The Ledger Flex uses an EAL6+ ST33K1M5 element and connects by Bluetooth, NFC and USB-C. Ledger's own pages do not claim open-source firmware.

The incident records are worth reading side by side. Kraken Security Labs found a firmware downgrade attack and tamper-detection weaknesses in the S1 in 2021, needing physical access (Kraken report). On August 16, 2026 SafePal disclosed that an order-tracking plugin flaw exposed name, email, shipping address, phone and purchase details of about 39,798 customers, but no seed phrases, keys or payment data (SafePal). Ledger has had its own: the 2023 Connect Kit supply-chain attack that drained users of affected dApps while no hardware wallet or seed was compromised, and three signing-review bulletins in August 2026 with no evidence of exploitation. Are Ledger wallets still safe? The devices themselves have not been shown to leak seeds in the records I checked. The risk sits in apps, vendors and your own habits.

The S1 has a 1.3 inch colour screen and buttons. Every transaction means showing a QR code from the SafePal app to the device and a QR code back. It is secure and slightly tedious. The Ledger Flex has a 2.8 inch E Ink touchscreen, a 10 hour battery and the Ledger Wallet app on iOS, Android and desktop. It is the nicer daily driver, and the price gap shows up in how much friction each one adds to a transaction.

Which Supports More Coins?

SafePal says 200+ blockchains. Ledger says 500+ crypto supported in the Ledger Wallet app, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, XRP and stablecoins. The counting methods differ (chains versus assets), so check your exact coin on both lists.
