Blockstream Jade is an open-source, Bitcoin and Liquid hardware wallet from Blockstream, sold in two current models: the Jade Plus at USD 169.99 and the Jade Core at USD 99. The original Jade is sold out on the store. The unusual part is the security design. Jade has no physical secure element chip. It uses what Blockstream calls a Virtual Secure Element, which trades chip secrecy for fully open hardware and firmware. It is not in my top 7 hardware wallets for Canadians, mainly because it covers Bitcoin and Liquid only.
- Best for: Bitcoin holders who want open hardware and firmware, QR signing and a lower price than most premium signers
- Skip it if: you want a certified secure element chip or support for Ethereum, Solana and XRP
- Price: Jade Plus USD 169.99, Jade Core USD 99.00, shown in the Blockstream store, which lets you select Canada (CAD)
- Honest caveat: no physical secure element, so the protection comes from the design and encryption scheme, not from a chip
- PriceJade Plus USD 169.99 (USD 169 to 189 depending on bundle on the store); Jade Core USD 99.00. Original Jade listed at USD 67 sale (was USD 79) but...
- Secure Elementno physical secure element: 'Virtual Secure Element' using blind oracle encryption so firmware and hardware stay fully open-source;...
- ConnectionJade Core: USB-C, Bluetooth. Jade Plus: USB-C, Bluetooth, camera (air-gapped QR), SD card or USB drive (JadeLink)
- Backup12 or 24 word seed; SeedQR supported on both Core and Plus (per spec table)
- Open Sourceyes: fully open-source firmware and hardware
My #1 pick: before you buy the Blockstream Jade, look at the Trezor Safe 7 (9.6/10), the wallet I use and rank first for Canadians.

What Is The Blockstream Jade And Who Is It For?
Jade is Blockstream's hardware wallet, built around an Espressif ESP32 microcontroller and a small screen. It is designed with Bitcoin in full focus, in Blockstream's words, and it also supports Liquid assets, the sidechain Blockstream runs. There is no altcoin menu.
The two models target different people. The Jade Plus adds a camera, a metal body and a battery, which makes it a proper air-gapped QR signer: it can read and show QR codes instead of talking to a computer. The Jade Core is the budget unit with no camera and no battery, connecting by USB-C or Bluetooth. If you want to keep a wallet away from your phone's radio, the Plus is the one to look at.
It works with the Blockstream app (Android over Bluetooth and USB-C, iOS over Bluetooth), and with Sparrow, Electrum, Specter, Nunchuk, BlueWallet and Bitcoin Core. That is a good list for anyone who wants to run their own setup. If you want a simpler Bitcoin-only alternative, compare it with SeedSigner, or look at the Jade versus Trezor comparison.
How Secure Is The Blockstream Jade?
This is the question that deserves a straight answer, because Jade does not have what most hardware wallets advertise. There is no physical secure element, the tamper-resistant chip that Ledger, Tangem and others use to store keys. Blockstream's answer is a Virtual Secure Element built on blind oracle encryption.
Blockstream says this design lets the hardware and firmware stay fully open source, since there is no secret chip to hide behind, and that the keys are protected by encryption instead. I am describing the design as Blockstream describes it, not vouching for it independently, and the pages I checked did not spell out every detail of how the oracle part works. Read Blockstream's own explanation before you buy.
What that means for you: you are trusting a published encryption scheme and open code rather than a certified chip. Some people prefer that because everything can be inspected. Others want the chip, and the Jade is the wrong pick for them. Neither view is silly.
The wallet keeps a standard 12 or 24 word recovery seed, so your backup is the standard kind, and SeedQR is supported. Passphrase support was not stated on the pages I checked, so confirm it on Blockstream's site before you rely on it. The Jade Plus can sign air gapped using its camera and an SD card or USB drive, so no live link to a computer is needed.
How Much Does The Blockstream Jade Cost In Canada?
Blockstream's store lists the Jade Plus at USD 169.99 (USD 169 to 189 depending on the bundle) and the Jade Core at USD 99.00. The store lets you select Canada and shows prices in CAD. International delivery is quoted at 2 to 4 weeks, and the Jade Plus page carries a free international shipping banner.
I did not find a duty figure for the device. Under the CBSA courier rules, a shipment from the United States or Mexico up to CAD 40 is duty and tax free, CAD 40 to 150 is duty free with taxes, and above CAD 150 duties and taxes apply. Other countries are tax free only up to CAD 20. Either Jade model will likely cost more than that, so plan for taxes at the door and check with the courier.
How Do You Set Up The Blockstream Jade?
Blockstream's official route is the Blockstream app or a web flasher for firmware, then on-device setup. I will not make up screen-by-screen steps that I did not source. The outline for any Jade is:
- Buy from Blockstream's store. The store ships to Canada and prices in CAD.
- Update the firmware. Use Blockstream's app or its web flasher so you run the current release.
- Create the wallet on the device. Choose a PIN and write the 12 or 24 word recovery seed on paper, offline.
- Pair it with a wallet app. The Blockstream app, Sparrow, Nunchuk and others work with it.
- Test small. Receive a small Bitcoin amount, then send it back before moving savings.
Does The Blockstream Jade Work With Canadian Exchanges?
Yes. Withdraw Bitcoin from your exchange to a receive address from your Jade, and check the address on the Jade screen before you confirm. Withdrawals from Canadian platforms work like any self-custody wallet.
Coinbase has a "Sending to myself" checkbox for your own wallet, and for CAD 1,000 or more to another entity it needs the recipient's name and address. Kraken shows a Travel Rule pop-up for CAD 1,000 or more and does not allow sending to a third party. NDAX asks who you are sending to above CAD 1,000, and choosing yourself needs nothing else. Newton needs the address saved and verified in its address book first. Wealthsimple Crypto supports external wallet withdrawals with a daily limit up to CAD 10,000.
The CRA says transfers between wallets you own are not a taxable disposition, but keep records for six years. See my guide to crypto taxes in Canada.
Which Coins Does The Blockstream Jade Support?
Bitcoin and Liquid assets, and that is all. No Ethereum, no Solana, no XRP. If your main holding is one of those, a wallet like Tangem or a Trezor will serve you better, and the best crypto wallets in Canada page lists the options by coin.
What Are The Blockstream Jade Pros And Cons?
Pros
- Open-source firmware and hardware
- Jade Core at USD 99 is cheap for a Bitcoin signer
- Jade Plus supports air-gapped QR signing
- Works with Sparrow, Nunchuk, Electrum, Specter and Bitcoin Core
- Store prices in CAD for Canada
Cons
- No physical secure element
- Security rests on a software design, not a certified chip
- Bitcoin and Liquid only
- Original Jade is sold out
- Passphrase support not stated on the pages I checked
Is The Blockstream Jade Worth It For Canadians?
If you want Bitcoin only, you like open hardware and you can accept the virtual secure element design, yes. The Jade Plus at USD 169.99 with a camera and battery is a fair price for an air-gapped signer, and the Core is a decent entry point. If a certified chip is a hard requirement for you, or you hold other coins, look elsewhere in my ranking of Canadian crypto wallets.
