Part of my guide to how to buy crypto in Canada.
What Is Fantom (FTM)?
Fantom (FTM) isn’t just another cryptocurrency, it’s a high-speed blockchain built for DeFi, powering fast, cheap transactions and smart contracts. Canadians might be drawn to its zippy performance and staking rewards, whether you’re in Vancouver or the Prairies. But a quick heads-up: crypto investments are risky, so always weigh the ups and downs before jumping in!
I am not quoting a live FTM price here, since it would be out of date within hours. Check the order screen of your platform for the current CAD price, and compare it with the final quote that includes the platform's fee or spread.
Where Can You Buy Fantom (FTM) In Canada?
These are the platforms on my scorecard whose asset lists include FTM, in my fixed order. I checked each against the exchange's own listing data in October 2026. Platforms that do not appear here did not show FTM on their asset list, and I only recommend exchanges that do.

Which Registered Exchanges Carry Fantom (FTM)?
NDAX For Fantom (FTM)
7.8/10CSA-registered NDAX is a CIRO investment dealer and ranks seventh at 7.8. Interac e-Transfer and wire deposits are free. The flat fee is 0.20%, which is $1.00 on a $500 buy, plus a spread that NDAX does not publish. An Interac withdrawal costs CAD 1.50, which makes cashing out cheap.
How Do You Buy Fantom (FTM) In Canada Step By Step?
These steps use NDAX, the first CSA-registered exchange in the table.
- Sign up at NDAX. Use the link in the table, then upload a government-issued ID and a selfie, and sometimes proof of address. Verification can take up to 24 hours.
- Deposit Canadian dollars. On NDAX, Interac e-Transfer and wire deposits are free. A bank deposit usually avoids the extra cost of a card.
- Search for FTM. Open the trade or buy screen and look for FTM. Check the ticker carefully, because tokens with similar names exist.
- Place the order. Use a market order for speed or a limit order if you want to name your price. Read the fee preview before you confirm.
- Move long-term holdings to your own wallet. Try a small test transfer first. My best crypto wallets for Canadians list covers the options.
Cards are the quickest way to fund, but they usually cost more than a bank deposit, and Canadian banks sometimes block them.
What Is Fantom (FTM) Used For?
Fantom has been upgraded to Sonic. According to the official Sonic Labs and Fantom Foundation documentation, the official upgrade portal converts FTM to S, the Sonic token, on a 1:1 basis, and Sonic launched on December 18, 2024. If you hold FTM, the project's own materials treat it as a token you can upgrade to S rather than a coin that is going away without a path.
Sonic describes itself as an EVM-compatible chain with sub-second finality. S is the currency symbol of the Sonic network, and Sonic supports staking S with validators, with a guide on rewards, validators and claiming.
How Does Fantom (FTM) Work?
The migration had two phases. From December 18, 2024 to March 31, 2025, conversion between FTM and S worked in both directions. After that, the final phase is indefinite and one-way: FTM can be converted to S, with no reverse conversion. For holders on Fantom Opera, the upgrade is done on the MySonic portal by connecting a wallet, entering the amount, clicking upgrade and approving the transaction.
For FTM held on a centralised exchange, the project says Sonic is working with major exchanges so users can upgrade directly on those platforms, and that updates would come from the exchange that holds the FTM. So the first thing to check, if you are buying FTM in Canada, is whether the exchange still treats it as FTM or has already converted it.
What Are The Risks Of Holding Fantom (FTM)?
- Token status: the one-way phase means the token you hold may be FTM today and S tomorrow, and an exchange decides when and how it handles that.
- Fake portals: migrations attract scams. Use only the official portal linked from the Sonic Labs or Fantom Foundation documentation.
- Single Canadian listing: the only listing I could verify in Canada is on NDAX, so liquidity depends on one platform.
- Market risk: there is no promise of returns.
How Does Staking S Work On Sonic?
