The Trezor Safe 5 is a USD 129 touchscreen wallet with an EAL6+ chip and open code; the Ledger Nano X is a USD 99 Bluetooth classic with a small button-driven screen. The honest difference: Safe 5 is better on a computer, Nano X is better on a phone.
Trezor Safe 5 Vs Ledger Nano X: Which Is Better For Canadians?
For most Canadians, the Trezor Safe 5 is the better pick.
What Happens If You Lose Your Trezor Safe 5 Or Ledger Nano X?
Trezor Safe 5: Your coins are recorded on the blockchain, not stored inside the device. Recovery depends on the backup: 12-, 20- and 24-word backup; Advanced multi-share backup. Keep that backup offline and never type it into a website or app. 6 security issues are on record for the maker, the latest on 2026-09-09 (Brevo newsletter provider breach, phishing from Trezor's address).
Ledger Nano X: Your coins are recorded on the blockchain, not stored inside the device. Recovery depends on the backup: recovery sheets; optional Ledger Recover. Keep that backup offline and never type it into a website or app. 7 security issues are on record for the maker, the latest on 2026-08-27 (Security Bulletins 023, 024, 025: signing-review bypasses).

Which Is More Secure, Trezor Safe 5 Or Ledger Nano X?
The chip tells part of the story. The Safe 5 has an EAL6+ secure element; the Nano X has a CC EAL5+ secure element, one level lower on the Common Criteria scale. The Nano X is also the older design, now grouped in Ledger's "Nano Classics" with the Nano S Plus, while the Nano Gen5 sits above it in the lineup. That does not make it unsafe. It does mean you are buying an older generation.
The screen is the other security difference, because you verify what you sign on the device. The Safe 5 has a 1.54 inch colour touchscreen at 240 x 240. The Nano X has a 1.1 inch monochrome OLED at 128 x 64 and two buttons, described as a small screen with a multi-step process. Long addresses and contract data are simply harder to read on it.
On openness, Trezor lists open-source security and public code. Ledger's pages do not claim open source for the Nano X. On incident history, a few relevant ones: Ledger's December 2023 Connect Kit attack drained dApp users while no hardware wallet or seed was compromised; the 2020 customer data leak led to phishing and physical-threat letters; Security Bulletin 021 in January 2025 covered a firmware-update parameter that could brick a Nano X on older firmware (fixed in Nano X 2.4.2, with Ledger saying funds were never at risk). Trezor's list includes the 2024 support portal breach and 2026 shipping and newsletter incidents, none touching devices or keys (Ledger Bulletin 021).
Which Is Easier To Use?
The Nano X's headline feature is Bluetooth: pair it to the Ledger Wallet app on Android 10+ or iOS 15+ and sign from your phone. It lasts up to 5 hours of normal use, weighs 34 g and is 72 x 18.6 x 11.7 mm, so it fits in a coin pocket. It uses a USB-A to USB-C cable for the computer.
The Safe 5 is a computer-first device. USB-C to USB-C, no Bluetooth, no battery, and Trezor Suite on Android, Mac, Windows and Linux with only limited iOS compatibility. If you sign from an iPhone, the Nano X wins and the Safe 5 does not work well. If you are on a laptop, the Safe 5's touchscreen is much easier than two buttons.
Which Supports More Coins?
Trezor lists thousands of coins and tokens and third-party wallet apps. The Nano X shows 500+ coins directly in Ledger Wallet and thousands more via 50+ compatible third-party wallets. Can Trezor hold XRP? The Trezor page I fetched does not name it; check Suite, and I keep XRP on my own Trezor and Tangem setup. Ledger lists XRP in its Flex page and the same Ledger Wallet app serves the Nano X.
Which Costs Less In Canada?
The Nano X is USD 99, the cheaper of the two; the Safe 5 is USD 129. Ledger's Canadian storefront shows CA$ pricing for the family, though I did not capture the Nano X's CA$ price, and resellers include Canada Computers, Best Buy Canada and Amazon Canada. Trezor lists Amazon Canada as authorised. Courier duty for a parcel from the US or Mexico: CAD 40 or less is duty and tax free, CAD 40 to 150 pays tax only, above CAD 150 duties and taxes apply.

How Do They Work With Canadian Exchanges?
Both are plain addresses. Coinbase has "Sending to myself". Kraken has a Travel Rule pop-up above CAD 1,000. NDAX asks "Who are you sending to?" and remembers details for each address. FINTRAC's rule has applied since June 1, 2021. The CRA says moving crypto between wallets you own is not a disposition.
Is Trezor Better Than Ledger?
Here, on hardware and openness, yes: the Safe 5 has the stronger chip class, a real touchscreen and public code. The Nano X wins on cost, size and phone use. The disadvantages of Trezor in this match-up are no Bluetooth and limited iOS. I rank the Trezor Safe 7 number 1 and the Ledger Flex number 3, so neither of these two models is on my list, but the Safe 5 has its own review.
Which Should You Choose?
Choose the Nano X if your phone is the main device and your budget is tight. Choose the Safe 5 if you sign on a computer and want the better screen and open code. If you can stretch, look at the Trezor Safe 5 Vs Ledger Flex match-up instead, and see the best crypto wallets in Canada.
