto exchange you use will take care of the rest. Two things to know first. Bitcoin itself cannot be staked, so staking pays you in other coins. And the platform takes a cut.

Staking At Registered Canadian Platforms, Checked October 2026
PlatformWhat It SaysPlatform Cut
CoinbaseStake ETH, ADA, SOL, ATOM or XTZ for up to 10% APY in eligible jurisdictions35% standard commission
KrakenStaking is available to Canadians, except Opt-in Rewards, GRT and FLR, and Babylon Bitcoin StakingNot retrieved
Wealthsimple CryptoStake and earn up to 5% per year30% of rewards (Core, Premium), 15% (Generation)
NewtonUp to 4.5% APY shown: SOL up to 4.5%, ADA up to 2.2%, ETH up to 1.5%, estimates not guaranteedBuilt into the rate shown
NDAXOpt-in staking and Auto Earn20% administration fee

The old numbers I quoted, up to 12% on Polkadot at NDAX and 4% on Bitcoin at Crypto.com, are not on the current pages, so I have removed them. Crypto.com's staking details were not verifiable this time. Rewards are paid in the coin you stake, so stake a coin that you actually want to hold. It's possible to also stake some cryptocurrencies directly through a Ledger hardware wallet, which keeps your keys in your own hands while you earn rewards, and you can manage staking in the Ledger Live app. Remember, a high yield is a price for risk, not a gift.

The tax is plain. The CRA says rewards from staking on a centralized exchange are generally income at the time they are credited to your wallet. Read my staking and tax guide.

4. What Micro Tasks Pay You In Bitcoin?

There are some micro tasks you can do to earn bitcoins and crypto. Although the amount of crypto you earn will be small, it is still free and can add up over time.

Shake Your Phone

Shakepay has been known for letting users earn small amounts of bitcoin by opening the app and shaking the phone. The more consecutive days in a row you shake, the more you earn, though you hit a cap eventually. I could not confirm the current payout on Shakepay's own pages, so check the app for what is on offer today. Expect a few dollars a month at best.

Learn And Earn

There are also ways you can earn crypto by taking quizzes, on sites such as CoinMarketCap Earn and Coinbase Learning Rewards. The benefit is you get to learn a little more about cryptocurrencies while earning crypto rewards. Coinbase's page would not load for me, so I cannot say whether the program is open to Canadians now. Check your country before you start, and never hand over a seed phrase or a wallet connection to claim a reward.

5. Are Airdrops A Safe Way To Get Free Crypto?

Often, crypto projects or exchanges will do an airdrop. An airdrop is when a cryptocurrency is automatically sent to your wallet. Usually, an airdrop is a marketing strategy also used with initial coin offerings to promote a new cryptocurrency. Sometimes there are things you need to do to qualify, but often these are simple tasks like signing up on a website or participating in the online community. Sometimes, you have to hold another cryptocurrency in your wallet. If this is the case, a snapshot is taken of all wallets to prove who held the coin, and then the new crypto is airdropped to your wallet.

Airdrops are popular because that crypto could turn out to be successful and rise in value sometime down the line. You could also trade the crypto for another one of your choice. They are also a favourite bait for scammers. To find airdrops, keep up to date with your favourite projects on their official social accounts. Never connect your wallet or approve a transaction on a website you aren't familiar with, because a malicious approval can empty the wallet. Be wary of phishing links as well. Do not treat any platform as automatically safe: I used to say the safest route was a big exchange, but the real rule is to verify the airdrop on the project's official channels first. The CRA's crypto pages do not address airdrops by name, so record the value on the day you receive one and ask an accountant how to report it.

Spotting A Free Bitcoin Scam

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre lists the red flags: unsolicited investment opportunities, higher-than-normal returns, fake cryptocurrency websites, high pressure tactics and requests for cryptocurrency payments. It also warns that there isn't the protection from fraud when using cryptocurrencies that there is when using a credit card, and that no government agency will ever ask for payment in crypto. If a site wants a fee up front to release your free bitcoin, it is a scam.

6. Can You Mine Free Bitcoin From Canada?

Mining crypto is for proof of work coins like bitcoin. How does bitcoin mining work? Miners solve computational puzzles and the first miner to solve the puzzle wins and gets to add the next block (filled with transactions) to the blockchain. The prize is free bitcoin.

You cannot mine bitcoin with a regular computer, however. You need so much computing power that you will need to buy specialized bitcoin miners as well as somewhere cool to house them, and electricity is a major cost. Whether you get your money back depends on the price of bitcoin and your power rate, so I will not promise a profit. The CRA says the value of crypto you receive for mining must be included in your business income at the time it is earned, and that mining is generally considered carrying on a business because of the scale and resources involved.

What About Cloud Mining?

I used to describe the cloud mining service ECOS here. I have removed it. I could not confirm it as a trustworthy option today, and cloud mining contracts are a common scam format: you pay up front and the dashboard shows daily coins you cannot withdraw. If you want to try cloud mining, treat the money as already spent.

7. Can You Get Bitcoin Rewards For Everyday Tasks?

Brave browser rewards screen showing BAT earned

Another way to earn crypto is by doing everyday tasks. Use the Brave Browser to earn BAT, just by surfing the internet. With Brave, you can choose how many ads you see when you browse the internet, and the more ads you choose to view, the more you earn. Brave's page says to earn BAT you connect a payout account, either from a custodial partner or your own crypto account, and that support varies by region. It does not name Canada, so check inside the browser before you count on it. You can also play games for crypto. CoinHuntWorld is a mobile game that involves walking outside and solving puzzles to earn. I have dropped play-to-earn games like Axie Infinity, because I could not confirm they are worth the time or the risk today.

Do You Pay Tax On Free Bitcoin In Canada?

Yes, assume you do. The CRA says rewards, for example from mining or staking, are reportable, and it lists gifts and donations, bartering and selling as transactions you report. For a sign-up bonus or a referral reward, the CRA's guide does not use those words, so the safe approach is to record the CAD value on the day you receive it and treat it as income. When you later sell the coins, the gain or loss is measured from that value. Keep records for at least six years from the end of the last tax year they relate to. My tax reporting guide has the full list.

Oleg’s take

The free bitcoin that has actually paid me is exchange referral bonuses. They take a few minutes to claim when you open an account. If you sign up anywhere, please use my links on the bonus links page.

What Changed For Free Bitcoin Offers In Canada In October 2026?

  • Shakepay's referral page shows $20 each when you invest $100 within 30 days, up from the $5 I used to list.
  • Newton's referral program shows a CAD 20 welcome bonus for a friend after a CAD 100 trade within 90 days.
  • Wealthsimple updated its crypto fee schedule, which sets the real cost of any bonus you trade there.
  • The CSA issued an amended decision for Netcoins, adding Solana.
  • Robinhood closed its WonderFi purchase, and Bitbuy customers are being moved to the Robinhood app, so I no longer list a Bitbuy bonus.

So What Is The Best Way To Get Free Bitcoin?

As you can see, there are ways to earn free bitcoin and free crypto, but fewer than I once wrote. You can stake your crypto and earn rewards, minus the platform's cut, and that is often better than a traditional savings account, though it carries risk a savings account does not. You can earn small amounts with a crypto card, referral bonuses and the odd app. Keep your expectations modest, read every term, and keep your records, since all of it can end up on your tax return.
