The best crypto and blockchain courses in Canada are short university continuing-education programs, plus a few free options. UBC runs a 55-hour Blockchain Innovation and Implementation micro-credential for $2,520. Dalhousie's online Certificate in Blockchain, Bitcoin and Cryptocurrency is three courses at about $383 each. BCIT offers a free four-hour Introduction to Cryptocurrency course. I could not find a recognized Canadian blockchain degree in my checks, so most credentials here are certificates.

  • Free and quick: BCIT MOOC-0310, about four hours
  • Mid-priced and self-paced: Dalhousie certificate, about $1,149 for three courses
  • For managers: UBC micro-credential, no coding needed

What Is The Best Free Crypto Course In Canada?

BCIT's Introduction to Cryptocurrency, course code MOOC-0310, is free, has no prerequisites and takes about four hours. It is independent study, you have 52 weeks from registration to finish, and a final self-assessment earns a Statement of Completion and a digital badge. BCIT says you will be able to discuss key concepts of cryptocurrency, understand blockchain and hashing, understand how cryptocurrency is created and discuss the types of wallets. There is no instructor or peer interaction. It is a good first step, and it will not teach you which exchange to use.

Which Canadian University Offers A Blockchain Certificate?

Dalhousie's online certificate has three courses: Introduction to Blockchain, Bitcoin and Cryptocurrency; Introduction to Blockchain Platforms, Cryptocurrencies and the Digital Economy; and The Future of Blockchain: Challenges, Opportunities and Use Cases. The fee is $383 per course, so the certificate is about $1,149, and the total is 108 hours. You start when you like and have six months for each course. Dalhousie says completion also qualifies you to sit the Global Blockchain Professional exam, with the exam cost included in the course fee.

UBC takes a different angle. Its micro-credential is aimed at leaders and professionals, such as product managers, executives and entrepreneurs, and teaches frameworks to evaluate blockchain projects, from cryptocurrencies and NFTs to DeFi and supply chain. It runs 100% online with real-time classes, or partly online with a two-week in-person Summer Institute. No coding is required.

Is There A Canadian Blockchain Degree?

I did not find a recognized stand-alone blockchain degree in the sources I checked. What I found are certificates, micro-credentials and postgraduate programs, such as George Brown's postgraduate Blockchain Development program. If a school advertises a degree, read what the credential actually is, how many credits it carries and whether it counts toward a recognized degree. Do not pay for a degree because of a marketing page.

What Do University Courses Skip That Canadians Need?

From the program descriptions I checked, none lists CSA registration, how to compare Canadian exchanges, FINTRAC identity rules or CRA reporting. That is the daily reality of owning crypto here. I built my own course for that gap, and the page for it lists modules on how crypto is regulated in Canada, FINTRAC and anti-money-laundering rules, regulated versus unregulated exchanges, custodial versus self-custody wallets, and how crypto is taxed. It costs $199 as listed on its page: see the OCryptoCanada course page. If you would rather self-study, the free pages on this site cover the same ground: how crypto is taxed, what CIRO regulates, the best exchanges in Canada and the best wallets.

How Should A Beginner Start Learning Crypto In Canada?

  1. Take the free BCIT course to learn the vocabulary.
  2. Open a regulated account and buy a small amount. I rank Coinbase first, and the 60-second quiz narrows the field.
  3. Learn the tax rules before your first sale. Keep records from day one.
  4. Move to self-custody once the amount matters.
  5. Pay for a certificate only if you need the credential for work.

What Does Each Dalhousie Course Cover?

  • Introduction to Blockchain, Bitcoin and Cryptocurrency: the starting course, covering how blockchains and coins work.
  • Introduction to Blockchain Platforms, Cryptocurrencies and the Digital Economy: platforms beyond Bitcoin and how they fit into the wider economy.
  • The Future of Blockchain: Challenges, Opportunities and Use Cases: where the technology might go and where it is already used.

Those are the titles from Dalhousie's continuing education listings. I have not taken any of these courses, and I will not pretend to review their teaching. What I can compare honestly is price and time.

Dalhousie Certificate$1,149 (3 x $383)108About $10.64
UBC Micro-Credential$2,52055About $45.82

My arithmetic on each provider's published fee and hours. Hours are as the provider states them, and UBC's includes live instruction.

Is A Crypto Certificate Worth Paying For?

Only if someone is going to ask for it. A certificate helps if you are a manager, analyst or developer who needs to show employers a structured credential, and Dalhousie's price per hour makes it the cheapest paid route here. It does little for a person who just wants to buy Bitcoin safely, because the skill you need is choosing a regulated platform, keeping tax records and storing coins securely, and none of the descriptions I read promise that. I would spend the first four hours on the free BCIT course and the next on reading the CRA's own cryptocurrency guide before paying for anything.

What Free Official Resources Should Every Canadian Read?

  • The CRA's cryptocurrency guide on canada.ca. It covers what counts as a taxable event, how to value crypto, record-keeping, mining and staking, and GST/HST.
  • The CSA's list of crypto platforms authorized to do business with Canadians. Check it before you deposit anywhere.
  • The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre's investment fraud page. It describes the patterns behind most crypto losses.

All three are free and more useful to a beginner than most paid courses. My own pages build on them: how crypto is taxed, common scams and what CIRO regulates.

How Do You Spot A Fake Crypto Course?

Be suspicious of any course that promises income, shows screenshots of profits, pushes you to a private chat or requires you to deposit money on a specific trading site. The CAFC's investment fraud guidance describes fake trading sites and guaranteed returns as the standard hooks. A real course names the institution, shows a fee and a syllabus and does not tell you where to trade. If a course ends with a referral link to an unregistered platform, you were the product.
