Beaver Bitcoin and VirgoCX are two Canadian crypto exchanges that approach trading very differently. Beaver Bitcoin focuses solely on Bitcoin with a transparent, self-custody model, while VirgoCX offers over 90 cryptocurrencies, zero commissions, and a non-custodial model it adopted in April 2025.
Beaver Bitcoin Vs VirgoCX: Which Is Better For Canadians?
Beaver Bitcoin wins by default for Canadians. The OSC lists VirgoCX's restricted dealer registration as suspended effective November 24, 2025, and the CSA list shows it under terms requiring a wind-down of its registrable business. It remains a FINTRAC-registered money services business. Since VirgoCX’s CSA dealer registration is suspended, I recommend Coinbase (9.8/10, #1 on my list): open a Coinbase account.

What Are The Key Differences Between Beaver Bitcoin And VirgoCX?
Beaver Bitcoin Vs VirgoCX: Side By Side
Beaver Bitcoin
VirgoCX
Description
Beaver Bitcoin is a Canadian, Bitcoin-only service built around self-custody. Every purchase is delivered straight to your own wallet and Beaver holds nothing for you, so you need a Bitcoin wallet before you can buy. It offers automatic recurring buys by pre-authorized debit.
VirgoCX was a Toronto-based platform that served Canadians as a CSA restricted dealer. In April 2025 it ended custodial accounts and moved to a non-custodial service, where crypto goes to your own wallet. The OSC lists its dealer registration as suspended effective November 24, 2025.
Coins
Bitcoin only.
It advertised 90+ coins including BTC, ETH, XRP, SOL and USDC before the change. The current list is not published.
Fees
One flat 1.5% fee on buys, shown in the price. Beaver pays the Bitcoin network fee on every delivery. In Oleg's test a CAD 100 buy delivered CAD 98.50 of BTC. No spread beyond the stated fee is claimed.
Past tense: Oleg's table cited spreads of 0.95% on BTC and ETH and 1.6% on other assets, with volume tiers. The official fee page is behind a bot check, so this was not re-confirmed and is no longer current.
Pros
Non-custodial, every buy goes to your own wallet
One flat 1.5% fee, network fee covered by Beaver
Hands-off recurring buys by pre-authorized debit
Simple interface, sign-up in a couple of minutes
Sell function too: send BTC and receive CAD
Personal support and a dedicated service above CAD 100,000
Was registered with the CSA as a restricted dealer until suspended
Non-custodial service from April 2025
OTC desk (VirgoCX Wealth)
Still a FINTRAC registered money services business
Cons
Bitcoin only, so altcoin buyers need to look elsewhere
Shorter track record than Bull Bitcoin or Bitcoin Well (launched 2022)
No mobile app yet, only a mobile-friendly website
Full KYC for everyone, no anonymous purchase
You must set up your own wallet first
Not on the CSA list: FINTRAC MSB only, no securities-law protections
No crypto insurance, since Beaver holds no customer assets
Registration as a dealer suspended effective November 24, 2025
The non-custodial service is not offered under its securities registration, and no regulator has confirmed it is regulated under securities law
No securities-law investor protections for the non-custodial service
Custodial accounts ended; assets left after the deadline were sold
Fee page and coin list could not be verified
Security
Beaver does not hold your bitcoin: it goes to your wallet address, so there is no pool of customer funds at Beaver to hack or freeze. KYC needs a government ID photo, address, job title and a selfie. Beaver is a FINTRAC MSB; it is not a CSA-registered dealer.
Past tense: VirgoCX stopped holding crypto for customers in 2025. No protections under securities law were confirmed for the non-custodial service, and CIPF never covered crypto.
Methods To Buy
Interac e-Transfer (Instant Buy), bill payment and wire (Large Buy), pre-authorized debit (Recurring Buy).
Past tense: Interac e-Transfer (free, 2021 help article, not re-confirmed after the 2025 switch).
App
No mobile app; the website is fully mobile-friendly.
Apple Canada app 'Virgo: Buy Bitcoin, XRP and More' rated 4.43 from 395 ratings (2026-10-03).
Account Limits
Instant Buy by e-Transfer up to CAD 20,000. Large Buy by bill payment or wire up to CAD 100,000. Above CAD 100,000, Beaver Plaid personal service. Recurring Buy weekly, bi-weekly or monthly.
Not published. Custodial accounts ended in 2025; customers must hold crypto in their own wallets.

What Happens To Your Money If Beaver Bitcoin Or VirgoCX Fails?
Beaver Bitcoin: Beaver is a FINTRAC-registered money services business, which covers anti-money-laundering reporting, not investor protection: it is not on the CSA list and CIPF does not apply. Because it holds no customer bitcoin, a hack or failure of Beaver would mostly hit money in transit or a pending order, not your stored coins. The residual risks are a failed or delayed purchase, an unpublished sell process, and the shorter operating history since 2022. Its FINTRAC number changed in 2026 after the old registration expired.
VirgoCX: The OSC lists VirgoCX's restricted dealer registration as suspended since November 24, 2025, and the CSA list shows terms requiring a wind-down of its registrable business. It stopped holding customer crypto in 2025, so the remaining service is non-custodial and sits outside securities-law investor protections. A FINTRAC MSB registration covers anti-money-laundering rules only. CIPF never covered crypto. Use this platform only if you accept those gaps, or move to a registered dealer.
How Are Beaver Bitcoin And VirgoCX Treated For Tax In Canada?
Beaver Bitcoin: Buying bitcoin with CAD is not a disposition. Selling for CAD, or spending bitcoin, is a disposition you report to the CRA. Beaver publishes no tax export that we could verify, so keep your own records.
VirgoCX: Past activity on VirgoCX followed the usual rules: selling, swapping or spending crypto are dispositions reportable to the CRA. Check your old statements for cost basis; export tools are Not published.
Selling, swapping or spending crypto is a disposition for the CRA on any platform. This is not tax advice: see my guide to crypto taxes in Canada.
Which Should You Choose, Beaver Bitcoin Or VirgoCX?
Choose Beaver Bitcoin If
You want bitcoin delivered straight to your own wallet with no account balance
You want a simple recurring buy by pre-authorized debit
You accept a flat 1.5% fee and a FINTRAC-only registration
Choose VirgoCX If
You already hold a VirgoCX history and need to check records
You are looking only for registered Canadian dealers: pick another platform
This is a comparison of two very different ways to buy. Beaver Bitcoin is a Canadian, Bitcoin-only service that delivers every purchase to your own wallet. VirgoCX is a CSA-listed Canadian platform that stopped holding customer crypto in 2025. The cards above give you the verdict, so below is the detail behind it, with every figure taken from each platform's own pages or the Canadian regulators' lists. Where I could not verify a number, I say so instead of guessing.

