The Trezor Model One was the wallet that made Trezor famous, and it is now discontinued. The Safe 3 is its direct successor at USD 59, with a certified secure element the Model One never had. There is no good reason to hunt for a Model One today. Buy the Safe 3, or step up to the Safe 5.
Trezor Safe 3 Vs Trezor Model One: Which Is Better For Canadians?
Neither the Trezor Safe 3 nor the Trezor Model One is on my top 7 list, so the choice comes down to the features below. My #1 wallet pick overall is the Trezor Safe 7 (9.6/10).
What Happens If You Lose Your Trezor Safe 3 Or Trezor Model One?
Trezor Safe 3: Your coins are recorded on the blockchain, not stored inside the device. Recovery depends on the backup: 12-, 20- and 24-word backup; Advanced multi-share backup; 2 x 20-word backup cards in the box. Keep that backup offline and never type it into a website or app. 6 security issues are on record for the maker, the latest on 2026-09-09 (Brevo newsletter provider breach, phishing from Trezor's address).
Trezor Model One: Your coins are recorded on the blockchain, not stored inside the device. Recovery depends on the backup: 24-word backup; 12-word backup requires an advanced setup; 2 wallet backup cards. Keep that backup offline and never type it into a website or app. 6 security issues are on record for the maker, the latest on 2026-09-09 (Brevo newsletter provider breach, phishing from Trezor's address).

Which Is More Secure, Safe 3 Or Model One?
The Safe 3 adds the single biggest upgrade: a certified EAL6+ secure element. Trezor's Model One page does not state a secure element, and the Safe 3 page is the one describing the chip. That matters because of the Model One's best-known weakness. In January 2020 Kraken Security Labs showed that with physical access and a voltage glitch on the microcontroller, the encrypted seed could be extracted in about 15 minutes. Devices without a passphrase were at risk. There was no remote danger (Kraken report). The fix on the user side is a passphrase, and that works on both models.
The Safe 3 has had its own disclosure. In March 2025 Ledger Donjon reused a known voltage-glitch attack on the Safe 3's microcontroller to bypass some supply-chain countermeasures. It matters mainly for a device tampered with before reaching you, and Trezor says no action is needed for official purchases. Trezor also said the Safe 5, Model One and Model T were not affected (The Block). That is another reason to buy only from Trezor or an authorised reseller.
Which Is Easier To Use?
They feel similar. Both have a small OLED screen and a two-button interface. The Safe 3's display is 0.96 inch monochrome at 128 x 64 pixels. Both connect over USB, and the Safe 3 includes a USB-C to USB-C cable. The Safe 3 works with Trezor Suite on desktop and Android, with limited iOS compatibility; I did not find a Suite compatibility list on the Model One page. Backup is where the Safe 3 improves things: it offers 12-, 20- and 24-word backups plus Advanced multi-share (Shamir) backup, and ships with two 20-word backup cards. The Model One page lists a 24-word backup, with a 12-word backup needing an advanced setup, and two backup cards.
How do I recover my Trezor wallet? With either model, you recover from your written backup on the device itself, following Trezor's official recovery guide. Never type your backup words into a website, a chat or an app that asks for them. Trezor says it will never contact you about your backup, and a request for backup, PIN or codes is a scam.
Which Supports More Coins?
The Safe 3 supports thousands of coins and tokens through Trezor Suite and third-party apps, and offers a Bitcoin-only edition next to the Universal one. I could not find a coin list for the Model One on its discontinued page, so I will not claim one. For anything beyond Bitcoin on a modern setup, the Safe 3 is the safer assumption, and the cheapest step up for more screen and haptics is the Safe 5.
If a Model One appears on a marketplace or in an old box on a shelf, be careful. A used or old-stock wallet carries a tamper risk, and the whole point of a hardware wallet is that you start from a device nobody else has touched. A new Safe 3 at USD 59 is cheaper than the damage of a compromised device. Duties for Canada are unknown, so check at checkout.
How Do They Work With Canadian Exchanges?
The flow is the same. Open your exchange, choose withdraw, paste the address your Trezor shows, and verify it on the device screen. On Coinbase tick 'Sending to myself'. On Wealthsimple Crypto expect a selfie check before your first external withdrawal, with a BTC minimum of CAD 5. CRA does not treat moving crypto between your own wallets as a disposition. See my Wealthsimple Crypto review.
Which Should You Choose?
Choose the Safe 3 if you want the cheapest credible hardware wallet from a company with a public firmware history. Keep your Model One only if you already own it, use a passphrase and have kept it safe, and think about moving to a Safe 3 or Safe 5 when convenient. I would not buy a Model One at any price. For a bigger screen, see my Trezor Safe 5 review, and my number one pick is the Safe 7 in the best wallets list.
What Has Happened With Trezor Safe 3 And Trezor Model One?
Trezor's compare page lists the Safe 3 at USD 59, the Safe 5 at USD 129 and the Safe 7 at USD 249 (Trezor).
Trezor's fulfilment provider ShipMonk was breached and order contact data was exposed; no devices or keys were affected (Trezor).
Ledger Donjon showed a bypass of some Safe 3 supply-chain countermeasures; Model One was not affected (The Block).
