What Is Dai (DAI)?

Dai (DAI) isn’t just another cryptocurrency, it’s a stablecoin pegged to the US dollar, offering a steady ride in the wild crypto world, backed by decentralized magic. Canadians might be drawn to its reliability and DeFi uses, whether you’re in Vancouver or the Prairies. But a quick heads-up: even stablecoins carry some risk, so always weigh the pros and cons before jumping in!

I am not quoting a live DAI price here, since it would be out of date within hours. Check the order screen of your platform for the current CAD price, and compare it with the final quote that includes the platform's fee or spread.

Where Can You Buy Dai (DAI) In Canada?

I checked the asset lists of the ranked exchanges whose listing data I hold, and none of them shows DAI. Wealthsimple Crypto publishes no machine-readable list, so I cannot confirm it either way.

Because no registered platform in my table carries DAI, I have no step-by-step buying route to recommend. Registered exchanges add assets over time, so check again before you buy. In the meantime, see how to buy cryptocurrency in Canada for the platforms I do rate.

Should You Buy Dai (DAI) In Canada Right Now?

I cannot give you steps, because no exchange on my list carries DAI. Do not send money to a site that promises it without checking that the platform is on the CSA list of authorized crypto platforms.

What Is Dai (DAI) Used For?

Dai is a decentralised stablecoin that is soft-pegged to the US dollar. The Maker documentation describes it as unbiased and collateral-backed, available to anyone, anywhere. People use it as a dollar-denominated token on Ethereum: to hold value without the swings of other cryptocurrencies, to trade against other tokens, and to move dollars between apps without a bank. Because it is a US dollar token, its value in Canadian dollars still moves with the USD/CAD exchange rate.

In 2024, MakerDAO rebranded to Sky Ecosystem and launched a new stablecoin called USDS, described by Sky as the upgraded version of Dai. A converter contract lets holders switch between Dai and USDS, and the Sky site has an upgrade widget for it. Dai continues to exist, so you can still buy it, but it is worth knowing that the project's own direction has shifted toward USDS.

How Does Dai (DAI) Work?

New Dai is generated when users deposit collateral assets into Vaults on the Sky Protocol, which is how Dai enters circulation and how users get access to liquidity. Every Dai in circulation is meant to be backed by excess collateral, meaning the collateral is worth more than the Dai debt. All Dai transactions are publicly viewable on the Ethereum blockchain.

That is a very different design from a stablecoin backed by a company's bank balance. The peg is maintained by collateral rules and protocol governance rather than a single issuer promising redemptions.

What Are The Risks Of Holding Dai (DAI)?

  • Haircut risk: Sky's own risk disclosures say Dai holders could suffer a haircut, meaning they might not receive the full value of their Dai at the target price of 1 USD, because collateral can decline in value and vault owners may retrieve their excess collateral before Dai holders can claim what remains.
  • Peg risk: a soft peg is not a guarantee. Any stablecoin can trade away from its target.
  • Upgrade and freeze risk (USDS): Sky says USDS may eventually get a freeze function if its governance decides so. It is not implemented, but the token contract is proxy-upgradeable so it can be added by a governance vote.
  • Smart contract risk: the system is a set of on-chain contracts, and such code can have bugs.
  • Governance risk: the rules of the system are set by governance votes, and they can change.

What Is The Difference Between Dai And USDS?

Sky describes USDS as similar to Dai, a decentralised, collateral-backed token soft-pegged to the US dollar, with a converter contract that allows free conversions between the two. Holders who upgrade can use USDS to take part in the Sky Savings Rate and earn Sky token rewards without giving up control of their tokens. Staying in Dai is still possible. The practical question for a Canadian buyer is simply which of the two your exchange lists and which one the apps you want to use accept.

Which Wallets Support Dai (DAI)?

Dai is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum, so any wallet that supports Ethereum tokens can hold it. Ledger's support pages cover how to manage stablecoins including DAI with Ledger Wallet, and explain that there is no separate Dai app on the device: you use the Ethereum app, because Dai is an ERC-20 token. Ledger also notes that you need ETH in the same account to pay network fees when you send ERC-20 tokens.

How Do You Move Dai (DAI) From An Exchange To A Wallet?

  1. Set up an Ethereum-compatible wallet and write down your recovery phrase offline.
  2. Copy your Ethereum address from the receive screen.
  3. On the exchange, withdraw DAI and choose the Ethereum network unless your wallet clearly supports another network the exchange offers.
  4. Make sure you hold some ETH in the wallet, since sending ERC-20 tokens later requires ETH for fees.
  5. Send a small test amount first, wait for it to arrive, then send the rest.

What Should You Check Before Buying Dai (DAI)?

  • The ticker and network. Many tokens share names or tickers with copies, and the same coin can exist on more than one network. Confirm both before you pay.
  • The listing itself. Open the asset page on the exchange and confirm that DAI is tradable against Canadian dollars, or that you will need to buy another coin first and swap.
  • The all-in price. Compare the quote on the order screen with the exchange's fee schedule. A spread is part of the cost, even when the fee line says zero.
  • Withdrawal rules. Some platforms set minimums, fees or hold periods on withdrawals to your own wallet, so read them before you deposit a large amount.
  • Your records. Save the date, amount and CAD value of every purchase. You will need them at tax time.

How Do You Store Dai (DAI)?

For short-term trading, leaving DAI on a registered exchange is fine. For long-term holding, move it to a secure crypto wallet. Exchanges can get hacked, and I have seen it go south. A hardware wallet like Ledger, or a software wallet that supports DAI, keeps it safer. Check the wallet's asset list and network before you send anything, and stash that seed phrase somewhere secure (not your phone!).

How Do You Sell Dai (DAI) In Canada?

To sell, go to the exchange where you hold it. If your coins are in a wallet, send them back to the exchange first, then place a sell order. You can swap DAI for another cryptocurrency or sell it for Canadian dollars if the platform offers that, then withdraw to your bank account. My guide on how to sell or cash out crypto in Canada has the full steps.

Is Dai (DAI) A Good Investment For Canadians?

DAI’s stability is handy, but crypto’s got risks, only dive in if it fits your plan. Nobody can tell you where the price goes next, and I do not make predictions. If you buy, size the position so a drop does not hurt, and remember that smaller tokens can be thin to trade, which widens the spread when you sell.

Do You Pay Tax When You Buy Dai (DAI) In Canada?

Buying DAI with Canadian dollars is not itself a taxable event. Selling it, swapping it for another coin or spending it can be. The CRA says that, depending on your activities, you may realize business income (or loss) or a capital gain (or loss), and the two are reported differently. Record the date and CAD value of every buy, sale and swap. See my crypto taxation guide and how to report your crypto taxes.

What Changed For Buying Dai (DAI) In Canada In October 2026?

  • Kraken republished its fee schedule, with Pro spot starting at 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker.
  • Robinhood closed its WonderFi acquisition, and Coinsquare customers are being moved in phases to the Robinhood app.
