The ELLIPAL X Card is a battery-free NFC card; the SafePal S1 is a small air-gapped handheld with its own screen. The honest difference: ELLIPAL is smaller and simpler, SafePal costs less and has a Canadian reseller but disclosed a customer-data leak in August 2026.
ELLIPAL Vs SafePal: Which Is Better For Canadians?
For most Canadians, the SafePal S1 is the better pick because it scores 8.8 against 7.5 on my list.

What Happens If You Lose Your ELLIPAL X Card Or SafePal S1?
ELLIPAL X Card: Your coins are recorded on the blockchain, not stored inside the device. Recovery depends on the backup: create 12/18/24-word seed; recover 12/15/18/21/24-word; link several cards to one wallet as backups. Keep that backup offline and never type it into a website or app. 1 security issue is on record for the maker, the latest on 2019-06-25 (Ledger Donjon seed extraction from Ellipal).
SafePal S1: Your coins are recorded on the blockchain, not stored inside the device. Recovery depends on the backup: seed phrase; passphrase supported; Cypher metal backup sold separately. CBSA courier thresholds: shipments from outside the US and Mexico are duty and tax free only up to CAD 20, and from the US or Mexico up to CAD 40, so expect taxes on any hardware wallet. Buy from the maker or an authorised reseller only.
Which Is More Secure, ELLIPAL Or SafePal?
These two are the budget air-gapped pair, but they get there differently. The ELLIPAL X Card is a credit-card-shaped NFC wallet with a CC EAL6+ chip. You never create the wallet on the card itself: it is generated offline on a separate "Starter" device, protected by a Card-PIN of 6 to 16 digits, and the card factory-resets after 10 wrong attempts. There is no battery to fail. ELLIPAL does not say whether its code is open source.
The SafePal S1 is a small handheld with a CC EAL6+ chip, 1.3 inch colour screen and physical buttons. It has no Bluetooth, WiFi or NFC at all: everything moves as QR codes. SafePal says "essential aspects of the code for private key generation and other important features are open source," which is a partial claim, not full openness. The newer SafePal X1 (USD 69.99) adds Bluetooth 5.0 and is described as open source by SafePal.
The track records are different. ELLIPAL's entry is a 2019 Ledger Donjon seed extraction that needs physical access, with no remote exploit reported (Ledger write-up). SafePal had Kraken Security Labs findings in February 2021 on the S1, fixed with firmware V1.0.24, and a bigger issue this summer: on August 16, 2026 SafePal said order information for about 39,798 customers (name, email, shipping address, phone and purchase details) was accessed. Seed phrases, keys and payment data were not. It fixed the flaw, notified customers and hired outside investigators. If you bought from SafePal, expect phishing and never type your recovery phrase into a site (SafePal's notice).
Which Is Easier To Use?
The SafePal S1 is a conventional device. You write down the seed phrase, set a PIN, and optionally a passphrase, then scan QR codes through the SafePal App, which is also a software wallet and browser extension. It uses a built-in rechargeable battery.
The X Card is tap-and-go. Create 12, 18 or 24 words (it can recover 12, 15, 18, 21 or 24), link several cards to one wallet as backups, and use the ELLIPAL App on Android and iOS with WalletConnect for dApps. No screen means you rely on the phone app to show what you are signing, which is a trade-off versus S1's own screen. A passphrase is supported on both.
Which Supports More Coins?
SafePal says 200+ blockchains. ELLIPAL says 10,000+ tokens across 45+ blockchains, plus NFTs on Ethereum and Polygon. Those are different yardsticks (chains versus tokens), so I would not call either a winner. Both cover the mainstream names. For anything obscure, check the maker's list first.
Which Costs Less In Canada?
The S1 is USD 49.99 and the X Card USD 59. SafePal's shipping page lists Canada at 5 to 8 business days for USD 13, free when you buy two or more, and Kantor LTD. (kantor.ca) is an authorised Canadian reseller. ELLIPAL's shipping policy lists Canada at 7 to 15 business days, and its store lets you pick CAD. SafePal's listed price excludes VAT and duty on the X1; for either wallet the duty rate is unknown, so plan on the CBSA courier rules: from outside the US and Mexico, anything above CAD 20 can attract duties and taxes.

How Do They Work With Canadian Exchanges?
Both are self-custody, so withdrawals from Coinbase, Kraken, Newton or NDAX behave as for any wallet. Shakepay lets you send to an external wallet at normal speed in 1 to 12 hours with Shakepay covering fees, and sends are irreversible, so test with a small amount first. Under FINTRAC's travel rule (June 1, 2021) transfers of CAD 1,000 or more carry extra details. Moving coins between your own wallets is not a disposition per the CRA. See crypto taxation in Canada.
Which Should You Choose?
Pick the SafePal S1 for the cheapest air-gapped entry with its own screen and a Canadian reseller. Pick the ELLIPAL X Card if you want a thin, battery-free card you can hide in a wallet and link several of for backup. SafePal's August 2026 customer-data incident is the reason I would buy from a reseller or use a throwaway email at checkout. In my top 7, SafePal S1 is number 5; ELLIPAL X Card sits outside it. Reviews: ELLIPAL X Card and SafePal S1. More in the best crypto wallets in Canada.
SafePal reports that order information for about 39,798 customers was accessed; seed phrases and keys were not.
Kraken Security Labs publishes findings on the SafePal S1; firmware V1.0.24 fixed the downgrade issue.
Ledger Donjon publishes a seed extraction on ELLIPAL that needs physical access.
