Our top pick for Canadians: CoinbaseSign Up

To buy Hyperliquid (HYPE) in Canada, open an account on a CSA-registered exchange that lists it, verify your ID, deposit Canadian dollars and place the order. On my scorecard that means Coinbase (9.8), Kraken (9.2) and Newton (7.9), and 2 more in the table below.

BloFin, MEXC and Bitunix also list it, but they are offshore, so read the labels before you consider them.

  1. Coinbase, 9.8: a large, familiar app with free Interac funding
  2. Kraken, 9.2: free Interac deposits and cheaper trading on Kraken Pro
  3. Newton, 7.9: free CAD funding at a Canadian-regulated dealer

I have been trading crypto in Canada since 2016 and I have tested 61 exchanges to find the best ways for Canadians to buy coins like this one, and I share what I find on my YouTube channel, OCryptoCanada, and in the r/OCryptoCanada community. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned trader, this guide will help you make a smart, informed decision.

Part of my guide to how to buy crypto in Canada.

Why Buy Hyperliquid (HYPE)?

Hyperliquid (HYPE) isn’t just another cryptocurrency, it’s the fuel for a high-performance Layer-1 blockchain, powering decentralized perpetual futures trading with blazing speed. Canadians might be drawn to its cutting-edge tech and trading potential, whether you’re in Vancouver or the Prairies.

A quick heads-up: crypto investments are risky, so always weigh the ups and downs before jumping in. I am not quoting a live HYPE price here, since it would be out of date within hours. Check the order screen of your platform for the current CAD price, and judge any coin by what it does rather than by a chart. The facts below come from the project's own site, docs or whitepaper, or from the wallet vendor's own support pages.

What Is Hyperliquid, And What Does HYPE Do?

Hyperliquid describes itself as a layer one blockchain written and optimised from first principles, built with the vision of a fully onchain open financial system. It uses a custom consensus algorithm called HyperBFT, inspired by HotStuff and its successors. State execution is split in two: HyperCore holds fully onchain perpetual futures and spot order books with one-block finality, and the HyperEVM is a general-purpose smart contract platform. HyperCore is documented as supporting 200k orders per second, with throughput expected to keep improving.

The docs state HYPE is used to secure the network, pay for network costs and provide trading fee discounts. It is the native gas token on the HyperEVM, which uses an Ethereum-style gas system with a base fee and priority fee.

How Do Fees And Burns Work For HYPE?

Hyperliquid states that trading fees go to the community, meaning HLP, the assistance fund and deployers, not to the team. The assistance fund converts fees to HYPE automatically, and HYPE held in it is burned, removing it permanently from circulating and total supply. I could not verify an official supply or allocation page, so I am not quoting vesting or unlock figures.

How Does Staking HYPE Work, And What Are The Catches?

You stake HYPE on HyperCore by moving it from your Spot balance to your Staking balance and choosing a validator. Staking to a validator has a 1 day lockup, and moving HYPE back to Spot goes through a 7 day unstaking queue, with up to 5 pending withdrawals at once. The documented reward rate falls as total staked HYPE rises, at roughly 2.37% a year if 400M HYPE were staked. Rewards accrue minutely, are distributed daily and compound automatically to the same validator.

Validators need 10,000 HYPE of self-delegation, locked for one year, and below that threshold a validator enters undelegate-only mode and cannot accept new stake.

What Risks Does Hyperliquid Document?

Several, and they are worth reading. Validators that fail to take part in consensus properly can be jailed and stop earning rewards, but the docs say true slashing for malicious behaviour such as double-signing is not currently implemented. The legacy Arbitrum bridge is documented as holding less than 10% of the USDC supply on HyperCore, and the bridge and its staking logic were audited by Zellic. The HyperEVM was deliberately launched with lower initial throughput, because HyperCore and the HyperEVM share state, and throughput is to be increased gradually. Add the obvious one, which is that a platform built around perpetual futures attracts leveraged trading, and leverage amplifies swings.

Where Can You Buy Hyperliquid (HYPE) In Canada?

These are the platforms on my scorecard whose asset lists include HYPE, in my fixed ranking order. Wealthsimple is left out because it publishes no coin list I can check, and I will not claim it carries HYPE. Bitbuy and Coinsquare are left out because new accounts are being folded into Robinhood.

Coinbase is a CSA Restricted Dealer, which makes it the easiest registered place to start. Interac e-Transfer and bank EFT are free for adding Canadian dollars. Kraken is also a CSA Restricted Dealer, and Interac e-Transfer deposits are free. Instant Buy costs 1%, while Kraken Pro starts at 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker, so anyone buying more than a token amount should switch to Pro. Read my Kraken review.

MEXC lists HYPE, with spot fees of 0% maker and 0.05% taker and no verified CAD funding. Its User Agreement, last updated May 29, 2025, names Canada as a prohibited jurisdiction. Read my MEXC review.

Buy Hyperliquid (HYPE) On Bitunix

Offshore Not registered with the Canadian Securities Administrators, and its terms of service restrict Canadian residents. No Canadian investor protection applies. I do not recommend it for Canadians.

