Which Is More Secure, Trezor Safe 5 Or Ledger Flex?

Start with what you can check. The Safe 5 has one certified EAL6+ secure element and open-source firmware: Trezor lists "open-source security" and the public code is there to read. The Ledger Flex has an ST33K1M5 EAL6+ secure element too, but Ledger OS is not fully open source and Ledger's own pages do not claim otherwise. Same chip class, different transparency. Both offer a passphrase on top of the backup, though Ledger's passphrase line was not on the page I fetched. Trezor's Safe 5 adds 12, 20 and 24 word backups and an advanced multi-share backup.

Both makers have a public list of problems. For Trezor Safe 5 specifically, the notable one is a negative: the March 2025 Ledger Donjon bypass of Safe 3 supply-chain countermeasures did not affect the Safe 5, and the June 2026 TROPIC01 laser attack is on the Safe 7's chip, not this one. Trezor's own customer-data episodes are real though: a January 2024 support portal breach, the August 2026 ShipMonk breach (names, addresses, phone and email for roughly 80,689 customers on Trezor's September 2 count) and a September 2026 Brevo newsletter incident. No devices or keys were touched in any of them (Trezor's ShipMonk notice). Ledger has a 2020 customer-data leak, the 2023 Connect Kit attack on dApp users, and signing-review bulletins 023 to 025 on August 27, 2026.

So, what are the disadvantages of Trezor? On the Safe 5: no Bluetooth, no battery, and only limited iOS compatibility. On the brand: customer-data incidents that make phishing a constant risk, and a 2020 Kraken Security Labs seed extraction on older Model One and Model T devices without a passphrase. Use a passphrase and never type your backup anywhere.

Which Is Easier To Use?

The Safe 5 has a 1.54 inch colour touchscreen (240 x 240) with haptic feedback and Gorilla Glass 3, in a USB-C to USB-C cable setup. Trezor Suite runs on Android, Mac, Windows and Linux; iOS is limited. That matters: if you plan to manage coins from an iPhone, the Safe 5 is the wrong Trezor, and the Safe 7 has full iOS compatibility.

The Flex is the phone-friendly device: Bluetooth 5.2, NFC and USB-C, a 2.8 inch E Ink screen that is easy on the eyes, and a Ledger Wallet app for iOS, Android and desktop. On paper the Flex is built around a phone, and the Safe 5 around a computer.

Which Supports More Coins?

Trezor says "1000s of coins and tokens" through Suite and 30+ third-party apps in the family. Ledger lists 500+ coins directly in its app, with Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, XRP and stablecoins named, and thousands more through third parties. Can XRP be stored on Trezor? The product pages I fetched do not name it, so check Trezor Suite; I keep XRP on my own Trezor and Tangem setup. For the Flex, XRP is named in writing.

Which Costs Less In Canada?

The Safe 5 is half the price: USD 129 against USD 249 (CA$369 on Ledger's Canadian storefront) for the Flex. Trezor does not state Canadian shipping on the pages I fetched, but Amazon Canada is a listed authorised reseller, and Trezor says it serves any country in the checkout drop-down. Ledger lists Canada Computers, Best Buy Canada and Amazon Canada. For duty, the CBSA's courier rule from outside the US and Mexico is CAD 20 duty and tax free; the rate for a wallet is unknown to me.

How Do They Work With Canadian Exchanges?

Both are ordinary addresses. Coinbase offers "Sending to myself" for self-custody wallets. Kraken shows a Travel Rule pop-up above CAD 1,000 and does not allow sends to a third party. Newton requires the address to be saved and MFA-verified first. FINTRAC's travel rule has applied since June 1, 2021.
