Our top pick for Canadians: CoinbaseSign Up

To buy Kyber Network Crystal (KNC) in Canada, open an account on a CSA-registered exchange that lists it, verify your ID, deposit Canadian dollars and place the order. On my scorecard that means Coinbase (9.8), Kraken (9.2) and Crypto.com.

MEXC and Bitunix also list it, but they are offshore, so read the labels before you consider them.

  1. Coinbase, 9.8: a large, familiar app with free Interac funding
  2. Kraken, 9.2: free Interac deposits and cheaper trading on Kraken Pro
  3. Crypto.com: a broad app, though its Canadian fee schedule is not published where I could check

I have been trading crypto in Canada since 2016 and I have tested 61 exchanges to find the best ways for Canadians to buy coins like this one, and I share what I find on my YouTube channel, OCryptoCanada, and in the r/OCryptoCanada community. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned trader, this guide will help you make a smart, informed decision.

Part of my guide to how to buy crypto in Canada.

Why Buy Kyber Network Crystal (KNC)?

Kyber Network Crystal (KNC) isn’t just another cryptocurrency, it’s the governance token for a DeFi liquidity protocol, powering fast, decentralized token swaps. Canadians might be drawn to its trading efficiency and staking rewards, whether you’re in Vancouver or the Prairies.

A quick heads-up: crypto investments are risky, so always weigh the ups and downs before jumping in. I am not quoting a live KNC price here, since it would be out of date within hours. Check the order screen of your platform for the current CAD price, and judge any coin by what it does rather than by a chart. The facts below come from the project's own site, docs or whitepaper, or from the wallet vendor's own support pages.

What Is Kyber Network Crystal (KNC)?

Kyber Network Crystal is an ERC-20 utility and governance token at the centre of the KyberSwap ecosystem, used to govern KyberSwap through KyberDAO. It launched on Ethereum in 2017. Kyber's token sale concluded on 16 September 2017, raising 200,000 ETH from 21,309 unique addresses, with 226,000,000 KNC minted. The original allocation was 61.06% to community investors, 19.47% to company operational reserves and 19.47% to founders, advisors and early investors under a 2-year vesting with a 1-year lock-up. Kyber says all vested KNC for founders, advisors and early investors was unlocked and distributed by the end of September 2019.

What Happened To The Old KNC Token?

In 2021 KNC was upgraded and the old token was renamed KNCL (Kyber Network Crystal Legacy), while the new token kept the KNC ticker. Migration began on 20 April 2021 under KyberDAO proposal KIP-6, and KNCL holders can still convert to the current KNC at a 1:1 rate through the KyberSwap staking page. KyberDAO also approved minting an additional 42,050,588 KNC for an Ecosystem Growth Fund, completed 15 June 2021, which set the combined KNC plus KNCL max supply at 252,301,550 KNC. The KNC contract can only be minted or upgraded through a successful KyberDAO vote, via the Kyber Governance Long Executor, and the owner multisig can only withdraw tokens sent to the contract by mistake.

How Does KyberDAO Staking Work?

KNC holders who stake gain voting power in KyberDAO and can vote on Kyber Improvement Proposals, and all changes need a majority vote. Kyber says 10% of KyberSwap pool fees go to KyberDAO and are converted to KNC for stakers who vote, with the other 90% going to liquidity providers. That ratio was set by a KIP-8 vote and can change by a new vote. Kyber's FAQ says KyberDAO staking has no slashing, so you can always withdraw the full KNC you deposited, and staking needs no node, only an Ethereum wallet holding KNC.

Only KNC on the Ethereum network can be staked in KyberDAO, because the DAO smart contracts live on Ethereum. Holders can delegate voting power to another Ethereum address. The delegate votes and receives rewards, but cannot touch or withdraw the delegator's staked KNC. Under Kyber's Gas Refund Program, Ethereum KyberSwap users staking 500, 5,000 or 10,000 KNC get 10%, 15% or 20% of gas refunded in KNC, with trades worth at least USD 200 and a cap of USD 200 per roughly 4 weeks.

What Are The Risks And Audits Behind KNC?

Hacken audited the KNC token contract on 18 May 2021 and found no issues, rating it 'Well-secured'. Kyber also says KyberSwap and KyberDAO contracts were audited by teams such as ChainSecurity and Hacken. That said, Kyber's docs state that on 22 Nov 2023 the KyberSwap Elastic protocol experienced a security incident and point to official channels for details. The notice concerns Elastic, not the KNC token contract, but it is a reminder that DeFi protocols carry smart-contract risk even after audits. Kyber lists further KNC uses such as liquidity provision, liquidity mining incentives and collateral on some lending platforms such as Aave and QiDao.

Where Can You Buy Kyber Network Crystal (KNC) In Canada?

