BitBox is the Swiss, fully open-source option with a microSD backup and an optional Bitcoin-only edition. Ledger is the mass-market giant with a touchscreen, hundreds of coins and a closed-source operating system. For a Bitcoin-focused holder who values audited code, BitBox is the interesting one. For many altcoins, Ledger.

BitBox02: Your coins are recorded on the blockchain, not stored inside the device. Recovery depends on the backup: Instant backup and restore with included microSD card; optionally display the 24 recovery words (BIP-39) for manual backup. Keep that backup offline and never type it into a website or app. 2 security issues are on record for the maker, the latest on 2026-09-10 (Brevo newsletter account abused).

Which Is More Secure, BitBox Or Ledger?
BitBox02 firmware is fully open source and has been independently audited, which is the strongest point in its favour. The Nova uses an EAL6+ certified secure chip in a dual-chip design. The original BitBox02 uses an ATECC608B chip plus an ATSAMD51J20A microcontroller. Ledger Flex uses an EAL6+ ST33K1M5 element, but Ledger OS is not fully open source.
Is BitBox wallet safe? It is not spotless. On August 17, 2026, BitBox published its Dixence update: memory corruption on Multi-edition devices before wallet setup, a silent-payments flaw that could lock funds to an unintended address and a more severe impact for a bootloader flaw. These need a malicious host or app, nobody reported exploitation or stolen funds, and the Bitcoin-only edition does not contain the memory flaw. Firmware 9.26.5 fixes them (BitBox blog). A September 10 Brevo breach also let attackers send phishing from BitBox's newsletter account, affecting subscriber emails only. Ledger's list includes the 2023 Connect Kit attack and August 2026 signing-review bulletins. Both companies disclose openly, which is a good sign.
Which Is Easier To Use?
The BitBox02 has a 128 x 64 pixel OLED and capacitive touch sliders, with no buttons. It is minimalist and quick once you learn it. Backup is an included microSD card, instant to restore, with the 24 BIP-39 words available to display for a manual copy. The BitBoxApp runs on Windows, macOS, Linux and Android, and the Nova adds iPhone and iPad through optional Bluetooth. The Ledger Flex has a 2.8 inch E Ink touchscreen, Bluetooth, NFC and USB-C, and an app on every platform. The Flex is friendlier to beginners. BitBox suits people who prefer less.
Which Supports More Coins?
Ledger wins here. BitBox's Multi edition lists Bitcoin, Litecoin, Cardano, Ethereum, Chainlink, BAT and 1,500+ ERC20 tokens, and the Bitcoin-only edition does Bitcoin alone. I did not find XRP or Solana on the BitBox list. Ledger supports 500+ coins in its app, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana and XRP. Note that the two BitBox editions are separate products and cannot be converted later, so decide before you pay.

BitBox is cheaper in USD, but I could not see a CAD price or a Canadian shipping statement, so budget for exchange-rate conversion and courier duties. Ledger shows a CAD price upfront.
How Do They Work With Canadian Exchanges?
Both work the same way: a receive address, a small test, then the full amount. If you are buying Bitcoin to hold on a BitBox02 Bitcoin-only edition, Bull Bitcoin pays out straight to your own wallet by on-chain, Lightning or Liquid, and Bitcoin Well delivers to your wallet with no withdrawal fees. See my Bull Bitcoin review and Bitcoin Well review.
Backup deserves its own mention. BitBox ships a microSD card that restores the wallet in seconds, and the 24 recovery words can still be displayed for a paper copy. Keep that card somewhere separate from the device. Ledger gives you the 24-word phrase and a Recovery Key card. Either way, a test restore with a small balance is the cheapest insurance you will ever buy, and a metal plate beats paper if fire or water worries you.
If you hold Bitcoin only, the Bitcoin-only BitBox edition also shrinks the attack surface: BitBox said the memory flaw in August 2026 did not exist in that edition. That is a concrete reason to pick the narrow product if the narrow product covers you.
Keep one more point in mind about buying. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre advises buying hardware wallets directly from the manufacturer and getting crypto only from well-known exchanges. Ledger's authorised Canadian resellers are listed on its site, while for BitBox the official shop is the safe route. A device from an unknown marketplace seller could be tampered with before it reaches you.
Which Should You Choose?
Choose BitBox02 if you mainly hold Bitcoin, want open-source firmware and like a microSD backup. Pick the Bitcoin-only edition if that really is all you hold. Choose Ledger Flex if you need Solana, XRP or hundreds of other assets, want a big screen and want Canadian pricing in CAD. Check my Ledger Flex review, and BitBox Vs Trezor if open source is your main filter.
What Has Happened With BitBox And Ledger?
Attackers abused BitBox's Brevo newsletter account to send phishing and download its subscriber list (BitBox).
Ledger published Security Bulletins 023 to 025 (Donjon).
BitBox's Dixence update disclosed two severe firmware flaws and a funds-locking bug; fixed in firmware 9.26.5 (BitBox).
