Coinbase is a CSA-registered exchange with free Interac funding. MEXC is an offshore exchange with a huge coin list, and its User Agreement names Canada as a prohibited jurisdiction. This is less a fee fight than a question of whether you can use MEXC at all.

Coinbase Vs MEXC: Which Is Better For Canadians?

For most Canadians, Coinbase is the better choice (it wins on canadian status, my ranking, CAD funding). MEXC still comes out ahead on published trading fee, coins available. MEXC is best for experienced traders hunting small-cap altcoins.

Coinbase publishes no minimums, maximums or cash-out fees for Canada, so the bank-side limit is the practical cap. Payment method name must match the Coinbase account name or the deposit goes to manual review for one to three business days. No CAD funding was verified, and Canada is a prohibited jurisdiction so no Canadian route exists under the User Agreement.

Low end is the 0% maker rate Coinbase advertises for Advanced, but the Canadian rate table is not public. What Do Coinbase And MEXC Offer Beyond Buying And Selling?

Coinbase Only

  • Coinbase Advanced: Order book trading with no spread, limit orders and charting. The Canadian maker/taker table is shown only after signing in, so the rate is not published here.
  • Staking: Standard commission 35% of rewards for ADA, ATOM, AVAX, DOT, ETH, MATIC, SOL and XTZ, lower for Coinbase One tiers (31.75%, 28.5%, 25.25%). Canadians must pass a staking appropriateness questionnaire, repeated every 12 months.
  • Coinbase One: Subscription that waives the Coinbase fee on simple buys and sells, with a spread still included. It excludes Advanced and the 1% limit order fee. Subscription price not retrieved.
  • USDC rewards: Rewards on USDC balances, not guaranteed and not covered by CIPF or CDIC. The advertised rate (up to 3.75% APY) was seen on the navigation menu only.
  • Derivatives for eligible investors: Futures through Coinbase Financial Markets launched 2026-09-02 for eligible Canadian investors only, not retail.

MEXC Only

  • Futures: Futures maker fee 0%. Not available to Canadians because Canada is a prohibited jurisdiction.

What Happens To Your Money If Coinbase Or MEXC Fails?

Coinbase: The CSA Restricted Dealer decision gives regulator oversight, a suitability questionnaire, loss notifications and purchase caps, but it is not deposit insurance. Coinbase says fiat and crypto are not protected by CIPF or CDIC. Customer assets sit in omnibus accounts at Coinbase, Inc. and Coinbase Custody Trust Company, and the Canadian pages publish no insurance figure or proof of reserves, so the 1:1 holding promise rests on Coinbase's own statement and public-company audits. Account holds on mismatched names or EFT deposits can lock funds for days.

MEXC: MEXC is not registered with the CSA, is not a CIRO member and has no FINTRAC MSB registration, so no Canadian regulator oversees it. It is not on the CSA banned list either, but it prohibits Canada in its own terms, so an account opened from Canada can be frozen with funds inside. CIPF never covers crypto. Insurance and proof of reserves were not verified. If the exchange fails or is hacked, a Canadian has no regulator to turn to.

How Are Coinbase And MEXC Treated For Tax In Canada?

Coinbase: Buying crypto with CAD is not a disposition, but selling, converting one coin to another, spending, and staking rewards are taxable events. Coinbase Taxes gives a gain/loss report and a transaction history as CSV; you still file the Schedule 3 yourself.

MEXC: Spot sales and crypto-to-crypto trades are dispositions for CRA purposes. No tax export was verified, so rebuild records from trade history.

Selling, swapping or spending crypto is a disposition for the CRA on any platform. This is not tax advice: see my guide to crypto taxes in Canada.

Which Should You Choose, Coinbase Or MEXC?

Choose Coinbase If

  • You want a large public company with a simple app and a CSA-registered Canadian entity.
  • You are comfortable using Advanced rather than the simple buy screen, which costs far more.
  • You want free Interac e-Transfer or EFT funding and a wide altcoin list.

Choose MEXC If

  • You want a huge altcoin list: MEXC bars Canada, so compare registered Canadian dealers instead.

Is Coinbase Or MEXC Better For Canadians In 2026?

Coinbase, and it is not close. It is #1 on my ranked list at 9.8. MEXC sits at #9 with a 7.0, and that number does not mean what it might seem to. MEXC is offshore: it is not on the CSA list of authorized platforms, it has no CIRO membership, I found no FINTRAC match, and its User Agreement, last updated May 29, 2025, names Canada as a prohibited jurisdiction.

