To buy Tezos (XTZ) in Canada, sign up to a CSA-registered exchange that lists it, verify your ID, add Canadian dollars and buy. On my list, Coinbase (9.8), Kraken (9.2) and Newton (7.9) carry XTZ and are registered with Canadian regulators. BloFin, MEXC and Bitunix also list it, but they are offshore and not for Canadian residents to rely on.

| Bitunix | Offshore, terms prohibit Canada | See Bitunix fee page | No CAD funding | Not ranked | Buy XTZ |
| Crypto.com | CSA-registered (Restricted Dealer) | Not published for Canada | Not verified | Not ranked | Buy XTZ |
Coinbase and Crypto.com publish one global coin list, not a Canadian one. Check the coin in their Canadian app before you fund an account.
Listings are checked against each exchange's public asset feed as of October 2026. The Coinbase and Crypto.com feeds are global rather than Canada-filtered, so confirm that XTZ shows up in your Canadian app before you deposit anything. Wealthsimple Crypto publishes no machine-readable coin list, so I do not claim it carries XTZ. Bitbuy and Coinsquare are left out because new accounts are being folded into Robinhood.
Which Exchange Should You Use For XTZ?
- Coinbase (9.8 out of 10) CSA-registered First-time buyers who want a regulated, simple app. Interac e-Transfer and EFT are free to add cash. Simple buys cost up to 1.875% plus the spread, about $9.38 on $500.
- BloFin (9.6 out of 10) Offshore Experienced traders after low fees on altcoins and futures. It has no CAD funding. Spot fees are 0.1% each way ($0.50 on $500 at the base tier). BloFin's Terms of Use name Canada as a Restricted Location.
- Kraken (9.2 out of 10) CSA-registered Beginners who want to learn, then cheaper trading on Kraken Pro. Interac e-Transfer deposits are free. Kraken Pro charges 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker (the taker fee is $4.00 on $500), and Instant Buy is 1% ($5.00 on $500).
- Newton (7.9 out of 10) CSA-registered Beginners who want a Canadian-regulated dealer with free CAD funding. Interac e-Transfer, wire and EFT are free. There is no trading fee; the cost is a spread that starts at 1.00% on BTC and differs by coin, so read the quote on the order screen.
- MEXC (7.0 out of 10) Offshore Experienced traders hunting small-cap altcoins. No CAD funding verified. Maker is 0% and taker 0.05% ($0.25 on $500) at the base tier. MEXC's User Agreement names Canada as a prohibited jurisdiction.
- Bitunix (not scored) Offshore Experienced traders after low-fee altcoin trading. It has no CAD funding. Spot maker is 0.08% ($0.40 on $500) and taker 0.10% ($0.50) at the base tier. Bitunix's Restricted Regions notice names Canada as a Prohibited Jurisdiction.
- Crypto.com (not scored) CSA-registered A broad app with a crypto card. CAD funding methods are not something I could verify, so check inside your account. Crypto.com does not publish a Canada fee schedule that I could verify, so the in-app quote is the only reliable number.
Offshore Not registered with the Canadian Securities Administrators, and the terms of service of BloFin, MEXC and Bitunix restrict or exclude Canadian residents. No Canadian investor protection applies. They suit experienced traders who accept that risk, not first-time buyers.
Why Buy Tezos (XTZ)?
Tezos (XTZ) isn't just another cryptocurrency. It's a self-upgrading blockchain with proof-of-stake, built for secure, evolving dApps. Canadians might be drawn to its adaptability and staking rewards, whether you're in Vancouver or the Prairies. But a quick heads-up: crypto investments are risky, so always weigh the ups and downs before jumping in.

