Which Is More Secure, SafePal Or Tangem?

The S1 and the Tangem card take opposite routes to the same goal. SafePal is air-gapped: it has no Bluetooth, WiFi or NFC, and signs only through QR codes your phone camera scans. It has an EAL6+ chip, a 1.3 inch colour screen at 320 x 320 and physical buttons, so you read and approve a transaction on the device. Tangem is an NFC card with no screen and an EAL6+ chip, approved by tap, with its access code or biometrics in a phone app.

My opinion: for a reader who can follow an on-screen address, the S1's isolated screen beats a tap you cannot read. SafePal's code is only partly open source ("essential aspects" of key generation, per its site). Tangem's app is open source on GitHub, though the card firmware is not stated as open.

Both have blemishes. SafePal: Kraken Security Labs found a firmware downgrade attack and tamper-detection weaknesses in the S1 (disclosed to SafePal on November 18, 2020, published February 16, 2021), which SafePal fixed in firmware V1.0.24. On August 16, 2026 SafePal disclosed that an order-tracking plugin flaw exposed order data (name, email, address, phone, purchase details) for about 39,798 customers who ordered between March 2, 2025 and April 11, 2026. No seed phrases, keys or payment data were exposed, but phishing is a risk, and SafePal said it saw claims of the data for sale.

Tangem: Ledger Donjon's July 9, 2026 laser attack on the card's secure element (physical possession plus about $250,000 of gear; cards cannot be patched) and a fixed December 2024 app-logging bug. Tangem has independent audits from Riscure (December 2, 2023) and Cure53 (March 1, 2026); I did not find a SafePal audit on a primary page.

Which Is Easier To Use?

Tangem. There is nothing to charge, and a 2-card set backs itself up without recovery words. SafePal needs the QR dance: build a transaction in the app, scan it on the S1, sign, scan back. It has a rechargeable battery, and you write down a seed phrase (with passphrase support). A Cypher metal backup is sold separately. The SafePal App is also a software wallet and a browser extension, which is handy, but also another thing to protect.

Which Supports More Coins?

Coins And Backup: SafePal S1 Vs Tangem

ConnectivityAir-gapped, QR codes onlyNFC only, no battery
BackupSeed phrase; passphrase supportedSeedless card sets; optional 12-word seed
Open SourcePartialApp open source; card firmware not stated

Blockchains and assets are not the same unit, so the two numbers do not compare directly. Both handle the major coins; check the specific token before buying.

One practical note on SafePal's August 2026 disclosure: the exposed data is the kind scammers use to write convincing emails. If you ordered between March 2, 2025 and April 11, 2026, treat any message that asks for your recovery phrase, or sends you to a "verification" site, as a scam. SafePal says it hired outside investigators and reported phishing-site takedowns. The same rule applies to any wallet brand: no real support team asks for your seed.

They land within a few dollars of each other, so choose on design. The S1 is #5 in my ranking and Tangem is #2. Buy the S1 through my SafePal link and Tangem through my Tangem link (10% off with my code OCRYPTOCANADA). Duties are unknown for SafePal and not included for Tangem, so allow for CBSA tax on the parcel.

How Do They Work With Canadian Exchanges?

You just copy a receiving address. On Wealthsimple the daily external-withdrawal limit is up to CAD 10,000 after a selfie ID check, and a small test send is recommended. Shakepay's normal speed broadcasts in 1 to 12 hours. Your own wallet transfers are not a disposition for the CRA. My tax guide covers records.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose SafePal S1 if you want a screen and an air gap at roughly $50 and can tolerate the QR routine and a known customer-data breach. See my SafePal review. Choose Tangem if you want the tap-only simplicity, a larger asset list and audits you can read, and you will keep the card physically safe. Review: Tangem. For the rest of the field, try SafePal vs Trezor.
