Wealthsimple charges a flat 0.5% plus a spread. MEXC lists a 0% maker fee and a coin menu eight times as long. One lets Canadians in, the other does not, and the fee gap is smaller in practice than it looks.

Active Trader status (50 eligible trades in a calendar month) removes the spread. A CAD 1 surcharge applies to orders under CAD 100 (not counted here). MEXC: Spot base maker 0% and taker 0.05% (0.04% with 20% MX discount) per mexc.com/fee, checked 2026-10-01; some special pairs higher. Ranges reflect each platform’s published band, not a single quote. Bank and network fees are not included.

What Do Wealthsimple Crypto And MEXC Offer Beyond Buying And Selling?

Wealthsimple Crypto Only

  • Staking: ETH, SOL, ADA and DOT, advertised as up to 5% a year. Wealthsimple keeps 30% of rewards (15% for Generation) and validators take their own commission (ETH about 5%).
  • Crypto swaps: Swap one eligible coin for another in one trade with one fee instead of two.
  • Recurring buys and price-target orders: Schedule automatic purchases or set a price at which an order executes. Recurring orders do not count toward Active Trader status.
  • DEX trading: On-chain token access with CAD 0 network fees, per Wealthsimple, through the Crypto Web3 Wallet.
  • Active Trader status: Earned with 50 or more eligible trades in a calendar month, valid for that month and the next. Cuts the crypto fee to 0.5% to 0% with a 0% spread, plus priority phone and email support.

MEXC Only

  • Futures: Futures maker fee 0%. Not available to Canadians because Canada is a prohibited jurisdiction.

What Happens To Your Money If Wealthsimple Crypto Or MEXC Fails?

Wealthsimple Crypto: Wealthsimple Investments Inc. is a CIRO dealer member, so cash in the account is covered by CIPF, but crypto is explicitly not covered by CIPF, CDIC or any investor protection scheme. Wealthsimple says crypto is held in trust and would remain yours in an insolvency, and that custodial partners each carry over CAD 75M of insurance, but that cover is held by the partners and the custodians are not named on the product page. No proof of reserves is published. Hot wallet losses are the part covered by the Coincover recovery arrangement.

MEXC: MEXC is not registered with the CSA, is not a CIRO member and has no FINTRAC MSB registration, so no Canadian regulator oversees it. It is not on the CSA banned list either, but it prohibits Canada in its own terms, so an account opened from Canada can be frozen with funds inside. CIPF never covers crypto. Insurance and proof of reserves were not verified. If the exchange fails or is hacked, a Canadian has no regulator to turn to.

How Are Wealthsimple Crypto And MEXC Treated For Tax In Canada?

Wealthsimple Crypto: Selling, swapping one coin for another and staking rewards are taxable; withdrawing crypto to your own wallet is not a disposition. Wealthsimple provides a Realized Gains and Losses report as PDF or CSV and a Crypto Transaction Summary CSV, and says there is no official tax slip for crypto.

MEXC: Spot sales and crypto-to-crypto trades are dispositions for CRA purposes. No tax export was verified, so rebuild records from trade history.

Selling, swapping or spending crypto is a disposition for the CRA on any platform. This is not tax advice: see my guide to crypto taxes in Canada.

Which Should You Choose, Wealthsimple Crypto Or MEXC?

Choose Wealthsimple Crypto If

  • You already hold stocks or cash at Wealthsimple and want crypto in the same app.
  • You value a CIRO-regulated dealer and a simple flat fee over the lowest possible cost.
  • You trade 50 or more times a month and can qualify for Active Trader pricing.

Choose MEXC If

  • You want a huge altcoin list: MEXC bars Canada, so compare registered Canadian dealers instead.

MEXC: Offshore Status

Offshore Not registered with the Canadian Securities Administrators, and its User Agreement (updated 29 May 2025) names Canada as a prohibited jurisdiction. No Canadian investor protection applies. On paper it suits altcoin hunters, but a Canadian cannot open an account under its own terms.

Is Wealthsimple Crypto Or MEXC Better For Canadians In 2026?

Wealthsimple Crypto, since Canadians can use it. It is fourth in my ranking at 8.4 and MEXC is ninth at 7.0. MEXC's User Agreement, updated 29 May 2025, names Canada as a prohibited jurisdiction, so the comparison ends before the fee table starts. For the long version of the Wealthsimple case, see my Wealthsimple Crypto review.

Is A Flat 0.5% Fee Really Worse Than 0.05%?

On the headline numbers, yes, by a factor of ten. MEXC charges 0% maker and 0.05% taker on spot, or 0.04% with its MX discount. Wealthsimple charges a flat 0.5% on every order, plus a spread on market orders. On CAD 1,000 that is between nothing and about 50 cents at MEXC against CAD 5 plus spread at Wealthsimple.

The spread is the part to watch. Wealthsimple's own fee example shows a CAD 5,000 buy costing 1.50% all in. That is CAD 75, or CAD 15 on a CAD 1,000 buy at the same rate, though the spread moves with market conditions. Orders under CAD 100 also pay a CAD 1 surcharge, which dominates a small buy. Active Trader status, with 50 or more eligible trades a month, removes the spread and drops the fee.

I would not trade 50 times a month for a lower fee. For a buy-and-hold investor who buys a few times a year, 1.5% is the number to compare against other registered dealers, and the ranking page does that.

Which Costs Less When You Actually Trade?

MEXC, on paper, and by a long way. But there is no CAD funding route verified at MEXC, so a Canadian would need another path in. Wealthsimple takes free Interac e-Transfer up to CAD 10,000 per transfer, or your bank's cap, and instant deposits up to CAD 50,000 on the Core tier. No CAD withdrawal fee appears on its crypto fee schedule.

Which Is Safer For Canadians?

Wealthsimple Investments Inc. is a CIRO dealer member. The CSA amended its crypto decision on 22 December 2025, and its FINTRAC MSB registration M23997457 runs to 3 March 2028. CIPF covers cash in the account and never crypto. Wealthsimple says crypto is held in trust and would remain yours in an insolvency, with most of it in cold storage with partners that each carry over CAD 75M of insurance. Hot wallet losses fall under a Coincover arrangement. No proof of reserves is published.

MEXC has no CSA decision, no CIRO membership and no FINTRAC match. Custody, insurance and proof of reserves were not verified. An account opened from Canada can be frozen with funds inside.

Does A Bigger Coin List Matter If You Cannot Use It?

Wealthsimple lists 170+ coins to trade and 120 for deposit and withdrawal, with no USDT. MEXC lists 1,425 spot base assets, counted on its public API on 1 October 2026. If you chase small-cap altcoins, the MEXC number is attractive, and that is the one real draw. But it is a draw you cannot act on from Canada without breaching its terms.

Who Should Choose Wealthsimple Crypto, And Who Should Choose MEXC?

Choose Wealthsimple if you already hold stocks or cash there and want crypto in the same app, you value a CIRO dealer over the lowest possible cost, or you can qualify for Active Trader. Open a Wealthsimple account if that describes you. Choose MEXC only if you live outside Canada. For Canadians, a lower fee on paper does not outweigh a terms-of-service bar.

  • : The CSA amended its decision for Wealthsimple Investments Inc.
  • : Wealthsimple updated its crypto fee schedule: 0.5% flat plus spread, Active Trader tiers to 0%, and a CAD 1 small-order surcharge.