Coinbase Canada, Inc. is a CSA Restricted Dealer in every province and territory, with a FINTRAC MSB registration that runs to March 6, 2027. It is also the unit of a Nasdaq-listed company. That does not make it risk-free, since Coinbase says Canadian fiat and crypto balances are not covered by CIPF or CDIC. It does mean a regulator can be asked questions on your behalf.

Which Costs Less When You Actually Trade?

On paper MEXC wins by a mile. Its spot fee is 0% maker and 0.05% taker, or 0.04% with the MX discount. A CAD 1,000 taker trade is CAD 0.50. On Coinbase's simple buy screen the fee is up to 1.875%, so up to CAD 18.75 on CAD 1,000, plus a spread that only shows in the order preview, and simple limit orders add another 1%.

Coinbase Advanced has no spread and is the cheaper route, but the Canadian maker and taker table is only visible after you sign in, so I will not quote a rate for it. If you trade on Coinbase, use Advanced, and read the preview before you confirm.

Here is the catch with MEXC's price. There is no verified CAD funding, so you would have to buy crypto somewhere else first, send it over, and trade at 0.05%. The fee advantage is real. It is also worth little if the account can be shut with your money inside.

Which Is Safer For Canadians?

Coinbase holds customer assets in omnibus accounts at Coinbase, Inc. and Coinbase Custody Trust Company, and says it holds them 1:1. The Canadian pages publish no insurance figure and no proof of reserves, so that promise rests on Coinbase's own statement and its public-company audits. Account holds can lock funds for a few days when a payment name does not match the account name.

MEXC is custodial too, and I could not verify insurance, proof of reserves or the share held in cold storage. Add the prohibited-jurisdiction clause and the exposure is different in kind: an account opened from Canada can be frozen, and a Canadian then has no regulator to turn to. I will not suggest ways around a platform's location rules, because breaching them is exactly what puts the account at risk.

Does MEXC's Coin List Justify The Risk?

MEXC lists 1,425 spot base assets across 1,813 spot pairs. Coinbase's Canadian site offers 200-plus, and it publishes no official Canadian coin list. If you want the newest small caps, the gap is huge.

My view: that is the one reason people give for MEXC, and it is the weakest reason to take a legal and custody risk. If you want more coins than Coinbase, Kraken carries about 490 tickers for Canadians (a derived estimate) and is #3 on my list, registered with the CSA. Those who want low flat fees should look at NDAX at 0.20%. Chasing a coin that only an offshore exchange lists usually means chasing a coin with thin liquidity.

Who Should Choose Coinbase And Who Should Choose MEXC?

The choice is easy for most readers. If you can only pick one of these two, it is Coinbase.

Choose Coinbase if you want a registered, simple exchange. You want free Interac e-Transfer or EFT funding, a CSA-registered Canadian entity and a wide altcoin list, and you will use Advanced to keep costs down.

MEXC is not a platform I can point Canadians to. Its terms bar Canada, I could not verify CAD funding, and an account opened from here risks a freeze. Read my review for the full picture, then pick a registered alternative.

What Has Happened With Coinbase And MEXC?

  • The CSA list of authorized crypto platforms was last updated. MEXC is not on it.
  • Coinbase launched regulated crypto derivatives through Coinbase Financial Markets, for eligible Canadian investors only, not retail.
  • The CSA amended its decision for Coinbase Canada Inc., originally dated April 3, 2024.
  • MEXC updated its User Agreement, which names Canada as a prohibited jurisdiction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Canadians Use MEXC?

MEXC's User Agreement, updated May 29, 2025, names Canada as a prohibited jurisdiction, so no compliant route exists. It is not on the CSA list of authorized platforms or the banned list, which is a different matter from being allowed.

What Happens If MEXC Freezes My Account?

MEXC is not registered with the CSA, is not a CIRO member and has no FINTRAC MSB match, so no Canadian regulator oversees it. An account opened from Canada can be frozen with funds inside, and there is no investor protection fund behind it.

Coinbase is a CSA Restricted Dealer with free Interac funding and a simple app. MEXC has a lower fee and far more coins, but it bars Canada, offers no CAD funding I could verify, and has no Canadian oversight.

What Should I Use Instead Of MEXC For Altcoins?

Start with Kraken, which is CSA-registered and carries about 490 tickers for Canadians after its restrictions. NDAX is a CIRO dealer with about 76 mostly CAD-paired coins and a flat 0.20% fee. Check each coin on the exchange before you deposit.