What Is Tezos (XTZ) And How Does It Work?
Tezos' documentation describes a proof-of-stake blockchain that supports several high-level languages, including variants of JavaScript and TypeScript, Python and OCaml, for building decentralized applications.
Bakers stake tez to earn rewards for creating blocks, and holders can stake without running a node. Governance is stakeholder-led: anyone who holds tez can propose changes to network parameters, features and even core mechanisms. Smart Rollups add a layer 2 option for more processing power.
Tezos has a built-in, on-chain mechanism for proposing, selecting, testing and activating protocol upgrades without a hard fork. The amendment process has five sequential periods: Proposal, Exploration, Cooldown, Promotion and Adoption, each lasting about 14 cycles.
Only delegates can vote, and their voting power is the tez they have staked plus the tez delegated to them. During Proposal, delegates can submit up to 20 proposals, and a proposal needs a supermajority of more than 80% Yea among Yea and Nay votes, with a quorum that adjusts dynamically based on previous votes.
During Cooldown the community sets up test networks, a final supermajority vote happens in Promotion, and after the Adoption period mainnet automatically enables the new protocol.
What Is Tezos (XTZ) Used For?
Tez is the native token, used for staking, governance participation and transaction fees. Accounts use tz addresses.
What Are The Risks Of Buying Tezos (XTZ)?
Staking rewards vary and are not guaranteed, and a baker's performance affects what you earn. Check the baker's track record and fees before delegating.
Because delegates carry the voting weight of everyone who delegated to them, who you delegate to is also a governance choice. Pick a baker whose approach to upgrades you are comfortable with.
Which Wallets Work With Tezos (XTZ)?
Temple Wallet is a non-custodial wallet that supports Tezos, Etherlink and other EVM networks, with browser extensions and iOS and Android apps. Its site names security audits by Least Authority and Cossack Labs and says its code is open source.
How Do You Delegate Tezos Step By Step?
- Move your XTZ to a wallet that supports Tezos. Temple Wallet, described above, is one option.
- Choose a baker. Compare fees and track record, since delegators share in rewards but bear their baker's performance.
- Delegate or stake from the wallet. The docs say holders can stake tez to earn rewards without running a node.
- Watch for governance. Your baker votes with the weight of your delegation, so check how they vote on protocol upgrades.
- Record rewards for tax. Staking income has tax consequences; my staking and tax guide covers them.
How Do Tezos Upgrades Reach Holders?
You do not have to do anything. When a proposal clears the supermajority vote and finishes its Adoption period, mainnet automatically enables the new protocol, with no hard fork and no manual step for holders. That is the "self-upgrading" idea in practice: the rules change on chain, in public, with a testing window before activation.
What Are Tezos Smart Rollups?
Smart Rollups are a layer 2 feature described in the Tezos docs as a way to dramatically expand processing power. For a buyer the practical point is that Tezos is trying to scale without raising fees on the main chain. It does not change how you buy, hold or send XTZ.
How Much Does It Cost To Buy $500 Of Tezos (XTZ) In Canada?
| Platform | Published Cost |
|---|---|
| Coinbase | Simple buys cost up to 1.875% plus the spread, about $9.38 on $500. |
| BloFin | Spot fees are 0.1% each way ($0.50 on $500 at the base tier). |
| Kraken | Kraken Pro charges 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker (the taker fee is $4.00 on $500), and Instant Buy is 1% ($5.00 on $500). |
| Newton | There is no trading fee; the cost is a spread that starts at 1.00% on BTC and differs by coin, so read the quote on the order screen. |
| MEXC | Maker is 0% and taker 0.05% ($0.25 on $500) at the base tier. |
| Bitunix | Spot maker is 0.08% ($0.40 on $500) and taker 0.10% ($0.50) at the base tier. |
| Crypto.com | Crypto.com does not publish a Canada fee schedule that I could verify, so the in-app quote is the only reliable number. |
The spread is the gap between the price you see and the price you get, and it never appears as a line item. Compare the final quote on the order screen, not the headline fee. Offshore platforms show lower headline fees, but they cannot take Canadian dollars and their terms restrict Canadians.
How Do You Buy Tezos (XTZ) In Canada Step By Step?
- Sign up to Coinbase. Use the Coinbase link and create an account. Coinbase is a CSA Restricted Dealer.
- Verify your identity. Upload a government-issued ID and a selfie. Verification can take up to 24 hours.
- Add Canadian dollars. Interac e-Transfer and EFT are free to add cash. Cards are quicker but usually cost more.
- Buy XTZ. Search for XTZ, confirm it appears in your Canadian app, then read the fee preview before you confirm.
- Move long-term holdings to your own wallet. Send a small test amount first.
Can You Stake Tezos In Canada?
Coinbase lists XTZ among the assets it supports for staking in eligible jurisdictions. Rewards are shown as "up to" figures and are not guaranteed, and staking has its own tax consequences; see crypto staking and taxes in Canada.
How Do You Move Tezos (XTZ) From An Exchange To A Wallet?
- Pick a wallet that supports XTZ. Check the wallet vendor's own supported-asset page, not a forum post.
- Match the network. The same ticker can exist on more than one network, and the deposit address must be on the network you withdraw from. A mismatch can mean lost funds.
- Check for a memo or tag. Some networks need one when you deposit to an exchange. Wallets you control usually do not, but read the withdrawal screen.
- Copy the address from the wallet, never from a message. Paste it, then compare the first and last characters.
- Send a small test amount. Once it arrives, send the rest.
- Back up the seed phrase offline. Anyone who has it controls the coins, and nobody can reset it for you.
How Do You Store Tezos (XTZ)?
For short-term trading, keeping XTZ on Coinbase or Kraken is fine if the platform is registered and has decent security. For long-term holding, transfer it to a secure crypto wallet. Exchanges can get hacked, which is why holdings you do not plan to trade belong in your own wallet. My best wallets for Canadians guide has the picks. A hardware wallet such as Ledger is the safest route, and a software wallet works too, as long as you confirm it supports XTZ and the right network before you send anything. Write the seed phrase down and keep it offline, never on your phone.
How Do You Sell Tezos (XTZ) In Canada?
Ready to cash out? Move your XTZ back to your exchange wallet first. On Coinbase, find XTZ, hit Sell and convert to CAD, then withdraw to your bank. Then withdraw via e-Transfer or wire. My guide on how to sell or cash out crypto in Canada has the full steps, and every swap can be a taxable event.
Do You Pay Tax When You Buy Tezos (XTZ) In Canada?
Buying XTZ with Canadian dollars is not itself a taxable event. Selling it, swapping it for another coin or spending it can be. The CRA says that, depending on your activities, you may realize business income (or loss) or a capital gain (or loss), and the two are reported differently. Record the date and CAD value of every buy, sale and swap. See my crypto taxation guide and how to report your crypto taxes.
What Changed For Buying Tezos (XTZ) In Canada In October 2026?
- Kraken republished its fee schedule, with Pro spot starting at 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker.
- Coinbase launched regulated crypto derivatives for eligible Canadian investors. It is not open to ordinary retail accounts.
- Robinhood closed its WonderFi acquisition, and Coinsquare customers are being moved in phases to the Robinhood app, so Coinsquare and Bitbuy are no longer places to open a new account.

Delegates vote, and their voting power equals the tez they have staked plus the tez delegated to them. If you delegate, your baker votes with your weight, so choose one whose approach you are comfortable with.

Yes. The Tezos docs say holders can stake tez to earn rewards without running a node, by delegating to a baker. Rewards vary and are not guaranteed.

The Tezos documentation says the network supports several high-level languages for building decentralized applications, including variants of JavaScript and TypeScript, Python and OCaml. That matters for developers more than for buyers, but it shows the project is aimed at people who build on it, not only people who trade it, which is a fair thing to weigh when you decide how much to hold.
