Hut 8 Corp. is a Canadian-founded bitcoin miner that now runs as an energy and data-center business headquartered in Miami, with shares listed on both the TSX and Nasdaq under the ticker HUT. Canadians buy it like any other stock, through a brokerage account, either on the TSX or on Nasdaq. It is a company share, not bitcoin, so what you own depends on Hut 8's business, not on the coin alone.

  • Where it trades: Nasdaq (HUT) and the TSX (HUT)
  • What it does: power assets, digital infrastructure and compute for AI and bitcoin mining
  • How to buy: any Canadian brokerage that offers TSX or Nasdaq trading, in a TFSA, RRSP or taxable account
  • If you only want bitcoin: an ETF or an exchange is more direct (see below)

People search “Hut 8 stock” looking for a price. I do not quote prices on this site because they date within minutes, and the finance sites do it better. What they rarely do is explain the thing you are actually buying and how it fits a Canadian account. That is this page. It is an explainer, not a recommendation to buy.

What Does Hut 8 Do?

Hut 8 started in 2017 as a Toronto bitcoin miner. It began trading on the TSX in 2019 and on Nasdaq in 2021, bought a portfolio of data centres in 2022, and merged with U.S. Bitcoin Corp. in November 2023 to form Hut 8 Corp. Today it describes itself as an energy infrastructure platform with three segments. Power acquires and manages interconnects, substations and generation. Digital Infrastructure designs and operates facilities for energy-intensive applications. Compute owns the businesses that run specialized hardware for AI and bitcoin mining.

The takeaway is that the stock is no longer a pure bitcoin bet. Part of its story is AI data-center demand: the company says its Beacon Point campus is fully commercialized with a $19.6 billion base-term contract value. Part is still bitcoin mining and its American Bitcoin brand.

Is Hut 8 Mining A Good Stock To Buy?

I cannot answer that for you and I will not pretend to. Here is what I would weigh. Is it exposure to bitcoin you want, or to power and AI infrastructure? Miners usually swing harder than the coin because their costs are fixed. A single share price also reflects debt, new capacity under construction and contract timing, none of which a bitcoin buyer carries. Read the latest quarterly report on Hut 8's investor page, not a forum summary, and decide how big a position you can afford to see fall by half.

How Many Bitcoins Does Hut 8 Own, And Who Are Its Competitors?

I am not going to quote a holdings number. Hut 8 reports bitcoin holdings in its quarterly filings, and its structure has changed with the American Bitcoin brand, so any figure I wrote here would be wrong by the next report. Check the filing. On competitors, the usual comparison set is the other listed miners such as Riot Platforms, MARA Holdings and CleanSpark, though Hut 8's data-center and power focus makes it less of a like-for-like.

How Do Canadians Buy Hut 8 Stock On The TSX Or Nasdaq?

  1. Open an account at a Canadian brokerage that offers TSX and Nasdaq trading. Wealthsimple lists $0 commission on stock and ETF trades in non-registered, TFSA and RRSP accounts.
  2. Decide which line to buy. The TSX line and the Nasdaq line are the same company. Check which currency each trades in with your broker before you place the order.
  3. Mind the currency. Wealthsimple charges a 1.5% FX fee on US-listed securities if you do not hold a USD account, which can outweigh a small commission saving.
  4. Place a limit order rather than a market order, so you set the price you will pay.
  5. Keep records for tax. Shares are taxed under normal capital gains or business income rules, not as crypto.

Listed shares on a designated stock exchange are generally eligible for registered accounts, but confirm with your broker before you buy. My Wealthsimple review covers its crypto side.

What Has Hut 8 Announced In 2026?

The company's own press release list shows where the business is heading. Almost everything is about AI data-center capacity and the financing behind it, not bitcoin mining.

Sep 28, 2026Announces a $1.07 billion senior secured revolving credit facility

Source: Hut 8 press release page, reviewed October 2, 2026.

The second-quarter release, dated August 4, 2026, describes a “power-first execution model” with 949 MW of contracted IT capacity and approximately $26.6 billion of expected aggregate base-term contract value. Those are company figures for contracted capacity, not profit. Read them next to the debt: the notes and revolving facility above are how this build-out is funded, which is the part a bitcoin buyer never has to think about.

Is Hut 8 Profitable, And Where Do You Check?

I will not quote a profit figure, because the answer changes every quarter and a number I printed would be stale by the next filing. The documents that settle it are free. Hut 8's investor page lists the 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, the earnings release and the earnings call presentation. Hut 8 reports in the US, so its filings are on the SEC's EDGAR system as well, and recent filings there still show the stock listed on both Nasdaq and the TSX under HUT. Start with the press release, then read the risk factors in the 10-Q. Pay attention to three lines: how much of revenue comes from bitcoin versus data-center leases, how much debt is due and when, and how much capital spending is still ahead.

Who Owns Hut 8, And What Is American Bitcoin?

Hut 8 is a public company, so ownership is spread across institutions, insiders and retail holders, and the proxy statement filed with the SEC lists the large holders. I will not guess at names. American Bitcoin is a separate Nasdaq-listed business that Hut 8 lists among its brands; it came to market in September 2025 through a merger with Gryphon Digital Mining, according to SEC filings summarized in search results. It matters for you because Hut 8's bitcoin exposure runs partly through that structure, which is another reason not to treat HUT as a simple bitcoin proxy.

What Does Owning Shares Mean For Canadian Taxes?

Shares are not crypto. When you sell, a gain or loss on shares is reported under the general rules for securities, not the CRA's crypto-asset guidance. That guidance covers crypto-assets, where the CRA says income is business income or a capital gain depending on the circumstances. Inside a TFSA the gain is not taxed, and in an RRSP it is taxed on withdrawal; both are features of the account, not of Hut 8. If you hold the US line in a Canadian account, check how your broker converts currency. Keep your trade confirmations; it is the same record-keeping habit I preach for crypto.

What Are The Risks Of Buying A Bitcoin Miner Stock?

What Attracts Buyers

  • Exposure to AI data-center demand as well as bitcoin
  • Listed on two major exchanges with regulated reporting
  • Contracted capacity and long lease terms disclosed by the company

What Worries Me

  • Heavy capital spending funded by debt
  • Mining revenue still swings with the bitcoin price
  • Announcements describe contract value, not profit

What Changed For Hut 8 Canadian Investors In October 2026?

  • Hut 8 reported first quarter results and, on its site, 205 MW operational at its Vega facility and projects of 500 MW (Beacon Point) and 330 MW (River Bend) in development.
