The Coldcard Q is a Bitcoin-only signing device built for people who like microSD cards and QR codes. The Trezor Safe 7 is a touchscreen wallet for thousands of coins. After the July 2026 Coldcard seed-generation theft, the honest one-line difference is that I would buy the Trezor and I would not buy the Coldcard.
Coldcard Vs Trezor: Which Is Better For Canadians?
For most Canadians, the Trezor Safe 7 is the better pick because it is in my top 7. I cannot recommend Coldcard after its security issues. My #1 pick is the Trezor Safe 7.
What Happens If You Lose Your Coldcard Q Or Trezor Safe 7?
Coldcard Q: Your coins are recorded on the blockchain, not stored inside the device. Recovery depends on the backup: microSD or paper BIP-39; Seed XOR bundle sold; passphrase backup planning guide on site. Keep that backup offline and never type it into a website or app. 16 security issues are on record for the maker, the latest on 2026-08-20 (Follow-up security fixes in 5.6.1 and 1.5.1Q). I no longer recommend this wallet: create a new seed on a different device and move your coins.
Trezor Safe 7: Your coins are recorded on the blockchain, not stored inside the device. Recovery depends on the backup: 12-, 20- and 24-word backup; Advanced multi-share backup (Shamir). Keep that backup offline and never type it into a website or app. 6 security issues are on record for the maker, the latest on 2026-09-09 (Brevo newsletter provider breach, phishing from Trezor's address).

CBSA courier thresholds: shipments from outside the US and Mexico are duty and tax free only up to CAD 20, and from the US or Mexico up to CAD 40, so expect taxes on any hardware wallet. Buy from the maker or an authorised reseller only.
I can no longer recommend Coldcard. On July 30, 2026 Coinkite disclosed that a build error dating back to 2021 made Coldcard devices create seeds from a weak software random number generator instead of the hardware one. Attackers rebuilt those keys offline and drained wallets. Updating the firmware does not repair a seed that already exists. Sources: Coinkite advisory, CoinDesk.
Which Is More Secure, Coldcard Or Trezor?
On paper the Coldcard Q is an impressive piece of hardware. Coinkite lists two secure elements from different vendors, a Microchip ATECC608 and a Maxim DS28C36B, next to the main processor, and the Q can block USB and NFC data permanently so it works only over QR and microSD. That is a serious air-gap story for a Bitcoin vault.
The trouble is what happened underneath. Coinkite says the devices were not hacked and that the weak seeds were the problem. Seeds made on Mk4, Mk5 or Q firmware before 5.6.0 / 1.5.0Q (Mk2 and Mk3: firmware 4.0.1 to 4.1.9) are at risk unless 50 or more private dice rolls or a strong passphrase went into them. Galaxy Research later counted more than 1,596 BTC taken from about 7,300 addresses, and CoinDesk reported a Toronto victim among them. Fixed firmware shipped on July 30 and 31, but anyone with an affected seed has to generate a new one on a different device and move the coins. Estimates of the total vary by outlet and date. A device can have the best chips in the business and still fail if the seed it creates is predictable. That is why I put seed generation first when I compare any two wallets.
The Trezor Safe 7 has its own record, and it is fair to list it. It pairs the open-source TROPIC01 element with an Optiga EAL6+ element and an STM32U5 chip, so three chips from three vendors guard the device. In June 2026 Ledger Donjon used laser fault injection to pull a subset of secrets out of the TROPIC01 chip. It needs the device in hand, a decapped chip and lab gear, and Trezor says the PIN, funds and backup are not exposed because that chip is one layer of three. Details are in Trezor's response. Trezor reports no impact to funds from it.
Which Is Easier To Use?
The Coldcard Q has a 3.2 inch screen and a full QWERTY keyboard, which is genuinely nice for long passphrases. It has no vendor app. You pair it with a Bitcoin wallet such as Sparrow through QR codes, NFC, microSD or USB using PSBT files. If you already run your own wallet software, that is fine. If you do not, it is a steep start.
The Trezor Safe 7 has a 2.5 inch colour touchscreen with haptic feedback, Bluetooth, USB-C and Qi2 wireless charging, and it works with Trezor Suite on Android, Mac, Windows and Linux, with full iOS compatibility on this model. Setup is a guided app flow. For a first hardware wallet it is the easier road by a wide margin.
Which Supports More Coins?
This is not close. The Coldcard Q is Bitcoin only: Bitcoin signing, PSBT and PushTX. The Trezor Safe 7 supports thousands of coins and tokens and more than 30 third-party wallet apps. I keep my ETH, SOL and XRP on a Trezor Safe 7 and a Tangem card, which is exactly the kind of mixed holding a Bitcoin-only device cannot cover.

Courier rules matter for either one. CBSA treats parcels from the US or Mexico differently from parcels from elsewhere, and the duty rate for a hardware wallet specifically is something the courier or CBSA has to tell you. Buy from the maker or an authorised reseller, as the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre advises, never from a marketplace seller.
How Do They Work With Canadian Exchanges?
Both are self-custody devices, so the flow is the same: withdraw from your exchange to an address the device shows you. Coinbase asks whether the wallet is self-custody and has a 'Sending to myself' checkbox. Kraken shows a Travel Rule pop-up on withdrawals of CAD 1,000 or more. Moving coins between wallets you own is not a disposition for the CRA. See my Coinbase and Kraken reviews, and the Canadian crypto tax guide.
Which Should You Choose?
Choose the Trezor Safe 7 if you want one wallet for Bitcoin plus other coins, an app that holds your hand and a company that publishes its firmware changelog on GitHub. It is my number one pick on the best crypto wallets in Canada list.
Do not choose the Coldcard Q as a new purchase. If you already own one, check which firmware made your seed. If it falls in the affected range and you did not add dice rolls or a strong passphrase, create a new seed on a different device now. My older Coldcard Q review stays online for existing owners. If you want a Bitcoin-only alternative, look at the Jade Plus comparison or the BitBox02 options.
What Has Happened With Coldcard And Trezor?
Trezor Safe 7 firmware 2.12.5 released, after 2.12.4 on August 19 (changelog).
An attacker used Trezor's email vendor Brevo to send a fake 'STM32 Entropy Vulnerability' alert. Trezor systems were not touched, but the message asked for wallet backups. It was a scam (Trezor).
Coldcard firmware 5.6.1 and 1.5.1Q now require user-added entropy when a seed is made: 65 key presses, 50 dice rolls or 128 coin flips (Coinkite).
Coinkite discloses the 2021 seed-generation bug and ships fixed firmware on July 30 and 31 (advisory).
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Coldcard Safer Than Trezor?
Not today. Coldcard's July 2026 seed-generation flaw let attackers recreate keys and drain wallets, and a firmware update does not fix an old seed. The Trezor Safe 7 has had disclosed lab attacks, including a June 2026 laser attack on one of its three chips, but no theft from it. I do not recommend Coldcard.
Is Coldcard The Best Bitcoin Wallet?
It used to be a favourite with Bitcoin-only users, but after July 2026 I cannot recommend it. For a Bitcoin-only device I would look at an open-source option with a clean seed-generation record instead.
There is no single answer, and trust should come from open-source code, a track record and your own backup. My current number one is the Trezor Safe 7, followed by Tangem and Ledger Flex.
Can I Buy A Trezor Safe 7 In Canada?
Yes. Trezor ships to over 200 countries and lists Amazon Canada as an authorised reseller. Duties are not stated, so check at checkout.
