Before you buy an ASIC miner in Canada, check your province's power rules, because British Columbia, Manitoba and Quebec all restrict crypto mining. BC permanently prohibited new mining connections to BC Hydro in fall 2025, Manitoba has a moratorium on new operations, and Quebec requires ministerial authorization for 50 kW or more. Imported hardware can attract GST/HST and duties, and mining income is reportable to the CRA. I could not verify Bitmain's current Canadian shipping or reseller terms, so confirm them with the seller.

  • Check first: provincial power rules and your electricity contract
  • Buy from: the manufacturer or an authorized seller, never an anonymous marketplace listing
  • Budget for: import taxes, hosting or power, and income tax on what you mine
  • Cheaper learning option: read my mining guide before spending anything

Searches for “ASIC miner Canada” and “Bitmain Canada” are small but serious: these are people about to spend thousands of dollars. So this page skips the sales pitch. It covers the three things that decide whether a miner makes sense where you live, and flags what I could not verify.

Part of my guide to how to buy crypto in Canada.

Where Can You Buy An ASIC Miner In Canada?

There are three routes: direct from the manufacturer, through an authorized distributor or reseller, and used or marketplace listings. I could not load Bitmain's site for product, shipping or reseller details, so I will not tell you what Bitmain ships to Canada or at what price. Do that check yourself on the manufacturer's site. What I will say is that prices for ASICs move with the bitcoin price and the network difficulty, so anything I printed here would date, and listings with no warranty or seller history deserve suspicion.

What Does Importing A Miner Into Canada Cost?

Goods imported into Canada can attract GST/HST and sometimes customs duties, collected by the carrier or the Canada Border Services Agency. Whether the seller collects them up front depends on the seller. I have not verified a duty rate for ASIC miners, so ask the seller for the landed price in writing and confirm the tariff classification before you pay. A surprise bill at the door can be a large share of a small miner's cost.

Where Can You Mine In Canada Given Power Rules?

This is where Canada differs from most countries. Electricity is cheap in some provinces and restricted in the same provinces because the grid is limited. The BC, Manitoba and Quebec rules above are the clearest. Elsewhere the issue is your own electricity contract and your landlord or condo rules. A home miner also draws steady power and produces noise and heat, which is why hosting exists.

Should You Use Mining Hosting In Canada?

Hosting means you own the machine but a facility runs it. Operators generally charge per kilowatt-hour or per machine, and the contract can include minimum terms and uptime clauses. I did not verify any Canadian hosting provider's rates, so I do not name one. Before signing, ask about power cost per kWh, contract length, what happens when the bitcoin price falls, and where your machine physically sits. Moving a machine out of a facility is often harder than moving it in.

How Is Mining Taxed In Canada?

The CRA's crypto guidance covers mining and staking and says you must keep books and records. The CRA says mining income is business income, with expenses such as power, pool fees and maintenance among the records to keep. Selling the mined coins later can also trigger a gain or loss. See my crypto tax guide and ask an accountant how to treat the hardware itself.

Is Cloud Mining Or A Mining Pool A Better Idea?

A mining pool is not an alternative to hardware, it is where your hardware sends its work to get paid more steadily, so you still need a miner. Cloud mining is a different product: you pay a company for hash power. It has a long history of scams, so research any provider hard. I cover one such company in my ECOS review. For a plain overview of the whole space, read my guide to crypto mining in Canada.

  1. Check your province's mining rules and your electricity contract.
  2. Calculate power cost per month and compare it to expected income using a public mining calculator and the current network difficulty.
  3. Get a written landed price in CAD including taxes and shipping.
  4. Buy only from the manufacturer or an authorized seller and keep the invoice for tax.
  5. Plan where it runs: home, or hosted. Know the contract terms.
  6. Track income and expenses from the first day, for the CRA.

How Does The CRA Treat Mining Equipment And Income?

The CRA is specific here. Its guidance says the value of the crypto-assets you receive for mining must be included in your business income at the time it is earned, and that proof-of-work mining will be considered as carrying on a business because of the scale and resources involved. It also says that if you own mining equipment such as ASIC miners or GPU mining rigs used in a mining business, you may be able to claim capital cost allowance, and that it considers ASIC miners and GPU rigs can meet the conditions to fall within CCA class 50. A separate CRA notice says a person engaged in mining is generally considered not to be engaged in a commercial activity for GST/HST purposes, although they may still be carrying on a business for income tax purposes.

What The CRA Says About Mining, At A Glance
TopicCRA Position
Income timingValue of mined crypto-assets is business income when earned
Business or hobbyProof-of-work mining is considered a business given its scale and resources
EquipmentASIC miners and GPU rigs may qualify for capital cost allowance, class 50
GST/HSTA person mining is generally not engaged in commercial activity for GST/HST
RecordsKeep hardware purchase receipts and expenses for power, pool fees and maintenance
RetentionAt least six years from the end of the last tax year the records relate to

What Does A Mining Setup Cost To Run?

The costs beyond the machine are power, hosting if you use it, pool fees and maintenance, and the CRA lists the same items as records to keep. I have not verified any hosting provider's rate or pool fee, so I give no figures. Build your own sheet: machine landed cost in CAD, monthly power draw in kWh times your rate, pool fee, and expected income at current difficulty and price. If the machine does not pay for itself on conservative assumptions, it is a hobby that costs money, and the CRA's note that mining is generally considered a business will not make that feel better.

What Happened To Crypto Mining Power In British Columbia?

BC's government timeline is useful for anyone thinking about location. A temporary suspension of new crypto mining connections to BC Hydro began in December 2022, engagement sessions with First Nations and stakeholders followed in July 2023, the Utilities Commission Act was amended in spring 2024 to authorize a permanent framework, and a permanent ban took effect in fall 2025 through the Cryptocurrency Power Regulation. The province said the electricity is better used on projects that provide the greatest benefits to BC, including electrification. The policy page does not address operations connected before the 2022 suspension, so existing sites are a separate question.

What Changed For Crypto Miners In Canada In October 2026?

  • Manitoba's Bill 20 received assent, enabling a curtailable power program for existing crypto operations, with a separate levy under Bill 39.
  • Quebec adopted Bill 69, behind the ministerial authorization rule for 50 kW or more of crypto mining power.
  • British Columbia began a temporary suspension of new crypto mining connections to BC Hydro.
  • BC amended the Utilities Commission Act to authorize a permanent crypto mining power framework.
  • BC implemented a permanent ban on new crypto mining connections through the Cryptocurrency Power Regulation.
