No exchange on my list carries ICON (ICX) right now. I checked the asset lists of every platform I rank, and ICX is not on any of them.

That means I cannot send you to a Canadian-registered place to buy it. Start with my guide to buying cryptocurrency in Canada to see which platforms fit what you want, and check back, because listings change.

I have been trading crypto in Canada since 2016 and I have tested 61 exchanges to find the best ways for Canadians to buy coins like this one, and I share what I find on my YouTube channel, OCryptoCanada, and in the r/OCryptoCanada community. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned trader, this guide will help you make a smart, informed decision.

Why Buy ICON (ICX)?

ICON (ICX) isn’t just another cryptocurrency, it’s a blockchain connector, linking different networks for interoperability and dApp magic. Canadians might be drawn to its innovative tech, whether you’re in Vancouver or the Prairies. Read the next section before anything else, because the network is closing.

A quick heads-up: crypto investments are risky, so always weigh the ups and downs before jumping in. I am not quoting a live ICX price here, since it would be out of date within hours. Check the order screen of your platform for the current CAD price, and judge any coin by what it does rather than by a chart. The facts below come from the project's own site, docs or whitepaper, or from the wallet vendor's own support pages.

Is ICON (ICX) Shutting Down?

Yes, and this is the most important fact on this page. The ICON Network will shut down on December 31, 2026, and the project tells all ICX holders to migrate before that date. ICX holders migrate to the SODA token on the SODAX network through the SODA Exchange migration portal, with instructions at support.sodax.com. Migration becomes one-way, ICX to SODA only, from September 30, 2026, and December 31, 2026 is the final migration deadline. After shutdown the chain will be permanently halted, with a read-only archive kept for historical transaction lookups.

Two practical details from the ICON Foundation: users need a small balance of S (Sonic network) for future transactions after migrating, and ICX held on centralized exchanges converts automatically once the exchange adopts the migration. Check the live pages before acting, because the dates may change.

What Was ICON Built To Do?

ICON describes itself as an interoperability layer that helps teams and developers build cross-chain apps, and it has operated since 2017. It is a delegated proof-of-stake blockchain and smart contract platform whose validators are elected through ICX staking and delegation. Contracts are written in Java and run in the Goloop Java Virtual Machine, with a two-second block time with finality. Its Blockchain Transmission Protocol, or BTP, is a trustless, chain-agnostic interoperability solution for generic smart contract calls between connected chains.

ICX is used for staking and delegating to validators in on-chain governance, paying transaction fees, DeFi collateral and as peer-to-peer currency. ICON says all fees generated by applications using ICON technology are burned on-chain.

How Do ICON Validators And Staking Work?

Validators ranked 1 to 25 are Main Validators and 26 to 100 are Sub Validators, and only Main Validators vote on network proposals, which need a 67% threshold to pass. Validators pay a 2,000 ICX registration fee and keep a 5% bond to maximise rewards, and bonded ICX can be slashed for infrastructure failures or malicious behaviour. The docs describe a monthly allocation of 3,000,000 ICX split 77% to voters, 13% to validators and 10% to the Contribution Proposal System. Unstaking takes between 5 and 20 days, calculated dynamically from the total ICX staked. Given the shutdown, treat staking details as history rather than a plan.

What Should ICX Holders Do Before The Deadline?

If you already hold ICX, the project's instructions are the ones that matter. Use the SODA Exchange migration portal and follow the steps at support.sodax.com, keep in mind that migration becomes one-way from September 30, 2026, and do not leave it until the last week. Holders on a centralized exchange should read that exchange's own notice, because the ICON Foundation says exchange-held ICX converts automatically only once the exchange adopts the migration. If your exchange does not adopt it, withdrawing to a wallet you control before the deadline is the safer position, and the Ledger and Hana routes described below remain the documented ways to do that.

If you do not hold ICX, there is little reason to start now. A network with a published shutdown date is a poor fit for a new purchase, and no registered Canadian exchange I rank offers it anyway.

Where Can You Buy ICON (ICX) In Canada?

The table is empty because none of the ten exchanges I rank, plus Bitunix, Crypto.com and Shakepay, lists ICX.

What Can You Do Instead Of Buying ICON (ICX)?

If you want to hold crypto in Canada, there is a lot you can buy on registered platforms with free Interac funding. My guide to buying cryptocurrency in Canada compares them, and my exchange quiz picks one for your situation. If a registered platform adds ICX later, this page will be updated.

Which Wallets Support ICON (ICX), And How Do You Move It There?

Ledger Live supports sending and receiving ICX once the ICON app is installed on the Ledger device, though Hana is still recommended for staking and dApp use. Ledger's guide says mainnet ICX lives at addresses starting with hx, not ERC-20 style 0x addresses, and that it supports only mainnet ICX. Since no ranked exchange lists ICX, there is no buy-and-withdraw route for me to describe, and anyone already holding ICX should be looking at the SODAX migration instead.

How Risky Is ICON (ICX)?

Any coin outside the top few can fall hard and trade thinly, and ICX is no exception. Thin trading means a wider gap between the buy and sell price, and that gap is a real cost on a small order. Buy only what you can lose, and decide in advance whether this is a trade or a long-term hold. I do not make price predictions, and nobody else can either.

How Do You Store ICON (ICX)?

Keeping your ICX safe is something you must do if you do not want to risk it being stolen. For safekeeping, use a private crypto wallet. Choose one of the crypto wallets I reviewed, and then send your ICX from the exchange you used to buy it to your wallet. If you buy any valuable cryptocurrency, always move it to a private wallet to keep it secure. Check that the wallet supports the coin and its network first, because sending to an unsupported address can lose the funds for good. Write your recovery phrase on paper, never store it in a photo or a cloud note, and never share it with anyone, including anyone claiming to be support.

How Do You Sell ICON (ICX) In Canada?

To sell, go to the exchange where you bought it. If your coins are in a wallet, send them back to the exchange first, then click sell. You can swap ICX for another cryptocurrency, or sell it for Canadian dollars if the exchange offers that, and then withdraw to your bank account. Withdrawal fees and limits differ by platform. My guide on how to sell or cash out crypto in Canada has the full steps.

Do You Pay Tax When You Buy ICON (ICX) In Canada?

Buying ICX with Canadian dollars is not itself a taxable event. Selling it, swapping it for another coin or spending it can be. The CRA says that, depending on your activities, you may realize business income (or loss) or a capital gain (or loss), and the two are reported differently. Record the date and CAD value of every buy, sale and swap. See my crypto taxation guide and how to report your crypto taxes.

What Changed For Buying ICON (ICX) In Canada In October 2026?

  • Kraken republished its fee schedule, with Pro spot starting at 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker.
  • Coinbase launched regulated crypto derivatives for eligible Canadian investors through Coinbase Financial Markets. It is not a way to buy the coin itself.
  • Robinhood closed its WonderFi acquisition, and Coinsquare customers are being moved in phases to the Robinhood app, so I no longer point new buyers to Coinsquare or Bitbuy.
