No exchange on my list carries GateToken (GT) right now. I checked the asset lists of every platform I rank, and GT is not on any of them.

That means I cannot send you to a Canadian-registered place to buy it. Start with my guide to buying cryptocurrency in Canada to see which platforms fit what you want, and check back, because listings change.

I have been trading crypto in Canada since 2016 and I have tested 61 exchanges to find the best ways for Canadians to buy coins like this one, and I share what I find on my YouTube channel, OCryptoCanada, and in the r/OCryptoCanada community. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned trader, this guide will help you make a smart, informed decision.

Why Buy GateToken (GT)?

GateToken (GT) isn’t your everyday crypto, it’s the token tied to the Gate.io exchange, built around trading fee cuts and staking perks. Canadians might love its link to a global trading hub, but it carries a catch for us, which I get to below.

A quick heads-up: crypto investments are risky, so always weigh the ups and downs before jumping in. I am not quoting a live GT price here, since it would be out of date within hours. Check the order screen of your platform for the current CAD price, and judge any coin by what it does rather than by a chart. The facts below come from the project's own site, docs or whitepaper, or from the wallet vendor's own support pages.

What Is GateToken (GT), And What Is It For?

Gate describes GT as the core utility token of Gate and the native asset of GateChain. Gate lists uses that include Launchpad and Launchpool access, HODLer Airdrop rewards, staking and investment products, and payments within its ecosystem. In plain terms, it is an exchange token, and its value rests on how much people use that exchange.

GT launched with an initial supply of 300 million tokens, and the ERC-20 GT announcement states a maximum supply capped at 300 million. It is burned on-chain in two ways: gas fees on GateChain are burned, and Gate periodically transfers additional GT to a burn address. Gate publishes quarterly burn announcements, for example 2,244,543.97 GT burned for Q3 2024, and says its deflationary strategy will continue to be strictly enforced.

How Many Versions Of GT Exist?

GT exists in four formats: Ethereum-based GT, Gate Chain Mainnet GT, Gate Chain EVM-format GT and Gate Layer GT. Gate says it upgraded to an on-chain cross-chain mechanism for converting GT between those formats. Gate Layer is a Layer 2 network built on Optimism's OP Stack with GateChain as the settlement layer, and GT is its exclusive gas token while keeping the dual burn mechanism.

The ERC-20 GT contract address published by Gate is 0xE66747a101bFF2dBA3697199DCcE5b743b454759. If you ever hold GT, knowing which of the four formats you hold is the difference between a smooth withdrawal and a stuck one.

What Risks Come With An Exchange Token?

An exchange token concentrates risk in one company. Gate documents a GT Safety and Law Fund, which it said it would build to a 50 million GT scale to help users who experience theft or fraud, and says it holds 26 million GT in it. That is a useful disclosure, but it is Gate's own promise, not a Canadian investor protection scheme.

For Canadians the bigger point is access. Gate.io lists Canada as a restricted location in its user agreement, so the exchange that issues GT is closed to us, and none of the registered exchanges I rank carries the token. Gate's own withdrawal guide warns that the chain you choose must match the network of the receiving platform, that a wrong network or incorrect information can mean permanent loss, and that confirmed withdrawals cannot be cancelled. Those are good rules for any exchange.

Where Can You Buy GateToken (GT) In Canada?

The table is empty because none of the ten exchanges I rank, plus Bitunix, Crypto.com and Shakepay, lists GT.

Can You Buy GateToken (GT) Through Gate.io From Canada?

GT is tied to Gate.io, and that is the dead end. Gate.io is an offshore exchange that is not registered in Canada, and its user agreement lists Canada as a restricted location, so Canadians cannot use it under its own terms. I do not recommend working around that, because a breach of the terms can leave you unable to withdraw. Read my Gate.io review for the detail.

What Can You Do Instead Of Buying GateToken (GT)?

If you want to hold crypto in Canada, there is a lot you can buy on registered platforms with free Interac funding. My guide to buying cryptocurrency in Canada compares them, and my exchange quiz picks one for your situation. If a registered platform adds GT later, this page will be updated.

Which Wallets Support GateToken (GT), And How Do You Move It There?

Gate launched ERC-20 GT with deposits and withdrawals, letting users withdraw GT and store it in any wallet that supports ERC-20 tokens. Gate's withdrawal process needs a fund password and a Google verification code. I have not found a wallet vendor page that names GT specifically, so I cannot tell you which hardware wallets list it.

Since no registered exchange I rank carries GT, there is no buy-and-withdraw route for me to describe here.

How Risky Is GateToken (GT)?

Any coin outside the top few can fall hard and trade thinly, and GT is no exception. Thin trading means a wider gap between the buy and sell price, and that gap is a real cost on a small order. Buy only what you can lose, and decide in advance whether this is a trade or a long-term hold. I do not make price predictions, and nobody else can either.

How Do You Store GateToken (GT)?

Keeping your GT safe is something you must do if you do not want to risk it being stolen. For safekeeping, use a private crypto wallet. Choose one of the crypto wallets I reviewed, and then send your GT from the exchange you used to buy it to your wallet. If you buy any valuable cryptocurrency, always move it to a private wallet to keep it secure. Check that the wallet supports the coin and its network first, because sending to an unsupported address can lose the funds for good. Write your recovery phrase on paper, never store it in a photo or a cloud note, and never share it with anyone, including anyone claiming to be support.

How Do You Sell GateToken (GT) In Canada?

To sell, go to the exchange where you bought it. If your coins are in a wallet, send them back to the exchange first, then click sell. You can swap GT for another cryptocurrency, or sell it for Canadian dollars if the exchange offers that, and then withdraw to your bank account. Withdrawal fees and limits differ by platform. My guide on how to sell or cash out crypto in Canada has the full steps.

Do You Pay Tax When You Buy GateToken (GT) In Canada?

Buying GT with Canadian dollars is not itself a taxable event. Selling it, swapping it for another coin or spending it can be. The CRA says that, depending on your activities, you may realize business income (or loss) or a capital gain (or loss), and the two are reported differently. Record the date and CAD value of every buy, sale and swap. See my crypto taxation guide and how to report your crypto taxes.

What Changed For Buying GateToken (GT) In Canada In October 2026?

  • Kraken republished its fee schedule, with Pro spot starting at 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker.
  • Coinbase launched regulated crypto derivatives for eligible Canadian investors through Coinbase Financial Markets. It is not a way to buy the coin itself.
  • Robinhood closed its WonderFi acquisition, and Coinsquare customers are being moved in phases to the Robinhood app, so I no longer point new buyers to Coinsquare or Bitbuy.
