Our top pick for Canadians: CoinbaseSign Up

No CSA-registered exchange on my list carries IOTA (IOTA). The only platforms that list it are offshore, and their terms restrict Canadian residents.

BloFin, MEXC and Bitunix list it, and I do not recommend using them from Canada. The sensible move is to wait for a registered platform to add IOTA, or skip it.

I have been trading crypto in Canada since 2016 and I have tested 61 exchanges to find the best ways for Canadians to buy coins like this one, and I share what I find on my YouTube channel, OCryptoCanada, and in the r/OCryptoCanada community. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned trader, this guide will help you make a smart, informed decision.

Why Buy IOTA (IOTA)?

IOTA (IOTA) isn’t just another cryptocurrency, it’s a blockchain network that started out with a focus on the Internet of Things (IoT) and machine-to-machine payments. Canadians might be drawn to its futuristic tech and staking rewards, whether you’re in Vancouver or the Prairies.

A quick heads-up: crypto investments are risky, so always weigh the ups and downs before jumping in. I am not quoting a live IOTA price here, since it would be out of date within hours. Check the order screen of your platform for the current CAD price, and judge any coin by what it does rather than by a chart. The facts below come from the project's own site, docs or whitepaper, or from the wallet vendor's own support pages.

What Is IOTA Today?

This is not the same project many older guides describe. IOTA describes itself as a decentralized blockchain infrastructure to build and secure the digital world, run by the IOTA Foundation, which is registered in Berlin, Germany. The IOTA mainnet is a Move-based Layer 1 with an object-centric architecture, and IOTA also offers an EVM layer for interoperability alongside Move.

The IOTA token has four documented functions: staking in the delegated proof-of-stake mechanism, paying gas fees to run transactions and store data on chain, transferring value, and acting as the right to take part in on-chain voting.

What Changed In The IOTA Rebased Upgrade?

IOTA Rebased replaced the Stardust network on 5 May 2025, moving from a UTXO ledger to a Move-based object ledger. Token holders did not need to migrate, and existing wallets were loaded into the new wallet. The token is now represented on the network as 0x2::iota::IOTA, decimals went from 6 to 9, and Stardust balances were multiplied by 1,000 during the migration. Rebased keeps the Ed25519 scheme and existing keys remain valid, but addresses changed from Bech32 encoding to a hex format with a 0x prefix.

Holders of tokens from the older legacy (Chrysalis-era) network must use the separate IOTA Legacy Migration Tool, which accepts 81-character seeds, Trinity seed vault files or Ledger devices and outputs a 24-word recovery phrase. The Foundation warns it may eventually become impossible to migrate legacy tokens, so anyone with old holdings should not wait.

How Does IOTA Consensus Work?

Consensus combines delegated proof-of-stake with a Byzantine Fault Tolerant protocol, and all IOTA networks run the Starfish BFT consensus protocol. Token holders delegate voting power to validators, who together form the Consensus Committee, which stays stable throughout each epoch. Starfish can tolerate up to one-third of validators by stake being offline, crashed or actively misbehaving, and reaches finality in three rounds. IOTA distinguishes owned objects from shared objects: transactions that touch only owned objects use a fast path that skips global consensus ordering, and finalized transactions are recorded in checkpoints. IOTA Rebased launched with 13 validators, planned to grow to about 50 within days and to about 150 over the following months.

How Many IOTA Tokens Exist, And How Does Staking Work?

IOTA has no fixed maximum supply: total supply changes over time depending on the balance between token inflation and fee burning. About 4.6 billion IOTA were migrated from the earlier Stardust network at the Rebased launch, and 767,000 new tokens are minted each epoch. Validators earn rewards from IOTA inflation and share them with stakers. Validators set commission rates that reduce staker rewards, poorly performing validators face reduced rewards, and rewards accrue only for epochs in which the stake was active for the whole epoch.

Where Can You Buy IOTA (IOTA) In Canada?

These are the platforms on my scorecard whose asset lists include IOTA, in my fixed ranking order. Wealthsimple is left out because it publishes no coin list I can check, and I will not claim it carries IOTA. Bitbuy and Coinsquare are left out because new accounts are being folded into Robinhood.

Buy IOTA (IOTA) On BloFin

Offshore Not registered with the Canadian Securities Administrators, and its terms of service restrict Canadian residents. No Canadian investor protection applies. Only experienced traders who accept that risk would consider it, and I do not recommend it for Canadians.

