Our top pick for Canadians: CoinbaseSign Up

To buy Kusama (KSM) in Canada, open an account on a CSA-registered exchange that lists it, verify your ID, deposit Canadian dollars and place the order. On my scorecard that means Coinbase (9.8), Kraken (9.2) and Crypto.com.

BloFin and MEXC also list it, but they are offshore, so read the labels before you consider them.

  1. Coinbase, 9.8: a large, familiar app with free Interac funding
  2. Kraken, 9.2: free Interac deposits and cheaper trading on Kraken Pro
  3. Crypto.com: a broad app, though its Canadian fee schedule is not published where I could check

I have been trading crypto in Canada since 2016 and I have tested 61 exchanges to find the best ways for Canadians to buy coins like this one, and I share what I find on my YouTube channel, OCryptoCanada, and in the r/OCryptoCanada community. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned trader, this guide will help you make a smart, informed decision.

Part of my guide to how to buy crypto in Canada.

Why Buy Kusama (KSM)?

Kusama (KSM) isn’t just another cryptocurrency, it’s Polkadot’s wild cousin, a blockchain playground for testing cutting-edge features and dApps with real stakes. Canadians might be drawn to its experimental vibe and staking rewards, whether you’re in Vancouver or the Prairies.

A quick heads-up: crypto investments are risky, so always weigh the ups and downs before jumping in. I am not quoting a live KSM price here, since it would be out of date within hours. Check the order screen of your platform for the current CAD price, and judge any coin by what it does rather than by a chart. The facts below come from the project's own site, docs or whitepaper, or from the wallet vendor's own support pages.

What Is Kusama, And Why Is It Called A Canary Network?

The Polkadot Wiki describes Kusama as a canary network for Polkadot: an earlier release of the code that is available first and holds real economic value. It serves as a proving ground for runtime upgrades, on-chain governance and parachains, and the wiki calls it experimental with the warning 'Expect Chaos'. The wiki says Kusama has no central kill switch and that all changes are made through the protocol's on-chain governance. It also says Kusama runs roughly four times as fast as Polkadot, with eras of about 6 hours versus about 24 hours.

KSM is Kusama's native token and can be used for transaction fees, staking, governance, buying coretime and other key functions. People eligible from the original Polkadot sale could claim a proportional amount of KSM through the Kusama Claims process.

How Do Staking And Governance Work On Kusama?

Kusama uses OpenGov, where KSM holders can vote, delegate their voting power and place deposits for referenda. KSM holders can stake by validating or nominating, and nominating means locking tokens on-chain and selecting validators to back. Nomination pools let people with small amounts stake KSM with only a minimal bond.

The risk is slashing. If a validator misbehaves, both the validator and its nominators can be slashed, with stake partially or fully confiscated by the network. An unbonding period acts as a safety net for slashing offences found in past eras.

What Changed In The October 2025 Asset Hub Migration?

On October 7, 2025, Kusama migrated KSM balances, staking and governance from the Relay Chain to Kusama Asset Hub. Wallets handled it automatically and user addresses stayed the same. Nova Wallet's FAQ says staking rewards and governance votes carried over automatically, no user action was needed, and the minimum balance requirement fell from 0.00033 KSM to 0.0000033 KSM. It also warned of 8 to 10 hours of paused transfers during the move. If you read a guide that talks about Relay Chain balances, it may predate this.

Can You Bridge KSM To Polkadot?

Polkadot and Kusama are connected by a bridge in which each Bridge Hub runs a light client of the other network, set up through OpenGov referenda. Bridging KSM to Polkadot needs about 0.4 KSM for fees. The wiki warns that bridged assets sent to an account that has not been set up correctly on the destination chain can be trapped, and recommends a dry run before transferring.

Where Can You Buy Kusama (KSM) In Canada?

These are the platforms on my scorecard whose asset lists include KSM, in my fixed ranking order. Wealthsimple is left out because it publishes no coin list I can check, and I will not claim it carries KSM. Bitbuy and Coinsquare are left out because new accounts are being folded into Robinhood.

Asset lists differ by region and change over time, so confirm that KSM shows up in the app before you fund an account.

Buy Kusama (KSM) On Coinbase

Coinbase is a CSA Restricted Dealer, which makes it the easiest registered place to start. Interac e-Transfer and bank EFT are free for adding Canadian dollars. A simple buy costs up to 1.875% plus the spread, depending on how you pay, so compare the final quote against your other options before you confirm. Read my Coinbase review.

Buy Kusama (KSM) On BloFin

Offshore Not registered with the Canadian Securities Administrators, and its terms of service restrict Canadian residents. No Canadian investor protection applies. Only experienced traders who accept that risk would consider it, and I do not recommend it for Canadians.

BloFin lists KSM, with spot fees of 0.1% and no CAD funding. Its Terms of Use name Canada as a restricted location, so a Canadian account would break them. Read my BloFin review.

