Blockstream Jade is an open-source, Bitcoin-and-Liquid signer that costs half the price of a Coldcard Q. The Coldcard is a Bitcoin-only device with a keyboard and dual secure elements, but I can no longer recommend it after July 2026. If you want a Bitcoin-only signer today, Jade is the one that has not lost people's coins to a seed bug.
Blockstream Jade Vs Coldcard: Which Is Better For Canadians?
For most Canadians, the Blockstream Jade is the better pick because Coldcard Q is not one I recommend. My #1 wallet pick overall is the Trezor Safe 7 (9.6/10). I cannot recommend Coldcard after its security issues. My #1 pick is the Trezor Safe 7.

What Happens If You Lose Your Blockstream Jade Or Coldcard Q?
Blockstream Jade: Your coins are recorded on the blockchain, not stored inside the device. Recovery depends on the backup: 12 or 24 word seed; SeedQR supported on both Core and Plus (per spec table). Keep that backup offline and never type it into a website or app. 1 security issue is on record for the maker, the latest on 2025-12-16 (Jade stack overflow in register_descriptor (DARKNAVY)).
Coldcard Q: Your coins are recorded on the blockchain, not stored inside the device. Recovery depends on the backup: microSD or paper BIP-39; Seed XOR bundle sold; passphrase backup planning guide on site. Keep that backup offline and never type it into a website or app. 16 security issues are on record for the maker, the latest on 2026-08-20 (Follow-up security fixes in 5.6.1 and 1.5.1Q). I no longer recommend this wallet: create a new seed on a different device and move your coins.

CBSA courier thresholds: shipments from outside the US and Mexico are duty and tax free only up to CAD 20, and from the US or Mexico up to CAD 40, so expect taxes on any hardware wallet. Buy from the maker or an authorised reseller only.
I can no longer recommend Coldcard. On July 30, 2026 Coinkite disclosed that a build error dating back to 2021 made Coldcard devices create seeds from a weak software random number generator instead of the hardware one. Attackers rebuilt those keys offline and drained wallets. Updating the firmware does not repair a seed that already exists. Sources: Coinkite advisory, CoinDesk.
Which Is More Secure, Blockstream Jade Or Coldcard?
Jade is built differently. It has no physical secure element at all. Blockstream uses a 'Virtual Secure Element' based on blind oracle encryption so that firmware and hardware can both be fully open source, running on an Espressif ESP32. The tradeoff is trusting the design instead of a sealed chip. The Coldcard Q goes the other way, with two secure elements from different vendors, though its source code status was not stated on the pages I used.
Is Blockstream Jade still safe? Yes, with a caveat. In December 2025 Blockstream disclosed a stack overflow in the descriptor-registration call, found by DARKNAVY, affecting firmware 1.0.24 to 1.0.36. It needed malware on the connected phone or computer and an unlocked device, QR-only mode was unaffected and Blockstream found no sign of exploitation. Firmware 1.0.37 fixed it on November 13, 2025, and 1.0.38 added anti-rollback (Blockstream).
Coldcard's problem was more basic. Coinkite says the devices were not hacked and that the weak seeds were the problem. Seeds made on Mk4, Mk5 or Q firmware before 5.6.0 / 1.5.0Q (Mk2 and Mk3: firmware 4.0.1 to 4.1.9) are at risk unless 50 or more private dice rolls or a strong passphrase went into them. Galaxy Research later counted more than 1,596 BTC taken from about 7,300 addresses, and CoinDesk reported a Toronto victim among them. Fixed firmware shipped on July 30 and 31, but anyone with an affected seed has to generate a new one on a different device and move the coins. Estimates of the total vary by outlet and date.
Which Is Easier To Use?
Jade has a 1.9 inch screen and navigation buttons. The Plus adds a camera for QR scanning, a battery and a metal build; the cheaper Core has no camera and no battery. It works through the Blockstream app on Android and iOS, and with Sparrow, Electrum, Specter, Nunchuk, BlueWallet and Bitcoin Core. The Coldcard Q has a 3.2 inch screen, a QWERTY keyboard, a QR scanner and no vendor app, so everything runs through PSBT files. Power users like it. Beginners get lost.
Which Supports More Coins?
Neither supports much beyond Bitcoin. Jade handles Bitcoin and Liquid assets. The Coldcard Q is Bitcoin only. If you also hold ETH or SOL, you need a different wallet, and my best wallets list starts with the Trezor Safe 7.
Which Costs Less In Canada?

USD 319 sale (USD 369 list) on a September 2025 store snapshot

The Jade Core at USD 99 is the cheapest route to a reputable open-source Bitcoin signer, but it has no camera or battery. Allow 2 to 4 weeks for delivery and think about courier taxes.
How Do They Work With Canadian Exchanges?
For Bitcoin, the easiest Canadian route is an exchange that pays out to your own wallet: Bull Bitcoin pays to on-chain, Lightning or Liquid with no payout fee (minimum 0.001 BTC on-chain), and Bitcoin Well delivers straight to your wallet. See my Bull Bitcoin review. Moving coins between your own wallets is not a disposition for the CRA.
If you are weighing Jade Plus against Jade Core, the practical difference is the camera. The Plus scans QR codes, so it can sign fully air-gapped, and it has a battery. The Core relies on USB-C and Bluetooth, which is fine for many people but gives up the air-gap. If you already own a Coldcard and are shopping for a replacement, the Plus is the closer match to how a Coldcard is used.
When you move coins to the new device, do a small test transaction first, confirm the receiving address on the screen of the new wallet, and only then sweep the rest. Record the move for your own books: it is a transfer between wallets you own, not a sale, but the CRA still expects records kept for six years.
Which Should You Choose?
Choose Jade (Plus for QR air-gap, Core if you want to save money) as a Bitcoin-only signer. Do not buy a Coldcard. If you own one, check the firmware that generated your seed, and if it is in the affected range without dice rolls or a strong passphrase, create a new seed on another device and sweep the funds. My Coldcard Q review is kept online for owners. Related: Coldcard Q Vs Jade Plus compares the two specific models.
What Has Happened With Blockstream Jade And Coldcard?
Coldcard 5.6.1 and 1.5.1Q fixed more issues and now require user-added entropy when making a seed (Coinkite).
Coinkite disclosed the seed-generation flaw and shipped fixed firmware (advisory).
Blockstream published its Jade disclosure on the descriptor stack overflow, fixed in firmware 1.0.37 (Blockstream).
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Blockstream Jade Still Safe?
Yes. The one disclosed issue, a stack overflow found in late 2025, needed malware plus an unlocked device and was fixed in firmware 1.0.37. Blockstream found no sign of exploitation. Keep the firmware current.
Is Coldcard The Best Bitcoin Wallet?
It had a loyal following, but after the July 2026 weak-seed theft I cannot recommend it. See the notice at the top of this page.
Is Blockstream Jade Good?
It is a solid open-source Bitcoin and Liquid signer at a lower price than most rivals, with a virtual secure element rather than a physical chip. That design is a deliberate tradeoff.
What Is The Most Trusted Cold Wallet?
Trust comes from open code, disclosure habits and your own backup. My overall number one is the Trezor Safe 7. For Bitcoin-only, Jade is one I would consider.
