The Ledger Nano X is the cheaper Bluetooth device with closed firmware and a very wide coin list. The BitBox02 is the Swiss, open-source, audited alternative with a Bitcoin-only edition and a short coin list.
Ledger Nano X Vs BitBox02: Which Is Better For Canadians?
For most Canadians, the BitBox02 is the better pick. My #1 wallet pick overall is the Trezor Safe 7 (9.6/10).
What Happens If You Lose Your Ledger Nano X Or BitBox02?
Ledger Nano X: Your coins are recorded on the blockchain, not stored inside the device. Recovery depends on the backup: recovery sheets; optional Ledger Recover. Keep that backup offline and never type it into a website or app. 7 security issues are on record for the maker, the latest on 2026-08-27 (Security Bulletins 023, 024, 025: signing-review bypasses).
BitBox02: Your coins are recorded on the blockchain, not stored inside the device. Recovery depends on the backup: Instant backup and restore with included microSD card; optionally display the 24 recovery words (BIP-39) for manual backup. Keep that backup offline and never type it into a website or app. 2 security issues are on record for the maker, the latest on 2026-09-10 (Brevo newsletter account abused).

Which Is More Secure, Ledger Nano X Or BitBox02?
The Nano X is a Bluetooth device from a French company with a closed OS, and the BitBox02 is a Swiss device with fully open firmware that has been independently audited. That already sets the security trade-off: you trust Ledger's closed code on the Nano X, and you can inspect BitBox's.
Chips: the Nano X uses a Common Criteria EAL5+ secure element, below the EAL6+ of Ledger's newer devices. The BitBox02 original has an ATECC608B secure chip and an ATSAMD51J20A microcontroller, and the Nova has an EAL6+ certified dual-chip design. For backups, the Nano X uses recovery sheets and optional Ledger Recover, while BitBox backs up instantly to an included microSD card and can show the 24 recovery words.
Records. Ledger fixed Security Bulletin 021, a bootloader flaw that could brick a device, in Nano X 2.4.2 in January 2025, and in August 2026 shipped hardening after bulletins 023 to 025 about signing-review bypasses on compromised hosts (bulletin 023). It also had the 2020 customer data leak and the December 2023 Connect Kit attack.
BitBox's own record has two 2026 items. On August 17, 2026 its Dixence update disclosed two severe firmware flaws found in internal audits (memory corruption on Multi-edition devices before wallet setup, and a silent-payments flaw that could lock funds to an unintended address), plus a worse impact for a bootloader flaw first fixed in July. They need a malicious host or app, nobody reported theft, the Bitcoin-only edition does not contain the memory flaw, and firmware 9.26.5 fixes them (BitBox post). On September 10, 2026 attackers abused BitBox's Brevo newsletter account to send two phishing campaigns and download the subscriber list; shop orders, apps and devices were not touched (BitBox notice).
Which Is Easier To Use?
The Nano X has a 1.1 inch OLED at 128 x 64 and two buttons, with Bluetooth to the Ledger Wallet app on iPhone and Android, and weighs 34 g with up to 5 hours of battery. Ledger describes it as a small screen with a multi-step process. The BitBox02 has a 128 x 64 OLED, but with capacitive touch sliders and no buttons, no stated battery, and the BitBoxApp on Windows, macOS, Linux and Android. On iPhone, the Nova adds optional encrypted Bluetooth, while the original has no iPhone route. Both screens are small, so read addresses carefully.
Which Supports More Coins?
The Nano X supports 500+ coins directly in Ledger Wallet, naming XRP among others on Ledger's current-device pages, and thousands more through 50+ compatible wallets. The BitBox02 Multi edition covers Bitcoin, Litecoin, Cardano, Ethereum, Chainlink, BAT and 1,500+ ERC20 tokens, and the Bitcoin-only edition is Bitcoin only. XRP is not on the BitBox list I could source, so if you hold XRP, Solana or other chains, Ledger has the wider shelf.

The Nano X is USD 99 against USD 168 for the original BitBox02 or USD 197 for the Nova, which makes Ledger the cheaper entry. Ledger also has the Canadian storefront and three big Canadian retailers. BitBox's shop shows USD, CHF, EUR, GBP and BTC, so Canadian buyers should plan for conversion and carrier fees, and I could not confirm BitBox's Canadian shipping terms.
How Do They Work With Canadian Exchanges?
Both receive from any exchange. If you buy Bitcoin only, Bull Bitcoin's on-chain payout has no fee (minimum 0.001 BTC), and Bitcoin Well delivers straight to your wallet with no withdrawal fees. If you hold XRP, remember the exchange rules differ: Kraken shows a Travel Rule pop-up above CA$1,000. Transfers between your own wallets are not dispositions per the CRA. Read my Kraken review.
Which Should You Choose?
Choose the Nano X if you hold many coins, want a low price, and need Bluetooth to an iPhone.
: Ledger fixed Security Bulletin 021 in Nano X 2.4.2.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which Ledger Device Is Best?
I rank the Ledger Flex third overall. Among the Nanos, the Nano X adds Bluetooth for iPhone use and the Nano S Plus is cheaper but has no iOS support. See my Ledger Flex review.
How Long Will Ledger Nano X Be Supported?
Ledger has not given an end-of-support date on the pages I read. It still sells the Nano X in its Nano Classic range, and its newer Nano Gen5 now sits above it.
Is My XRP Safe On Ledger Nano X?
Ledger names XRP among the 500+ coins its Ledger Wallet app supports, and no Nano seed was drained through a device in the incidents I tracked. Protect the recovery phrase, check addresses on the screen and update firmware. I keep my XRP on a Trezor Safe 7 and a Tangem card.
What Is The Most Trusted Cold Wallet?
No brand is spotless. I rank the Trezor Safe 7 first, Tangem second and Ledger Flex third. BitBox is a strong Bitcoin-focused choice but outside my top seven.
