To buy GAS in Canada, open an account on a CSA-registered exchange that lists it, verify your ID, deposit Canadian dollars and place the order. On my scorecard that means Kraken (9.2) and Crypto.com.
Bitunix also lists it, but it is offshore, so read the labels before you consider it.
- Kraken, 9.2: free Interac deposits and cheaper trading on Kraken Pro
- Crypto.com: a broad app, though its Canadian fee schedule is not published where I could check
I have been trading crypto in Canada since 2016 and I have tested 61 exchanges to find the best ways for Canadians to buy coins like this one, and I share what I find on my YouTube channel, OCryptoCanada, and in the r/OCryptoCanada community. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned trader, this guide will help you make a smart, informed decision.

Part of my guide to how to buy crypto in Canada.
Why Buy GAS?
GAS isn’t your typical crypto, it’s the fuel for the NEO blockchain, powering transaction fees and smart contract execution in a high-performance ecosystem often called the “Chinese Ethereum.” Canadians might be drawn to its utility and staking potential, whether you’re chilling in Vancouver or out on the Prairies.
A quick heads-up: crypto investments are risky, so always weigh the ups and downs before jumping in. I am not quoting a live GAS price here, since it would be out of date within hours. Check the order screen of your platform for the current CAD price, and judge any coin by what it does rather than by a chart. The facts below come from the project's own site, docs or whitepaper, or from the wallet vendor's own support pages.
What Is GAS, And How Does It Differ From NEO?
GAS is the utility token of the Neo blockchain, used for network fees, smart contract deployments and dApp purchases. Neo runs a dual-token model: NEO is the governance token and GAS is the token that fuels the network. The two behave very differently. NEO has a fixed supply of 100 million indivisible tokens, with the Neo Foundation initially reserving about 50% to support ecosystem development. On Neo N3, GAS has no supply cap, and it is divisible to 0.00000001, which the project calls one Datoshi.
Neo's dBFT consensus mechanism is described by the project as guaranteeing fast and efficient finality in a single block. The platform offers smart contracts in Python, C#, Go, TypeScript and Java, plus built-in oracle services, NeoFS decentralized storage, the Neo Name Service, NeoID and cross-chain interoperability. Neo X is an EVM-based sidechain in the Neo ecosystem.
Where Does GAS Come From?
The network generates 5 GAS per block. Of that, 10% goes to NEO holders when they transfer or vote their NEO, 10% to committee and consensus nodes, and 80% to voters. That is why holding NEO and voting is the documented way to earn GAS. On Neo N3, transaction fees are burned rather than redistributed, which offsets some of the emission.
Governance on Neo N3 works through candidates, a 21-member committee of the top vote-getters that adjusts network parameters, and 7 consensus nodes chosen from the committee, with votes recalculated every 21 blocks. Ledger describes NEO staking in similar terms, as holding NEO and voting for council members through Neon Wallet paired with a Ledger.
What Should You Know About The Neo Legacy To N3 Migration?
Neo Legacy (2.x) became Neo N3. NEO and GAS migrated from Legacy to N3 at a 1:1 ratio, and GAS generation on Legacy stopped at block 8,000,000. Neon Wallet desktop and NeoLine supported native migration inside the wallet. If you are buying GAS today you will be dealing with N3, but old forum posts and wallets may still mention Legacy, so check which network an address belongs to before you send anything. Exchange listings can also describe the token differently, so confirm the ticker and the network at the withdrawal screen.
Where Can You Buy GAS In Canada?
These are the platforms on my scorecard whose asset lists include GAS, in my fixed ranking order. Wealthsimple is left out because it publishes no coin list I can check, and I will not claim it carries GAS. Bitbuy and Coinsquare are left out because new accounts are being folded into Robinhood.
| Exchange | Canadian Status | Published Fee | CAD Funding | My Rank | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kraken | CSA-registered (Restricted Dealer) | Kraken Pro 0.40% maker / 0.80% taker; Instant Buy 1% | Free Interac e-Transfer deposits | #3 | Buy GAS |
| Bitunix | Offshore, terms prohibit Canada | See Bitunix fee page | No CAD funding | Not ranked | Buy GAS |
| Crypto.com | CSA-registered (Restricted Dealer) | Not published for Canada | Not verified | Not ranked | Buy GAS |
Coinbase and Crypto.com publish one global coin list, not a Canadian one. Check the coin in their Canadian app before you fund an account.
Asset lists differ by region and change over time, so confirm that GAS shows up in the app before you fund an account.
