To buy Helium (HNT) in Canada, open an account on a CSA-registered exchange that lists it, verify your ID, deposit Canadian dollars and place the order. On my scorecard that means Coinbase (9.8), Kraken (9.2) and Crypto.com.
BloFin, MEXC and Bitunix also list it, but they are offshore, so read the labels before you consider them.
- Coinbase, 9.8: a large, familiar app with free Interac funding
- Kraken, 9.2: free Interac deposits and cheaper trading on Kraken Pro
- Crypto.com: a broad app, though its Canadian fee schedule is not published where I could check
I have been trading crypto in Canada since 2016 and I have tested 61 exchanges to find the best ways for Canadians to buy coins like this one, and I share what I find on my YouTube channel, OCryptoCanada, and in the r/OCryptoCanada community. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned trader, this guide will help you make a smart, informed decision.

Why Buy Helium (HNT)?
Helium (HNT) isn’t just another cryptocurrency, it’s the backbone of a decentralized wireless network, powering IoT devices with real-world impact and staking rewards. Canadians might be drawn to its innovative tech and earning potential, whether you’re in Vancouver or the Prairies.
A quick heads-up: crypto investments are risky, so always weigh the ups and downs before jumping in. I am not quoting a live HNT price here, since it would be out of date within hours. Check the order screen of your platform for the current CAD price, and judge any coin by what it does rather than by a chart. The facts below come from the project's own site, docs or whitepaper, or from the wallet vendor's own support pages.
What Is Helium, And What Does HNT Do?
The Helium Network powers a global LoRaWAN network for IoT devices and a cellular offload Wi-Fi network for mobile connectivity, both run by community-operated Hotspots. Hotspot operators earn HNT for providing coverage and handling wireless traffic, while enterprises and developers burn HNT to create Data Credits that pay for network fees.
Data Credits are a USD-pegged utility token produced only by burning HNT. One DC equals $0.00001, and they are not transferable once created. That burn is the demand side of the design: people who want to use the network have to destroy HNT to do it.
How Many HNT Will Exist?
The first HNT was emitted on 29 July 2019 with no pre-mine. HNT targets a maximum supply of roughly 223 million tokens through a two-year halving schedule that began in 2019, and the docs note that slow block times in year one left issuance about 17 million HNT below the schedule. Net Emissions re-emits HNT burned for Data Credits up to a cap of 1,643.84 HNT per day, designed so miner incentives continue without exceeding the maximum supply.
What Changed When Helium Moved To Solana?
The Helium Network migrated from its own purpose-built blockchain to the Solana blockchain on 18 April 2023, so HNT is now a Solana token with the mint address hntyVP6YFm1Hg25TN9WGLqM12b8TQmcknKrdu1oxWux. Every on-chain Helium action on Solana needs SOL. The docs give an average fee of 0.000014 SOL and about 0.002 SOL of rent per token account, and if a wallet lacks enough SOL for rent, it cannot create new token accounts and transactions will fail.
There was a second change. Under HIP 138, Helium phased out the IOT and MOBILE subnetwork tokens and rewards all participants directly in HNT. Helium's HIP 138 materials state that MOBILE and IOT emissions ceased in January 2025, with fixed swap rates of 7,473.58 MOBILE or 6,608.32 IOT per HNT. If you see old guides that tell you to buy IOT or MOBILE, they are out of date.
How Does Helium Governance And Locking Work?
Helium governance uses veHNT. Locking HNT gives voting power that grows with lock length, up to four years, and delegating to a subnetwork and voting on proposals is required to earn locked-HNT rewards. Locking is a commitment, so it is not the same thing as simply holding.
Where Can You Buy Helium (HNT) In Canada?
These are the platforms on my scorecard whose asset lists include HNT, in my fixed ranking order. Wealthsimple is left out because it publishes no coin list I can check, and I will not claim it carries HNT. Bitbuy and Coinsquare are left out because new accounts are being folded into Robinhood.
| Exchange | Canadian Status | Published Fee | CAD Funding | My Rank | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Coinbase | CSA-registered (Restricted Dealer) | Up to 1.875% on simple buys, plus spread | Free Interac e-Transfer and EFT | #1 | Buy HNT |
| BloFin | Offshore, terms prohibit Canada | 0.1% spot | No CAD funding | #2 | Buy HNT |
| Kraken | CSA-registered (Restricted Dealer) | Kraken Pro 0.40% maker / 0.80% taker; Instant Buy 1% | Free Interac e-Transfer deposits | #3 | Buy HNT |
| MEXC | Offshore, terms prohibit Canada | 0% maker / 0.05% taker | No CAD funding verified | #9 | Buy HNT |
| Bitunix | Offshore, terms prohibit Canada | See Bitunix fee page | No CAD funding | Not ranked | Buy HNT |
| Crypto.com | CSA-registered (Restricted Dealer) | Not published for Canada | Not verified | Not ranked | Buy HNT |
Coinbase and Crypto.com publish one global coin list, not a Canadian one. Check the coin in their Canadian app before you fund an account.
Asset lists differ by region and change over time, so confirm that HNT shows up in the app before you fund an account.
Buy Helium (HNT) On Coinbase
Coinbase is a CSA Restricted Dealer, which makes it the easiest registered place to start. Interac e-Transfer and bank EFT are free for adding Canadian dollars. A simple buy costs up to 1.875% plus the spread, depending on how you pay, so compare the final quote against your other options before you confirm. Read my Coinbase review.
