Canadians can use the Lightning Network today through Bitcoin Well, which lets you buy bitcoin by Interac e-Transfer straight to a Lightning wallet, sell by Lightning for an e-Transfer, and swap between Lightning and on-chain for a 0.5% fee. Kraken and Coinbase also let you send over Lightning, at 0.1% and 0.2% respectively. I could not confirm that Strike serves Canadians from its own pages, so I do not list it as an option here.
- Buy to Lightning: Bitcoin Well, minimum $10 per its help page
- Cheapest send I can verify from an exchange: Kraken, 0 plus 0.1%
- Swap on-chain to Lightning: Bitcoin Well, Canada-only feature, 0.5% fee
Lightning is a second layer on top of Bitcoin built for fast, small payments. Instead of waiting for on-chain confirmations, you send over payment channels and the transfer settles in seconds. That is useful for tipping, small purchases and moving funds cheaply between a wallet and an exchange. It also brings its own wrinkles: liquidity, wallet choice and who holds the keys. This page covers what a Canadian can actually do, and I only list services whose terms I could read.
What Is The Lightning Network And Why Use It In Canada?
Lightning lets two parties open a payment channel and then exchange many small payments without recording each on the Bitcoin blockchain. The practical effect for you: a payment arrives in seconds, and fees can be a fraction of an on-chain send. For Canadians, the draw is that you can fund a Lightning wallet from a bank account by e-Transfer and spend or send small amounts without paying on-chain fees each time. The tradeoff is that Lightning is built for smaller amounts and you need a wallet that can receive it.
Which Canadian Services Support Lightning?
| Service | What You Can Do | Verified Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin Well (rank 7) | Buy by e-Transfer to Lightning; sell by Lightning for e-Transfer; swap on-chain and Lightning; pay bills | Buy 1.5% spread, sell 2.0% spread for verified accounts; swaps 0.5%; minimum buy $10 | Bitcoin only; FINTRAC MSB, not on the CSA list |
| Kraken (rank 3) | Withdraw bitcoin over Lightning | 0 plus 0.1% | CSA Restricted Dealer |
| Coinbase (rank 1) | Send bitcoin over Lightning | 0.2% processing fee | CSA Restricted Dealer |
| Bull Bitcoin (rank 5) | Bitcoin on-chain, Lightning and Liquid | Displayed spread about 2% per side | Boltz swap service suspended around August 2026 per Bull Bitcoin, which says funds are safe |
| Strike | Not verified for Canada | Not verified | Its site says it serves 100+ countries but I could not open the country list |
Order matters here. Coinbase is number 1 in my ranking overall, but Bitcoin Well is the one that is built around Lightning for Canadians, so it leads this page.
How Do You Buy Bitcoin On Lightning In Canada?
Bitcoin Well's help page describes the flow. You add a Lightning wallet in your account, choose Interac e-Transfer, select Lightning as the network and send an e-Transfer with the exact details shown in your account. Bitcoin Well converts the dollars into bitcoin and sends it directly to the Lightning wallet you control. The current minimum purchase is $10 (Bitcoin Well help, updated July 14, 2026). Its 2024 announcement said you could receive bitcoin in your Lightning wallet in under 10 seconds (Bitcoin Well blog). Delivery time still depends on when the e-Transfer lands, Lightning conditions and any bank review.
- Pick a Lightning wallet you control. Bitcoin Well suggests coinos.io for a quick start if you do not have one, and publishes a setup guide for Wallet of Satoshi. I did not verify the custody model of either, so check who holds the keys before you fund a wallet.
- Open a Bitcoin Well account. Use my Bitcoin Well link. Identity verification is required for verified accounts and gives the lower 1.5% buy spread.
- Add the wallet and choose Lightning. Under Buy bitcoin, select Interac e-Transfer, then Lightning under Network, then your wallet as the destination.
- Send the e-Transfer exactly as shown. Never copy another customer's details and do not share your security answer.
- Check Activity. The purchase appears there; confirm the bitcoin arrived in your wallet before you send more.