Buy GAS On Kraken
Kraken is also a CSA Restricted Dealer, and Interac e-Transfer deposits are free. Instant Buy costs 1%, while Kraken Pro starts at 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker, so anyone buying more than a token amount should switch to Pro. Read my Kraken review.
Buy GAS On Bitunix
Offshore Not registered with the Canadian Securities Administrators, and its terms of service restrict Canadian residents. No Canadian investor protection applies. I do not recommend it for Canadians.
Bitunix lists GAS, with spot fees of 0.08% maker and 0.10% taker at the base tier and no CAD funding. Its restricted regions notice names Canada as a prohibited jurisdiction.
Buy GAS On Crypto.com
Crypto.com serves Canadians through Foris DAX CAN ULC, a CSA Restricted Dealer. Its Canadian marketing says maker and taker fees run as low as 0.08% and 0.18%, but I could not retrieve its Canadian fee schedule, so treat that as a best case and read the order preview. Deposits by bank transfer, card or crypto are listed as zero-fee. Read my Crypto.com review.
How Do You Buy GAS In Canada Step By Step?
- Sign up to Kraken. I use Kraken here because it is the first CSA-registered platform in the table above that lists GAS. Download the app or use the website.
- Verify your identity. Upload a government-issued ID and a selfie, and sometimes proof of address. Verification can take up to 24 hours, so do it before you plan to buy.
- Deposit Canadian dollars. Interac e-Transfer deposits are free on Kraken, and a wire or debit card also works. Cards cost more.
- Find GAS. Search for the name and the ticker and check that both match. Some tickers are shared by unrelated coins, so confirm you picked GAS.
- Place the order. Use a market order for speed or a limit order if you want to name your price. Use Kraken Pro rather than Instant Buy if you can, because 0.40% to 0.80% beats 1%.
- Move long-term holdings to your own wallet. Check that the wallet supports GAS and its network, and send a small test transfer first. My best crypto wallets for Canadians list covers the options.
Which Wallets Support GAS, And How Do You Move It There?
Ledger lists a Neo N3 app in Ledger Live that works with Neon Wallet for custody of NEO and the GAS rewards. Neo N3 addresses begin with the letter N, derived from the 20-byte script hash with the version byte 0x35 and Base58Check encoding, so an address that does not start with N is not a Neo N3 address.
I found no memo or tag requirement documented for GAS. The general rule still applies: pick the Neo N3 network on the withdrawal screen, paste the address from your wallet, and send a small test first. Remember that only Kraken, Bitunix and Crypto.com on my list carry GAS, so your buy will probably start on Kraken.
How Risky Is GAS?
Any coin outside the top few can fall hard and trade thinly, and GAS is no exception. Thin trading means a wider gap between the buy and sell price, and that gap is a real cost on a small order. Buy only what you can lose, and decide in advance whether this is a trade or a long-term hold. I do not make price predictions, and nobody else can either.
How Do You Store GAS?
Keeping your GAS safe is something you must do if you do not want to risk it being stolen. For safekeeping, use a private crypto wallet. Choose one of the crypto wallets I reviewed, and then send your GAS from the exchange you used to buy it to your wallet. If you buy any valuable cryptocurrency, always move it to a private wallet to keep it secure. Check that the wallet supports the coin and its network first, because sending to an unsupported address can lose the funds for good. Write your recovery phrase on paper, never store it in a photo or a cloud note, and never share it with anyone, including anyone claiming to be support.
How Do You Sell GAS In Canada?
To sell, go to the exchange where you bought it. If your coins are in a wallet, send them back to the exchange first, then click sell. You can swap GAS for another cryptocurrency, or sell it for Canadian dollars if the exchange offers that, and then withdraw to your bank account. Withdrawal fees and limits differ by platform. My guide on how to sell or cash out crypto in Canada has the full steps.
Do You Pay Tax When You Buy GAS In Canada?
Buying GAS with Canadian dollars is not itself a taxable event. Selling it, swapping it for another coin or spending it can be. The CRA says that, depending on your activities, you may realize business income (or loss) or a capital gain (or loss), and the two are reported differently. Record the date and CAD value of every buy, sale and swap. See my crypto taxation guide and how to report your crypto taxes.
What Changed For Buying GAS In Canada In October 2026?
- Kraken republished its fee schedule, with Pro spot starting at 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker.
- Bitunix Innovation Limited's FINTRAC registration expired.
- The CSA issued a Restricted Dealer decision for Foris DAX CAN ULC, the entity behind Crypto.com in Canada.