Worth Knowing
Instant Buy, Large Buy and Recurring Buy tiers; dollar limits not published
Non-custodial buy-and-sell only since 2025
Beaver Bitcoin. Beaver charges a 1.5% fee on Bitcoin purchases and pays the Bitcoin network fee for the delivery on top of that. When we tested it with a $100 purchase, we received exactly $98.50 worth of BTC, which is exactly what the quote promised. There is no staking, no trading screen and no ladder of tiers to learn, which keeps the cost easy to predict.
VirgoCX. I cannot give you a verified VirgoCX fee. The official fee page sat behind a bot check when I tried it, and I will not substitute third-party review figures. Ask for a live quote and compare it with your other options before you buy.
Which Is Better For Funding And Withdrawing CAD?
Beaver Bitcoin. You can fund a purchase by Interac e-Transfer, wire transfer or bill payment. Beaver says e-Transfer deliveries land in minutes and a wire sent in the morning can settle the same day, but it does not publish a fee or a dollar limit for any of the three, so I will not quote one. The service is built for buying, so check how selling or cashing out works before you rely on it.
VirgoCX. A VirgoCX support article, published in 2021, lists Interac e-Transfer as free with no funding minimum. That article predates the 2025 switch to a non-custodial service, and I have not reconfirmed it since, so treat it as a starting point rather than a promise.

Beaver Bitcoin. One coin: Bitcoin. That is the whole product, and for a lot of Canadians it is exactly the point. Beaver offers Instant Buy, Large Buy and Recurring Buy options, all of which deliver Bitcoin to a wallet address that you provide.
VirgoCX. The coin count is not verified. What did change is the model: since April 4, 2025 VirgoCX no longer holds crypto for customers, so whatever you buy has to go to your own wallet.
Which Is Safer?
Regulation At A Glance: Beaver Bitcoin Vs VirgoCX
Platform
Status
Beaver Bitcoin
FINTRAC money services business (registered July 13, 2026), not on the CSA list
VirgoCX
On the CSA list under terms requiring wind-down of its registrable business
Beaver Bitcoin. Beaver is operated by Dam Good Money Corp. and is registered with FINTRAC as a money services business (registration N300000998, registered July 13, 2026, expiry November 30, 2028). It is not on the CSA list of authorized platforms and does not operate under a CSA decision, so it is not a CSA-registered dealer. The model matters more than the label here: you must supply a wallet address, so Beaver never holds your coins and there is no exchange balance to freeze or lose. The trade-off lands on you. Set up a good wallet first and back up your seed phrase properly.
VirgoCX. VirgoCX is on the CSA list, but the entry is marked as subject to terms and conditions requiring wind-down of its registrable business. The company began going non-custodial on April 4, 2025, set a transition deadline of June 16, 2025, and force-sold assets remaining after that date. It now offers a non-custodial buy-and-sell service that it says is not offered under its securities dealer registration, and I could not confirm any securities-law investor protections for it. Its FINTRAC registrations are active (VirgoCX Inc. M19955733 to October 21, 2027; VirgoCX Direct Inc. M21010383 to November 22, 2026).
Neither platform is a place to park a large balance for years. As always, we recommend moving long-term holdings to your own crypto wallet.
Which App Is Easier To Use?
Beaver Bitcoin. There is no trading interface to learn. You enter an amount, give a wallet address, pay, and the Bitcoin arrives. I could not verify an app-store rating for Beaver, so I will not quote one. The one hurdle is that you need a Bitcoin wallet before your first purchase, which is a real step for a total beginner.
VirgoCX. I could not verify an app-store rating for VirgoCX, so I will not quote one. Because custody ended in 2025, the day-to-day experience is now a buy-and-send flow, much closer to Beaver Bitcoin than to a full exchange.

Who Should Choose Beaver Bitcoin, And Who Should Choose VirgoCX?
Pick Beaver Bitcoin if you only want Bitcoin, you already have a wallet or are happy to set one up, and you prefer one flat fee over a spread you have to estimate.
Pick VirgoCX only if you already use it and are comfortable with a non-custodial buy-and-send flow. Most new buyers are better served by a platform with a clean registration record.
So Which One Should You Pick?
On the verified numbers, Beaver Bitcoin fits best for this job: bitcoin only, sent straight to your own wallet. VirgoCX fits best for this one: people who want a non-custodial Canadian buy-and-sell service. If those two jobs overlap for you, start with a small first purchase on the one that suits your wallet, bank and comfort level, check what actually arrives, and only then scale up. The cheapest headline fee is not always the cheapest purchase once spread, withdrawal costs and limits are counted.
