Robinhood is the new name Bitbuy and Coinsquare customers are moving to, after Robinhood bought their parent company, WonderFi, on June 1, 2026. Coinbase is my number one exchange for Canadians. Both are registered in Canada, so the choice comes down to fees, coin range and how much you value Robinhood's flat 0.50% fee against Coinbase's bigger menu.

Robinhood Vs Coinbase: Which Is Better For Canadians?

For most Canadians, Coinbase is the better choice (it wins on my ranking, coins available). Robinhood still comes out ahead on published trading fee. Robinhood is best for former Bitbuy and Coinsquare customers who want a flat, simple fee.

Both platforms serve Canadians, but they are built differently. Robinhood Crypto Canada is a new, flat-fee service run by Coinsquare Capital Markets Ltd. (CCML), a CIRO Dealer Member owned by Robinhood Markets, Inc. since the WonderFi deal closed on June 1, 2026. Coinbase is the platform I rank first, at 9.9 out of 10. Robinhood is not in my top 10, and I have not used it, so the Robinhood side below is built from its own fee, transfer and limits pages.

If you came here as a Bitbuy customer: Bitbuy accounts are moving to Robinhood, and the Bitbuy app turns read-only once you switch. The details are in my Robinhood Crypto Canada review.

How Do Robinhood And Coinbase Compare On Fees?

Robinhood charges 0.50% of the CAD value on every executed buy and sell, with a minimum of CAD 0.01 per order and no account maintenance or deposit fees. Coinbase's Canadian fee disclosure says it may charge a Coinbase fee of up to 1.875% (it varies by payment method) on top of the spread shown in your order preview, plus a separate 1% execution fee on simple limit orders.

Published Fee0.50% per tradeUp to 1.875% plus spread
Fee On CAD 500CAD 2.50Up to CAD 9.38, plus spread

Other FeesNo account maintenance or deposit feesFee varies by payment method

On the numbers Robinhood is cheaper on a simple buy. The caveat is that Coinbase's top figure is a ceiling that varies with how you pay, and both sides can have a spread inside the quote. Check the final amount before you confirm. Coinbase's Advanced trading rate table for Canada could not be verified from an official Canadian page, so I leave those rates out.

Which Is Better For Funding And Withdrawing CAD?

Coinbase says you can add cash free with Interac e-Transfer and EFT, and it supports Interac e-Transfer and EFT cash-outs, though it does not publish a withdrawal fee. Robinhood supports Interac e-Transfer and domestic wire, and says it charges no deposit fees. Some users on Reddit report Interac funding delays and slow support at Robinhood, which is anecdotal, so I would send a small amount first.

For moving crypto out, Robinhood charges no fee of its own, but transfers need identity verification plus 2FA, can take up to 5 business days to enable, and are not available for every coin. Bitcoin has no Lightning support and no taproot bc1p addresses. Coinbase charges a network fee only on on-chain sends and a 0.2% processing fee on Lightning sends.

Which Has More Coins?

Coinbase, by a wide margin. Its Canadian page says 200+ assets. Robinhood lists 50+, including BTC, ETH, XRP, SOL, DOGE, ADA, AVAX, XLM, LINK, SHIB, LTC, PEPE, AAVE, BONK and WIF. That covers the big names and some memecoins, but if you want a smaller altcoin, check the list before you fund anything. Robinhood also applies Net Purchase Limits to restricted coins, while BTC, ETH, LTC and BCH are unrestricted.

Which Is Safer?

Both are regulated in Canada. Coinbase Canada is registered as a Restricted Dealer in all provinces and territories and has a CSA decision amended on April 1, 2026. Robinhood's accounts sit with CCML, a CIRO Dealer Member, with the change of control approved on May 20, 2026. Coinbase says it holds customer assets 1:1 and does not lend them without permission. Robinhood says crypto is held in trust with approved custodians and that it does not lend customer crypto or use it to back leveraged positions.

On protection they match: crypto is not covered by CIPF at either one. Robinhood holds CAD in segregated accounts at a Canadian bank with CIPF cover within limits, and Coinbase says its Canadian fiat wallets are not covered by CIPF or CDIC. I would call that a small edge for Robinhood on cash, and nothing for crypto.

Which App Is Easier To Use?

I can speak to Coinbase from my own testing of exchanges, and it is the one I would hand a beginner: simple buy flow, a huge coin list, staking for ETH, ADA, SOL, ATOM and XTZ. Apple Canada shows it at 4.56 from about 65,000 ratings. Robinhood's app is new to Canada, and I have no ratings figure I can verify, so I will not judge it. Its main appeal is a flat, readable fee. Staking for ETH and SOL is listed as coming soon.

What Are The Pros And Cons Of Each?

  • No account maintenance or deposit fees
  • CIRO Dealer Member
  • Home for Bitbuy and Coinsquare users

Robinhood Cons

  • 50+ coins

Who Should Choose Robinhood, And Who Should Choose Coinbase?

Choose Robinhood if your Bitbuy or Coinsquare account is being moved and you want a flat fee on a handful of mainstream coins. Choose Coinbase if you are starting from scratch, want the widest coin list, or want staking today. That is why it holds first place in my ranking.