Staking on Sonic means delegating your S to a validator to help run the network and earn rewards based on your stake and the validator's performance. Sonic's guide says validators target about 3.5% APR at a 50% network staking rate, plus 15% of delegators' rewards and network fees, though targets are not guarantees. Rewards are paid to your wallet as liquid S and your staked principal is unaffected. When you unstake, the S enters a 14-day unbonding period during which it earns nothing and cannot be transferred or spent. Some ecosystem protocols offer liquid staking tokens that avoid that wait, but those add their own contract risk.

Which Wallets Support Fantom (FTM)?
The Sonic documentation says Sonic supports MetaMask and Rabby, and that MetaMask, Rabby, Ledger and Trezor all work with its native bundled transactions feature. It recommends Rabby for an improved experience. To add the network, the docs give these settings: network name Sonic, RPC URL https://rpc.soniclabs.com, chain ID 146, currency symbol S, explorer https://sonicscan.org.
How Do You Move Fantom (FTM) From An Exchange To A Wallet?
- Check your exchange's notice about FTM and S, and confirm which asset and network it will withdraw.
- Install a supported wallet such as MetaMask or Rabby and write down the recovery phrase offline.
- If you are receiving S on Sonic, add the Sonic network using the settings above. If you are receiving FTM on Fantom Opera, add that network instead.
- Withdraw a small test amount first.
- If you receive FTM and want S, use the MySonic upgrade portal from the official documentation.
What Should You Check Before Buying Fantom (FTM)?
- The ticker and network. Many tokens share names or tickers with copies, and the same coin can exist on more than one network. Confirm both before you pay.
- The listing itself. Open the asset page on the exchange and confirm that FTM is tradable against Canadian dollars, or that you will need to buy another coin first and swap.
- The all-in price. Compare the quote on the order screen with the exchange's fee schedule. A spread is part of the cost, even when the fee line says zero.
- Withdrawal rules. Some platforms set minimums, fees or hold periods on withdrawals to your own wallet, so read them before you deposit a large amount.
- Your records. Save the date, amount and CAD value of every purchase. You will need them at tax time.
How Do You Store Fantom (FTM)?
For short-term trading, leaving FTM on a registered exchange is fine. For long-term holding, move it to a secure crypto wallet. Exchanges can get hacked, and I have seen it go south. A hardware wallet like Ledger, or a software wallet that supports FTM, keeps it safer. Check the wallet's asset list and network before you send anything, and stash that seed phrase somewhere secure (not your phone!).
How Do You Sell Fantom (FTM) In Canada?
To sell, go to the exchange where you hold it. If your coins are in a wallet, send them back to the exchange first, then place a sell order. You can swap FTM for another cryptocurrency or sell it for Canadian dollars if the platform offers that, then withdraw to your bank account. Withdrawal fees differ by platform (NDAX charges CAD 1.50). My guide on how to sell or cash out crypto in Canada has the full steps.
Is Fantom (FTM) A Good Investment For Canadians?
FTM’s fast DeFi has potential, but crypto’s volatile, only risk what you’re okay losing. Nobody can tell you where the price goes next, and I do not make predictions. If you buy, size the position so a drop does not hurt, and remember that smaller tokens can be thin to trade, which widens the spread when you sell.
Do You Pay Tax When You Buy Fantom (FTM) In Canada?
Buying FTM with Canadian dollars is not itself a taxable event. Selling it, swapping it for another coin or spending it can be. The CRA says that, depending on your activities, you may realize business income (or loss) or a capital gain (or loss), and the two are reported differently. Record the date and CAD value of every buy, sale and swap. See my crypto taxation guide and how to report your crypto taxes.
What Changed For Buying Fantom (FTM) In Canada In October 2026?
- Kraken republished its fee schedule, with Pro spot starting at 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker.
- Robinhood closed its WonderFi acquisition, and Coinsquare customers are being moved in phases to the Robinhood app.
- NDAX received its CSA decision and CIRO investment dealer membership.
