What Are The Key Differences Between Wealthsimple Crypto And Crypto.com?
Wealthsimple Crypto Vs Crypto.com: Side By Side
Wealthsimple Crypto
Crypto.com
Description
Wealthsimple is a Canadian trading platform that lets you buy crypto in CAD alongside your stocks, cash and other accounts in one app. Crypto is offered by Wealthsimple Investments Inc., a CIRO dealer member, and sits in a non-registered account only, so it cannot be held in a TFSA or RRSP.
Crypto.com is one of the world's largest crypto platforms and one of the few global exchanges registered to operate in Canada, through Foris DAX CAN ULC as a restricted dealer. It offers its own coin (CRO), staking, a Visa prepaid crypto card with cashback, and an all-in-one app.
Coins
BTC, ETH, SOL and 170+ other coins to trade, e.g. Cardano, Polkadot and Dogecoin, plus stablecoins such as USDC. USDT is not available, as with the other regulated Canadian platforms.
400+ on its global exchange, though the list for Canadians is smaller because registered platforms must restrict certain assets. USDT has not been available to Canadians since 2023-01-31. The exact Canadian app list is not published.
Fees
A flat 0.5% trading fee on every order plus a spread on market orders (the fee schedule's own example is 0.50% + 1.00% spread = 1.50%) | Active Trader status (50 eligible trades in a month) swaps the spread for 0%, with the fee 0.5% falling to 0% above CAD 15M of 30-day volume | CAD 1 surcharge on any order under CAD 100 | Buying USDC with CAD or CADD with CAD carries no fee or spread | Crypto swaps pay one fee | Staking fee 30% of rewards (15% Generation) | USD trades add a 1.5% FX fee unless you hold a USD account
The Canadian app fee schedule is not published. Canada marketing says maker and taker fees from 0.08% and 0.18%; the global Exchange starts at 0.25% maker and 0.50% taker (Level 1). App purchases carry a spread. CAD deposits by Interac e-Transfer are free.
Pros
170+ cryptocurrencies in the same app as your stocks and cash account
CIRO-regulated investment dealer, with crypto held in trust
Staking on ETH, SOL, ADA and DOT with automatic reward deposits
Crypto withdrawals to your own wallet, with USDC on Ethereum, Base or Solana and ETH on Base
Crypto-to-crypto swaps for a single fee
Recurring buys and limit and price-target orders
No account minimum and no fee on CAD deposits via Interac e-Transfer
A downloadable Realized Gains and Losses report for your tax return
One of only two major global exchanges registered as a restricted dealer in Canada
Wide range of coins
Suitable for beginners and pro traders
Interac e-Transfer with free deposits
Staking available (assets and rates not verified)
Cons
The 0.5% fee is a flat add-on to a spread that is not published in advance, so total cost is higher than it looks
The CAD 1 surcharge dominates small orders under CAD 100
Staking fee takes 30% of rewards for Core and Premium
No USDT, no advanced trading tools, margin or futures
A 5 business day hold on new deposits before you can withdraw crypto
Crypto itself is not covered by CIPF (only cash is)
Only CAD is accepted for the Canadian CAD Account, no credit or debit card for CAD funding verified
Coin selection in Canada is smaller than the global exchange
App pricing includes a spread on top of quoted fees
USDT delisted for Canadians, and no margin or leverage under restricted dealer conditions
Some altcoins carry annual purchase limits outside BC, AB, MB and QC (see Account Limits)
Customer service is a common complaint, chat-based and often slow (Oleg's original note, not re-tested)
Security
Most coins sit in offline cold storage with regulated custodial partners that each carry over CAD 75M of insurance coverage, the remainder in hot wallets with Coincover recovery cover. Coins are held in trust. 2FA and mandatory identity verification, with a selfie check before external crypto withdrawals.
Crypto.com describes cold storage and security certifications, but a Canadian page with cold storage share, insurance amount or proof of reserves was not found. Treat those claims as unverified. Crypto.com's own FAQ says nothing about CIPF covering crypto, and CIPF never covers crypto.
Methods To Buy
Interac e-Transfer (instant deposits up to CAD 50,000 for Core, CAD 250,000 for Premium and Generation) | Linked bank account | Crypto deposits from external wallets
Interac e-Transfer (CAD Account), crypto deposits. Cards and other methods were not verified for Canada.