Buy Kusama (KSM) On Kraken

Kraken is also a CSA Restricted Dealer, and Interac e-Transfer deposits are free. Instant Buy costs 1%, while Kraken Pro starts at 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker, so anyone buying more than a token amount should switch to Pro. Read my Kraken review.

Buy Kusama (KSM) On MEXC

Offshore Not registered with the Canadian Securities Administrators, and its terms of service restrict Canadian residents. No Canadian investor protection applies. It attracts people hunting small-cap altcoins, but I do not recommend it for Canadians.

MEXC lists KSM, with spot fees of 0% maker and 0.05% taker and no verified CAD funding. Its User Agreement, last updated May 29, 2025, names Canada as a prohibited jurisdiction. Read my MEXC review.

Buy Kusama (KSM) On Crypto.com

Crypto.com serves Canadians through Foris DAX CAN ULC, a CSA Restricted Dealer. Its Canadian marketing says maker and taker fees run as low as 0.08% and 0.18%, but I could not retrieve its Canadian fee schedule, so treat that as a best case and read the order preview. Deposits by bank transfer, card or crypto are listed as zero-fee. Read my Crypto.com review.

How Do You Buy Kusama (KSM) In Canada Step By Step?

  1. Sign up to Coinbase. I use Coinbase here because it is the first CSA-registered platform in the table above that lists KSM. Download the app or use the website.
  2. Verify your identity. Upload a government-issued ID and a selfie, and sometimes proof of address. Verification can take up to 24 hours, so do it before you plan to buy.
  3. Deposit Canadian dollars. Interac e-Transfer and bank EFT are free for adding cash on Coinbase, and card and PayPal also work for buying, but they usually cost more.
  4. Find KSM. Search for the name and the ticker and check that both match. Some tickers are shared by unrelated coins, so confirm you picked Kusama.
  5. Place the order. Use a market order for speed or a limit order if you want to name your price. Read the fee preview, because a simple buy can cost up to 1.875% plus the spread.
  6. Move long-term holdings to your own wallet. Check that the wallet supports KSM and its network, and send a small test transfer first. My best crypto wallets for Canadians list covers the options.

Which Wallets Support Kusama (KSM), And How Do You Move It There?

Per the Polkadot Wiki, Kusama addresses start with a capital letter, while Polkadot addresses start with 1 and the generic Substrate format starts with 5. The same public key has a different address representation on each network, so make sure the address you paste is a Kusama one. The wiki says the Polkadot Ledger app can manage Polkadot, Kusama and parachain tokens, and the Generic app works with Ledger Live, Nova Wallet, Talisman and SubWallet.

Older Kusama Ledger accounts made with the legacy Kusama app must be migrated manually: install the Polkadot Migration app and the Polkadot app, then migrate assets, identities and staking to the account controlled by the Polkadot app. I found no official exchange withdrawal guide, so check the network on the withdrawal screen and send a small test first.

How Risky Is Kusama (KSM)?

Any coin outside the top few can fall hard and trade thinly, and KSM is no exception. Thin trading means a wider gap between the buy and sell price, and that gap is a real cost on a small order. Buy only what you can lose, and decide in advance whether this is a trade or a long-term hold. I do not make price predictions, and nobody else can either.

How Do You Store Kusama (KSM)?

Keeping your KSM safe is something you must do if you do not want to risk it being stolen. For safekeeping, use a private crypto wallet. Choose one of the crypto wallets I reviewed, and then send your KSM from the exchange you used to buy it to your wallet. If you buy any valuable cryptocurrency, always move it to a private wallet to keep it secure. Check that the wallet supports the coin and its network first, because sending to an unsupported address can lose the funds for good. Write your recovery phrase on paper, never store it in a photo or a cloud note, and never share it with anyone, including anyone claiming to be support.

How Do You Sell Kusama (KSM) In Canada?

To sell, go to the exchange where you bought it. If your coins are in a wallet, send them back to the exchange first, then click sell. You can swap KSM for another cryptocurrency, or sell it for Canadian dollars if the exchange offers that, and then withdraw to your bank account. Withdrawal fees and limits differ by platform. My guide on how to sell or cash out crypto in Canada has the full steps.

Do You Pay Tax When You Buy Kusama (KSM) In Canada?

Buying KSM with Canadian dollars is not itself a taxable event. Selling it, swapping it for another coin or spending it can be. The CRA says that, depending on your activities, you may realize business income (or loss) or a capital gain (or loss), and the two are reported differently. Record the date and CAD value of every buy, sale and swap. See my crypto taxation guide and how to report your crypto taxes.

What Changed For Buying Kusama (KSM) In Canada In October 2026?

  • Kraken republished its fee schedule, with Pro spot starting at 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker.
  • Coinbase launched regulated crypto derivatives for eligible Canadian investors through Coinbase Financial Markets. It is not a way to buy the coin itself.
  • The CSA issued a Restricted Dealer decision for Foris DAX CAN ULC, the entity behind Crypto.com in Canada.