These are the platforms on my scorecard whose asset lists include KNC, in my fixed ranking order. Wealthsimple is left out because it publishes no coin list I can check, and I will not claim it carries KNC. Bitbuy and Coinsquare are left out because new accounts are being folded into Robinhood.

Buy Kyber Network Crystal (KNC) On Crypto.com

Crypto.com serves Canadians through Foris DAX CAN ULC, a CSA Restricted Dealer. Its Canadian marketing says maker and taker fees run as low as 0.08% and 0.18%, but I could not retrieve its Canadian fee schedule, so treat that as a best case and read the order preview. Deposits by bank transfer, card or crypto are listed as zero-fee. Read my Crypto.com review.

How Do You Buy Kyber Network Crystal (KNC) In Canada Step By Step?

  1. Sign up to Coinbase. I use Coinbase here because it is the first CSA-registered platform in the table above that lists KNC. Download the app or use the website.
  2. Verify your identity. Upload a government-issued ID and a selfie, and sometimes proof of address. Verification can take up to 24 hours, so do it before you plan to buy.
  3. Deposit Canadian dollars. Interac e-Transfer and bank EFT are free for adding cash on Coinbase, and card and PayPal also work for buying, but they usually cost more.
  4. Find KNC. Search for the name and the ticker and check that both match. Some tickers are shared by unrelated coins, so confirm you picked Kyber Network Crystal.
  5. Place the order. Use a market order for speed or a limit order if you want to name your price. Read the fee preview, because a simple buy can cost up to 1.875% plus the spread.
  6. Move long-term holdings to your own wallet. Check that the wallet supports KNC and its network, and send a small test transfer first. My best crypto wallets for Canadians list covers the options.

Which Wallets Support Kyber Network Crystal (KNC), And How Do You Move It There?

KNC is native on Ethereum, with the token contract address 0xdeFA4e8a7bcBA345F687a2f1456F5Edd9CE97202, and Kyber's docs list deployments on Arbitrum, Polygon PoS, Optimism, Base, zkSync Era, Polygon zkEVM, Linea, BitTorrent Chain and Scroll. Kyber's docs say KyberDAO supports MetaMask, Ledger, Trezor, JSON keystore files, Coinbase Link and WalletConnect, and KyberSwap generally works with MetaMask, WalletConnect and Coinbase Wallet.

I found no dedicated Ledger or Trezor KNC page and no official exchange withdrawal guide, so for a withdrawal choose the network that matches the KNC you want, use Ethereum if you plan to stake, and send a small test first. Be careful not to confuse the old KNCL contract with current KNC.

How Risky Is Kyber Network Crystal (KNC)?

Any coin outside the top few can fall hard and trade thinly, and KNC is no exception. Thin trading means a wider gap between the buy and sell price, and that gap is a real cost on a small order. Buy only what you can lose, and decide in advance whether this is a trade or a long-term hold. I do not make price predictions, and nobody else can either.

How Do You Store Kyber Network Crystal (KNC)?

Keeping your KNC safe is something you must do if you do not want to risk it being stolen. For safekeeping, use a private crypto wallet. Choose one of the crypto wallets I reviewed, and then send your KNC from the exchange you used to buy it to your wallet. If you buy any valuable cryptocurrency, always move it to a private wallet to keep it secure. Check that the wallet supports the coin and its network first, because sending to an unsupported address can lose the funds for good. Write your recovery phrase on paper, never store it in a photo or a cloud note, and never share it with anyone, including anyone claiming to be support.

How Do You Sell Kyber Network Crystal (KNC) In Canada?

To sell, go to the exchange where you bought it. If your coins are in a wallet, send them back to the exchange first, then click sell. You can swap KNC for another cryptocurrency, or sell it for Canadian dollars if the exchange offers that, and then withdraw to your bank account. Withdrawal fees and limits differ by platform. My guide on how to sell or cash out crypto in Canada has the full steps.

Do You Pay Tax When You Buy Kyber Network Crystal (KNC) In Canada?

Buying KNC with Canadian dollars is not itself a taxable event. Selling it, swapping it for another coin or spending it can be. The CRA says that, depending on your activities, you may realize business income (or loss) or a capital gain (or loss), and the two are reported differently. Record the date and CAD value of every buy, sale and swap. See my crypto taxation guide and how to report your crypto taxes.

What Changed For Buying Kyber Network Crystal (KNC) In Canada In October 2026?

  • Kraken republished its fee schedule, with Pro spot starting at 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker.
  • Coinbase launched regulated crypto derivatives for eligible Canadian investors through Coinbase Financial Markets. It is not a way to buy the coin itself.
  • The CSA issued a Restricted Dealer decision for Foris DAX CAN ULC, the entity behind Crypto.com in Canada.