Bitunix lists HYPE, with spot fees of 0.08% maker and 0.10% taker at the base tier and no CAD funding. Its restricted regions notice names Canada as a prohibited jurisdiction.

Buy Hyperliquid (HYPE) On Crypto.com

Crypto.com serves Canadians through Foris DAX CAN ULC, a CSA Restricted Dealer. Its Canadian marketing says maker and taker fees run as low as 0.08% and 0.18%, but I could not retrieve its Canadian fee schedule, so treat that as a best case and read the order preview. Deposits by bank transfer, card or crypto are listed as zero-fee. Read my Crypto.com review.

How Do You Buy Hyperliquid (HYPE) In Canada Step By Step?

  1. Sign up to Coinbase. I use Coinbase here because it is the first CSA-registered platform in the table above that lists HYPE. Download the app or use the website.
  2. Verify your identity. Upload a government-issued ID and a selfie, and sometimes proof of address. Verification can take up to 24 hours, so do it before you plan to buy.
  3. Deposit Canadian dollars. Interac e-Transfer and bank EFT are free for adding cash on Coinbase, and card and PayPal also work for buying, but they usually cost more.
  4. Find HYPE. Search for the name and the ticker and check that both match. Some tickers are shared by unrelated coins, so confirm you picked Hyperliquid.
  5. Place the order. Use a market order for speed or a limit order if you want to name your price. Read the fee preview, because a simple buy can cost up to 1.875% plus the spread.
  6. Move long-term holdings to your own wallet. Check that the wallet supports HYPE and its network, and send a small test transfer first. My best crypto wallets for Canadians list covers the options.

Which Wallets Support Hyperliquid (HYPE), And How Do You Move It There?

HYPE lives natively on the Hyperliquid L1. To use the HyperEVM you add it to a wallet as a custom network with Chain ID 999, network name Hyperliquid, RPC URL https://rpc.hyperliquid.xyz/evm and currency symbol HYPE. It uses Ethereum-style 0x addresses, and the same address works on HyperCore. HYPE moves between HyperCore Spot and the HyperEVM through the Transfer to/from EVM button, or by sending it to 0x2222222222222222222222222222222222222222, and the docs warn this works only for HYPE and other assets sent there are lost.

Trezor lists Hyperliquid (HYPE) on the HyperEVM network for the Trezor Safe 7, Safe 5 and Safe 3, usable through Trezor Suite, MetaMask and Rabby. Hyperliquid's FAQ notes some users have issues with MetaMask on the HyperEVM and suggests Rabby, and suggests updating Ledger firmware if a Ledger Transfer Failed error appears. One more catch: before sending HYPE from the HyperEVM to a centralized exchange, confirm the exchange supports the HyperEVM, because some exchanges support HYPE only from the HyperCore Spot balance. The docs advise a test transaction first.

How Risky Is Hyperliquid (HYPE)?

Any coin outside the top few can fall hard and trade thinly, and HYPE is no exception. Thin trading means a wider gap between the buy and sell price, and that gap is a real cost on a small order. Buy only what you can lose, and decide in advance whether this is a trade or a long-term hold. I do not make price predictions, and nobody else can either.

How Do You Store Hyperliquid (HYPE)?

Keeping your HYPE safe is something you must do if you do not want to risk it being stolen. For safekeeping, use a private crypto wallet. Choose one of the crypto wallets I reviewed, and then send your HYPE from the exchange you used to buy it to your wallet. If you buy any valuable cryptocurrency, always move it to a private wallet to keep it secure. Check that the wallet supports the coin and its network first, because sending to an unsupported address can lose the funds for good. Write your recovery phrase on paper, never store it in a photo or a cloud note, and never share it with anyone, including anyone claiming to be support.

How Do You Sell Hyperliquid (HYPE) In Canada?

To sell, go to the exchange where you bought it. If your coins are in a wallet, send them back to the exchange first, then click sell. You can swap HYPE for another cryptocurrency, or sell it for Canadian dollars if the exchange offers that, and then withdraw to your bank account. Withdrawal fees and limits differ by platform. My guide on how to sell or cash out crypto in Canada has the full steps.

Do You Pay Tax When You Buy Hyperliquid (HYPE) In Canada?

Buying HYPE with Canadian dollars is not itself a taxable event. Selling it, swapping it for another coin or spending it can be. The CRA says that, depending on your activities, you may realize business income (or loss) or a capital gain (or loss), and the two are reported differently. Record the date and CAD value of every buy, sale and swap. See my crypto taxation guide and how to report your crypto taxes.

What Changed For Buying Hyperliquid (HYPE) In Canada In October 2026?

  • Kraken republished its fee schedule, with Pro spot starting at 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker.
  • Coinbase launched regulated crypto derivatives for eligible Canadian investors through Coinbase Financial Markets. It is not a way to buy the coin itself.
  • Newton was admitted to CIRO membership as an investment dealer.