BloFin lists IOTA, with spot fees of 0.1% and no CAD funding. Its Terms of Use name Canada as a restricted location, so a Canadian account would break them. Read my BloFin review.

Buy IOTA (IOTA) On MEXC

Offshore Not registered with the Canadian Securities Administrators, and its terms of service restrict Canadian residents. No Canadian investor protection applies. It attracts people hunting small-cap altcoins, but I do not recommend it for Canadians.

MEXC lists IOTA, with spot fees of 0% maker and 0.05% taker and no verified CAD funding. Its User Agreement, last updated May 29, 2025, names Canada as a prohibited jurisdiction. Read my MEXC review.

Buy IOTA (IOTA) On Bitunix

Offshore Not registered with the Canadian Securities Administrators, and its terms of service restrict Canadian residents. No Canadian investor protection applies. I do not recommend it for Canadians.

Bitunix lists IOTA, with spot fees of 0.08% maker and 0.10% taker at the base tier and no CAD funding. Its restricted regions notice names Canada as a prohibited jurisdiction.

How Do You Buy IOTA (IOTA) From Canada?

I am not going to walk you through a purchase on BloFin, MEXC and Bitunix. None of them is registered in Canada, and their terms restrict Canadian residents, so following steps there would mean breaking the rules you agree to at sign-up. If you want IOTA, my honest advice is to wait for a registered platform to list it, or to skip it. To get started with crypto in general, use my guide to buying cryptocurrency in Canada.

Which Wallets Support IOTA (IOTA), And How Do You Move It There?

The official IOTA Wallet is a Chromium-based browser extension that lets users hold coins, tokens and NFTs, send assets and stake. A mnemonic or passkey is used to create it, and losing both means permanent loss of access. It can import an existing account by mnemonic phrase or from a Ledger device. The older Firefly wallet is deprecated and Stronghold files are no longer supported.

Hardware wallet support is patchy. Ledger's support page states IOTA (MIOTA) is not yet supported inside Ledger Wallet (formerly Ledger Live) and that the IOTA app is no longer supported on the Nano S. The app is community developed and used with IOTA's own wallet. Trezor lists support for IOTA on the Trezor Safe 3, Safe 5 and Safe 7 via the IOTA EVM network, used through apps such as MetaMask and Rabby. I found no official memo or tag requirement.

How Risky Is IOTA (IOTA)?

Any coin outside the top few can fall hard and trade thinly, and IOTA is no exception. Thin trading means a wider gap between the buy and sell price, and that gap is a real cost on a small order. Buy only what you can lose, and decide in advance whether this is a trade or a long-term hold. I do not make price predictions, and nobody else can either.

How Do You Store IOTA (IOTA)?

Keeping your IOTA safe is something you must do if you do not want to risk it being stolen. For safekeeping, use a private crypto wallet. Choose one of the crypto wallets I reviewed, and then send your IOTA from the exchange you used to buy it to your wallet. If you buy any valuable cryptocurrency, always move it to a private wallet to keep it secure. Check that the wallet supports the coin and its network first, because sending to an unsupported address can lose the funds for good. Write your recovery phrase on paper, never store it in a photo or a cloud note, and never share it with anyone, including anyone claiming to be support.

How Do You Sell IOTA (IOTA) In Canada?

To sell, go to the exchange where you bought it. If your coins are in a wallet, send them back to the exchange first, then click sell. You can swap IOTA for another cryptocurrency, or sell it for Canadian dollars if the exchange offers that, and then withdraw to your bank account. Withdrawal fees and limits differ by platform. My guide on how to sell or cash out crypto in Canada has the full steps.

Do You Pay Tax When You Buy IOTA (IOTA) In Canada?

Buying IOTA with Canadian dollars is not itself a taxable event. Selling it, swapping it for another coin or spending it can be. The CRA says that, depending on your activities, you may realize business income (or loss) or a capital gain (or loss), and the two are reported differently. Record the date and CAD value of every buy, sale and swap. See my crypto taxation guide and how to report your crypto taxes.

What Changed For Buying IOTA (IOTA) In Canada In October 2026?

  • Bitunix Innovation Limited's FINTRAC registration expired.
  • Robinhood closed its WonderFi acquisition, and Coinsquare customers are being moved in phases to the Robinhood app, so I no longer point new buyers to Coinsquare or Bitbuy.
  • MEXC updated its User Agreement, and Canada is named as a prohibited jurisdiction.
