Cash App is not offered in Canada. Cash App's own help pages say it is available in the US and UK only, and that outside those countries features such as sending a P2P payment, adding funds and withdrawing funds do not work. Its terms of service require you to be a resident of the United States. Canadians who want the same things, sending money and buying bitcoin from a phone, have good local options: Interac e-Transfer for sending money, and Wealthsimple Crypto, Shakepay, Coinbase and Bull Bitcoin for bitcoin.
- Sending money to a friend: Interac e-Transfer through your bank, or KOHO's Interac e-Transfers
- Buying bitcoin in an app: Coinbase (my top pick), Wealthsimple Crypto or Shakepay
- Bitcoin only, to your own wallet: Bull Bitcoin
- Not an option: opening Cash App with a Canadian address
Cash App is a US app, and Canadians run into it because American friends, employers and online creators want to be paid through it. The search “Cash App Canada” comes up about 4,400 times a month, and almost everyone asking wants one of two answers: can I use it here, and what do I use instead. The first answer is no. The second depends on whether you need to move money or buy bitcoin, so I split it that way.
Does Cash App Work In Canada?
No. Cash App publishes help pages on international use, including one on coverage for Canada and Mexico, and the summary is consistent: the service is for the US and UK, and a Canadian resident cannot open a regular account. When you are outside a supported country, features like P2P payments, adding funds and withdrawing funds are unavailable. Its card can be used abroad with a 3% international use fee, but that is for a US cardholder travelling, not for a Canadian signing up. Cash App Afterpay is offered to Canadian shoppers buying from US merchants, which is a separate product from the app.
The terms of service close the loop. They state: “You must be a resident of the United States, at least 18 years and the age of majority in your State of residence.” They mention no Canadian residency or support. I fetched the terms myself; the Cash App help pages were harder to load, so for those I rely on the pages as summarized in search results and say so in my notes.
Can You Use A US Address Or A US Friend's Account?
I do not recommend either. A US address that is not yours breaks the terms, and a frozen balance would leave you with no Canadian regulator to call. Using someone else's account is worse. If you need to receive money from an American, ask them to send an e-transfer-style payment through a service that works across the border, or use a Canadian bank's international transfer. For bitcoin, there is no reason to touch Cash App at all.

What Is The Best Way To Send Money In Canada?
For ordinary person-to-person payments, Interac e-Transfer is the default. Your bank runs it, it works between Canadian bank accounts, and it is how every crypto platform I rank takes deposits. I did not verify a bank fee schedule, so check yours. KOHO is the closest app to what Cash App users picture: a Canadian prepaid Mastercard that supports Interac e-Transfers, with paid plans that add cash back and interest. It also lists cryptocurrency access, though I have not tested it and do not rate its crypto side. If your goal is only to pay people, you do not need a crypto platform.
Can You Buy Bitcoin In An App Like Cash App In Canada?
Yes, and in a registered one. Coinbase is my number one pick: it is a CSA Restricted Dealer in all provinces and territories, with free Interac e-Transfer and EFT deposits. Wealthsimple Crypto suits people who already bank with Wealthsimple, and Shakepay is a Montreal firm that is a CIRO investment dealer and charges no commission, with its cost built into a spread of 0.5% to 2.0%. If you want bitcoin only, sent to your own wallet, Bull Bitcoin has no processing fee and is non-custodial. Read the Coinbase review, Wealthsimple review, Shakepay review and Bull Bitcoin review.
How Do You Buy Bitcoin On Coinbase In Canada Step By Step?
- Download Coinbase or go to coinbase.com/en-ca and create an account with the email you will keep long term. Choose a strong password and turn on two-factor authentication straight away.
- Verify your identity. Canadian rules require ID, so have a government-issued photo ID ready.
- Add Canadian dollars. Interac e-Transfer and EFT are free at Coinbase. A bank transfer is credited instantly but may carry a hold before you can send or withdraw; Interac e-Transfer is listed for adding and cashing out cash, so check which method lets you buy directly.
- Open the Buy screen, choose Bitcoin and enter an amount. Read the order preview: Coinbase may charge a fee of up to 1.875%, which varies by payment method, plus a spread.
- Confirm the buy. For anything you plan to hold for years, withdraw to a wallet you control. See my wallet guide.
- Keep your records. The CRA expects the date, units and Canadian dollar value of every transaction, for at least six years.
Visit Coinbase Coinbase's banner currently advertises a getting-started offer of up to CA$200, but I could not verify its terms, so I do not promise it.
What Is The Safest Way To Buy Bitcoin If You Are New?
Use a CSA-registered platform, fund by Interac e-Transfer, and start with an amount you can afford to see fall. A registered platform gives you a Canadian entity, a regulator and written rules on custody. Cash held at a CIPF member is covered up to a limit; crypto is not covered on any platform. My full ranking shows scores, and the quiz picks one for you in a minute. If someone you met online is pushing you to open a particular app, read my scam guide first.
What Changed For Canadians Looking For Bitcoin Apps In October 2026?
- Wealthsimple updated its crypto fee schedule: flat 0.5% plus a spread, Active Trader tiers down to 0%, and a CAD 1 surcharge under CAD 100.
- Robinhood closed its WonderFi acquisition, so Coinsquare and Bitbuy customers are being moved to the Robinhood app.
- Newton was admitted to CIRO membership as an investment dealer.
- Shakepay was admitted to CIRO membership as an investment dealer.