Buy Helium (HNT) On BloFin
Offshore Not registered with the Canadian Securities Administrators, and its terms of service restrict Canadian residents. No Canadian investor protection applies. Only experienced traders who accept that risk would consider it, and I do not recommend it for Canadians.
BloFin lists HNT, with spot fees of 0.1% and no CAD funding. Its Terms of Use name Canada as a restricted location, so a Canadian account would break them. Read my BloFin review.
Buy Helium (HNT) On Kraken
Kraken is also a CSA Restricted Dealer, and Interac e-Transfer deposits are free. Instant Buy costs 1%, while Kraken Pro starts at 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker, so anyone buying more than a token amount should switch to Pro. Read my Kraken review.
Buy Helium (HNT) On MEXC
Offshore Not registered with the Canadian Securities Administrators, and its terms of service restrict Canadian residents. No Canadian investor protection applies. It attracts people hunting small-cap altcoins, but I do not recommend it for Canadians.
MEXC lists HNT, with spot fees of 0% maker and 0.05% taker and no verified CAD funding. Its User Agreement, last updated May 29, 2025, names Canada as a prohibited jurisdiction. Read my MEXC review.

Bitunix lists HNT, with spot fees of 0.08% maker and 0.10% taker at the base tier and no CAD funding. Its restricted regions notice names Canada as a prohibited jurisdiction.
Buy Helium (HNT) On Crypto.com
Crypto.com serves Canadians through Foris DAX CAN ULC, a CSA Restricted Dealer. Its Canadian marketing says maker and taker fees run as low as 0.08% and 0.18%, but I could not retrieve its Canadian fee schedule, so treat that as a best case and read the order preview. Deposits by bank transfer, card or crypto are listed as zero-fee. Read my Crypto.com review.
How Do You Buy Helium (HNT) In Canada Step By Step?
- Sign up to Coinbase. I use Coinbase here because it is the first CSA-registered platform in the table above that lists HNT. Download the app or use the website.
- Verify your identity. Upload a government-issued ID and a selfie, and sometimes proof of address. Verification can take up to 24 hours, so do it before you plan to buy.
- Deposit Canadian dollars. Interac e-Transfer and bank EFT are free for adding cash on Coinbase, and card and PayPal also work for buying, but they usually cost more.
- Find HNT. Search for the name and the ticker and check that both match. Some tickers are shared by unrelated coins, so confirm you picked Helium.
- Place the order. Use a market order for speed or a limit order if you want to name your price. Read the fee preview, because a simple buy can cost up to 1.875% plus the spread.
- Move long-term holdings to your own wallet. Check that the wallet supports HNT and its network, and send a small test transfer first. My best crypto wallets for Canadians list covers the options.
Which Wallets Support Helium (HNT), And How Do You Move It There?
Any Solana-compatible wallet works with Helium, with Phantom named as an example, but Hotspot actions such as claiming rewards or onboarding need the Helium Wallet App. That app shows HNT, MOBILE, IOT, DC, SOL and USDC balances, supports up to 10 accounts and can connect to Ledger. A warning from the docs: to move a Helium Wallet App account into another Solana wallet, use the private key, not the seed phrase, because the app uses derivation path 44'/904'/n'/0' unlike standard Solana wallets.
On hardware, HNT is a Solana SPL token supported by the Solana app for Ledger but not directly in Ledger Live. You install the Solana app and enable blind signing, and the docs recommend test transfers first. Keep a small SOL balance in the receiving wallet for rent and fees before you withdraw HNT from an exchange.
How Risky Is Helium (HNT)?
Any coin outside the top few can fall hard and trade thinly, and HNT is no exception. Thin trading means a wider gap between the buy and sell price, and that gap is a real cost on a small order. Buy only what you can lose, and decide in advance whether this is a trade or a long-term hold. I do not make price predictions, and nobody else can either.
How Do You Store Helium (HNT)?
Keeping your HNT safe is something you must do if you do not want to risk it being stolen. For safekeeping, use a private crypto wallet. Choose one of the crypto wallets I reviewed, and then send your HNT from the exchange you used to buy it to your wallet. If you buy any valuable cryptocurrency, always move it to a private wallet to keep it secure. Check that the wallet supports the coin and its network first, because sending to an unsupported address can lose the funds for good. Write your recovery phrase on paper, never store it in a photo or a cloud note, and never share it with anyone, including anyone claiming to be support.
How Do You Sell Helium (HNT) In Canada?
To sell, go to the exchange where you bought it. If your coins are in a wallet, send them back to the exchange first, then click sell. You can swap HNT for another cryptocurrency, or sell it for Canadian dollars if the exchange offers that, and then withdraw to your bank account. Withdrawal fees and limits differ by platform. My guide on how to sell or cash out crypto in Canada has the full steps.
Do You Pay Tax When You Buy Helium (HNT) In Canada?
Buying HNT with Canadian dollars is not itself a taxable event. Selling it, swapping it for another coin or spending it can be. The CRA says that, depending on your activities, you may realize business income (or loss) or a capital gain (or loss), and the two are reported differently. Record the date and CAD value of every buy, sale and swap. See my crypto taxation guide and how to report your crypto taxes.
What Changed For Buying Helium (HNT) In Canada In October 2026?
- Kraken republished its fee schedule, with Pro spot starting at 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker.
- Coinbase launched regulated crypto derivatives for eligible Canadian investors through Coinbase Financial Markets. It is not a way to buy the coin itself.
- The CSA issued a Restricted Dealer decision for Foris DAX CAN ULC, the entity behind Crypto.com in Canada.