CAD Account deposits CAD 20 to 25,000 each, balance cap CAD 100,000. As a restricted dealer, Crypto.com applies regulator-set net purchase limits on non-major assets;

Wealthsimple Crypto: Flat 0.5% fee per order. The high end adds the 1.00% spread used in Wealthsimple's own CAD 5,000 example (spread varies with market conditions) from the fee schedule dated 2026-09-24. Active Trader status (50 eligible trades in a calendar month) removes the spread. A CAD 1 surcharge applies to orders under CAD 100 (not counted here). Crypto.com: Canadian app fee schedule and spread not published on a fetched page (2026-10-03). Do not compute an all-in cost. Ranges reflect each platform’s published band, not a single quote. Bank and network fees are not included.
What Do Wealthsimple Crypto And Crypto.com Offer Beyond Buying And Selling?
Wealthsimple Crypto Only
Staking: ETH, SOL, ADA and DOT, advertised as up to 5% a year. Wealthsimple keeps 30% of rewards (15% for Generation) and validators take their own commission (ETH about 5%).
Crypto swaps: Swap one eligible coin for another in one trade with one fee instead of two.
Recurring buys and price-target orders: Schedule automatic purchases or set a price at which an order executes. Recurring orders do not count toward Active Trader status.
DEX trading: On-chain token access with CAD 0 network fees, per Wealthsimple, through the Crypto Web3 Wallet.
Active Trader status: Earned with 50 or more eligible trades in a calendar month, valid for that month and the next. Cuts the crypto fee to 0.5% to 0% with a 0% spread, plus priority phone and email support.
Crypto.com Only
CAD Account: Hold CAD, deposit by Interac, balance cap CAD 100,000 (higher for Prime). Sell crypto to CAD and withdraw to your bank.
Welcome Bonus: Canada keeps the legacy milestone-based Welcome Bonus after KYC; the amount was not verified.
What Happens To Your Money If Wealthsimple Crypto Or Crypto.com Fails?
Wealthsimple Crypto: Wealthsimple Investments Inc. is a CIRO dealer member, so cash in the account is covered by CIPF, but crypto is explicitly not covered by CIPF, CDIC or any investor protection scheme. Wealthsimple says crypto is held in trust and would remain yours in an insolvency, and that custodial partners each carry over CAD 75M of insurance, but that cover is held by the partners and the custodians are not named on the product page. No proof of reserves is published. Hot wallet losses are the part covered by the Coincover recovery arrangement.
Crypto.com:Crypto.com in Canada is a restricted dealer under the CSA, so it must hold client assets with conditions set by regulators, but CIPF never covers crypto. A third-party insurance figure, cold storage share and proof of reserves were not found on a Canadian page, so none can be relied on here. Coins are held by the company until you withdraw. If the company failed or was hacked, you would be an unsecured claimant for anything not recovered, and withdrawals could be paused.
How Are Wealthsimple Crypto And Crypto.com Treated For Tax In Canada?
Wealthsimple Crypto: Selling, swapping one coin for another and staking rewards are taxable; withdrawing crypto to your own wallet is not a disposition. Wealthsimple provides a Realized Gains and Losses report as PDF or CSV and a Crypto Transaction Summary CSV, and says there is no official tax slip for crypto.
Crypto.com: Buying with CAD is not a disposition. Selling for CAD, swapping one coin for another and spending crypto are dispositions you report to the CRA. Export formats and any CRA-ready report were not verified.
Selling, swapping or spending crypto is a disposition for the CRA on any platform. This is not tax advice: see my guide to crypto taxes in Canada.
Which Should You Choose, Wealthsimple Crypto Or Crypto.com?
Choose Wealthsimple Crypto If
You already hold stocks or cash at Wealthsimple and want crypto in the same app.
You value a CIRO-regulated dealer and a simple flat fee over the lowest possible cost.
You trade 50 or more times a month and can qualify for Active Trader pricing.
Choose Crypto.com If
You want a mainstream app with a wide coin list and are fine with spread-based pricing
You are not buying on fee transparency alone, since the Canadian fee schedule is not published
Wealthsimple Crypto is fourth on my 2026 ranking at 8.4, and Crypto.com is one of the extras I list after the ranked ten. Both are on the CSA list and both serve Canadians directly. Crypto.com's Canadian fee and custody details are the part that could not be verified, so this page says so rather than guessing.

Wealthsimple Crypto charges a flat 0.5% fee on every order, and on market orders a spread goes on top. Its own fee schedule gives the example of a 0.50% fee plus a 1.00% spread, which comes to 1.50% all in. Limit orders carry no spread. Any order under CAD 100 picks up a CAD 1 surcharge. Active Trader status changes the model: the fee is 0.5% under CAD 10,000 of 30-day volume, 0.35% from there, and keeps stepping down to 0% above CAD 15 million, with the spread at 0% throughout. The schedule was last updated on September 24, 2026.
Crypto.com's Canadian app fee schedule could not be retrieved. Its Canadian marketing says maker and taker fees are as low as 0.08% and 0.18%, but that is a best-case headline rather than what a new user pays. For reference, the global Crypto.com Exchange starts at 0.250% maker and 0.500% taker at Level 1, and that is not the Canadian app.
Wealthsimple's schedule is public and specific: 0.5% plus a spread on market orders, an example total of 1.50%, and Active Trader tiers falling to 0%. Crypto.com's Canadian app schedule could not be retrieved, and its Canadian marketing headline of 0.08% maker and 0.18% taker is a best-case figure. Until you see the quote in the app, treat that headline as a ceiling on how good it gets, not a typical price.