How Do You Sell Or Cash Out From Lightning In Canada?
Bitcoin Well's blog describes a payment address that converts incoming Lightning bitcoin into dollars and sends you an e-Transfer, in the format yourwelltag@sell.btcw.app (Bitcoin Well blog). It also lets you pay Canadian bills with bitcoin, on-chain or over Lightning. For the full process on any platform, see my guide to selling Bitcoin in Canada.
What Does It Cost To Move Between On-Chain And Lightning?
Bitcoin Well says its Canada-only swap feature lets you move bitcoin between the blockchain and Lightning without sending it to an exchange first, and that it charges a 0.5% fee. It also says to review the live quote because fees and limits can change (Bitcoin Well swap help). On a $500 move, 0.5% is $2.50. Kraken's Lightning withdrawal is 0 plus 0.1%, which is $0.50 on $500, but that needs the bitcoin to be on Kraken already, so the buy fee comes first.
| Route | Steps | Cost On $500 |
|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin Well, e-Transfer to Lightning | Buy straight to your Lightning wallet | $7.50 spread (1.5%) |
| Kraken Pro maker buy, then Lightning withdrawal | Buy on Kraken, withdraw over Lightning | $2.00 maker fee plus $0.50 withdrawal, plus any spread |
| Kraken Instant buy, then Lightning withdrawal | Buy on Kraken, withdraw over Lightning | $5.00 plus $0.50, plus a spread |
| Coinbase simple buy, then Lightning send | Buy on Coinbase, send over Lightning | Up to $9.38 fee plus 0.2% ($1.00), plus a spread |
The table is my arithmetic from published fees and leaves out spreads that are not published. It shows that the cheapest route on paper is the one with two steps, and that the simplest route is not far behind. If you are buying for small payments, the $10 minimum at Bitcoin Well is fine. If you already hold bitcoin on a registered exchange, Kraken's Lightning withdrawal is the cheapest verified move.
Are Lightning Wallets Safe?
Three points. Custodial wallets hold your keys for you, like an exchange, so the same counterparty risk applies; self-custody wallets give you the keys and the responsibility. Lightning balances are for spending: keep savings on-chain in a hardware wallet. And Lightning services can pause: Bull Bitcoin says Boltz suspended its swap services around August 2026, which affected Bull Wallet's Lightning and Liquid swaps, with funds said to be safe. My wallet ranking covers cold storage for the bigger amounts.
How Does Lightning Affect Your Taxes In Canada?
Moving your own coins between your own wallets is not a disposition, according to the CRA. Selling over Lightning for an e-Transfer, paying a bill with bitcoin, or any swap that gives up one asset for another is a disposition at fair market value. A fee paid in bitcoin is itself a small disposition under the same logic. Keep each transaction's date, units and CAD value, and use the ACB guide for the arithmetic.
What Can Go Wrong With A Lightning Purchase?
Bitcoin Well's help page flags the points where buyers trip. Delivery time depends on when your e-Transfer is received, Lightning Network conditions, whether the destination is available, and any review your bank performs, so a purchase is not guaranteed to land in ten seconds. Use only the Interac details shown inside your own account and never copy another customer's details or share your security answer, payment message or Lightning destination. And because Bitcoin Well lets you save the recipient so that future e-Transfers convert automatically and go to the wallet currently saved for that method, confirm your Lightning destination before you reuse it. If you change wallets and forget, the next e-Transfer goes to the old one.
Start with $10 or a small amount, confirm it arrives, then send more. That is the same habit I recommend for any first on-chain send, and it costs you only a few cents of spread.
What Changed For Lightning In Canada In October 2026?
- Bitcoin Well updated its help article for buying bitcoin by e-Transfer on Lightning, which states a $10 minimum purchase.
- Bull Bitcoin says Boltz suspended its swap services, affecting Bull Wallet Lightning and Liquid swaps; the exact date is not stated on its site.
- Kraken last updated its withdrawal fee page, listing Lightning withdrawals at 0 plus 0.1%.
