Both publish their firmware, and both put keys behind a secure chip. The Safe 3 has a certified EAL6+ secure element. The BitBox02 Nova has an EAL6+ chip in a dual-chip design, while the original BitBox02 uses an ATECC608B plus an ATSAMD51J20A microcontroller. BitBox says its source has been independently audited.

Both have recent disclosures. In March 2025 Ledger Donjon bypassed some Safe 3 supply-chain countermeasures with a known voltage-glitch attack. Trezor says that matters for tampered devices and that official purchases need no action (The Block). On August 17, 2026 BitBox published two severe firmware flaws and a funds-locking bug found in its own audits, needing a malicious host or app, with no reported exploitation, fixed in firmware 9.26.5 (BitBox). The Bitcoin-only BitBox edition does not contain the memory flaw. Both companies were also touched by a September 2026 Brevo newsletter incident that leaked or abused email lists, not devices.

Which Is Easier To Use?

The Safe 3 has a 0.96 inch monochrome OLED at 128 x 64 and a two-button pad, USB-C to USB-C cable included, and works with Trezor Suite on Android, Mac, Windows and Linux, with limited iOS support. The BitBox02 has a 128 x 64 OLED too, but controls it with capacitive touch sliders and no buttons. Its BitBoxApp runs on Windows, macOS, Linux and Android, and the Nova adds iPhone and iPad through optional Bluetooth. Backups differ in flavour: the Safe 3 gives two 20-word backup cards and Shamir multi-share, the BitBox gives a microSD that restores instantly and can also show the 24 words. Which Supports More Coins?

Trezor says thousands of coins and tokens and offers a Bitcoin-only edition. BitBox's Multi edition lists Bitcoin, Litecoin, Cardano, Ethereum, Chainlink, BAT and 1,500+ ERC20 tokens, and its Bitcoin-only edition is Bitcoin alone. They are separate products that cannot be converted later. Can XRP be stored on Trezor? I keep my XRP on a Trezor Safe 7, and I did not find XRP on the BitBox list. Check your coins first.

Which Costs Less In Canada?

The Safe 3 costs about a third. Even if you add a metal backup plate, you stay well under the BitBox. Neither shop states Canadian duties. If you pay in USD, add your card's exchange fee, and compare the cart totals.

If it is a flaw in the firmware, both teams publish and fix in the open, and keeping the firmware updated through Trezor Suite or the BitBoxApp matters more than which badge is on the box. Whichever you choose, write the backup down immediately, store it away from the device and test a small restore.

Last, remember that a cheaper wallet is not a lesser one if you use it well: the Safe 3 with a passphrase, a metal backup and a bought-direct box beats a pricier device that was bought from a stranger.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose the Safe 3 if USD 59 for a credible hardware wallet is your priority. Choose the BitBox02 if you hold mostly Bitcoin, like the microSD backup and want a Swiss maker with audited firmware; take the Bitcoin-only edition if that is all you hold.
